This is my new love in singing. I'm 74 years old, in Connecticut, and in September, I will drive 50 miles to find sacred Harp singing. I have been in church choirs since 4th grade, and I need Thee every hour. God has blessed me with a voice to sing. May it be a praise to Him always.
Gives me chills every time I listen. I remember this music when I was five and six and seven years old with my stepdad‘s father in backwoods Choctaw county, Alabama. I could’ve sworn I heard God sing back then When that old Country church choir sang sacred Harp nearer my God to thee.
Dedicated today to all those Christians and Yazidis trapped on a mountain in Iraq and surrounded by the forces of darkness - hear these voices and know you are not alone!
She sings her heart out here and any time she sings! I love this woman. When I was just a little girl she saved my life. I now call her mom! I'm so proud of her voice but more proud of her heart and the many lives she continues to touch! I'm thankful for the countless nights she calmed my heart and sang me to sleep!
That's amazing. Tell her that her singing/voice/leading has touched my heart all these years later from Pennsylvania! I hope to get down to Alabama for a sing soon.
Coming as a classical singer, perhaps this is not the most "technically and conventionally beautiful" sound. Coming as a Christian, this is one of the most moving and beautiful examples of worship I've ever seen. Thank you for this truly uplifting piece of music. It has made my night.
@@peteeiseman-renyard162 you just described the fundamentals of Bel-Canto technique. The artificial "trained" sound comes from singers trying to use muscle rather than air when they ascend through their scale. Usually results in a warble developing as they age. Some sacred harp singers will also use muscle to lock their straight tones rather than trusting air. People like to overthink singing.
Coming from the Appalachian Mountains makes me have a deep love and respect of this singing. Think how the millions of voices will sound lifting their voices in praise in Heaven!
Every time I return to this I ball like a baby. The spirit moves on her so much and the way her voice rises above the entire chorus is not humanly possible. One of my goals in life is to witness this in person. Praise God.
At 1:35 - Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee! E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me, still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to thee; nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee! Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down, darkness be over me, my rest a stone; yet in my dreams I'd be nearer, my God, to thee; nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee! Or if, on joyful wing cleaving the sky, sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward I fly, still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to thee; nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
This lesson is all about singing the song--not rushing thru it to reach a song count. Yes, there is something to attempting to let everyone lead, but I think sometimes we lose sight of the idea that we're primarily there to sing. So I love the unhurried pace of this lesson. She gives this song its proper time and the group fully supports her in this effort.
Man I would love to do this someday. This must be in my protestant blood or something, cause whenever I hear sacred harp singing I just want to worship the Lord in a square room with no air conditioning with some brothers and sisters and just sweat and sing!
Just look up fasola dot org for a geographical list of singings and find your local. The general rule is just turn up and sing up, all are welcome regardless of experience.
I needed this today, I backslid and am depressed and disappointed in myself, the only way I can battle my demons is to draw near to God.and listen to him when I'm about to make a impulsive decision that always utterly wrecks me
This is the most beautiful rendition of this song I've ever heard. Thanks so much for sharing it with us. Sacred Harp is such a unique type of music and so different from what I grew up with in the Catholic Church. There's something really cool about so many imperfect voices coming together to form a gorgeous whole.
I realise this is a bit late, but do you realise that there is a very active shape-note singing community in the UK? Feel free to find your closest group on ukshapenote dot org dot uk and come along. You don't need any experience, just turn up and sing up.
I grew up in a southern baptist church. I always liked when they sung hymns. I would stand near my mom. I could smell the wood in the church. I miss those days.
Oh my word, yes! Thank you for the clarification. There is having church, and there is having CHURCH! In this recording they are having CHURCH. :0) They are so well balanced and then you hear her voice on some of the chords...like a divine note plucked from heaven.
Absolutely beautiful and sublime! Didn't just bring me to tears, but to a full sob! My wife and I just started with a Sacred Harp group, and love this music! THANK YOU!
+Mimi Wright. Thank you! My wife and I can already tell we will feel the same way! We are already making plans for travelling around the country for various "sings", in five years when I retire! So looking forward to that!
+Art Danks That will be very fine, I've been to singings in the South, New England and here in the West. Every where I've been people are very welcoming. We've had visitors from many places too.
Mimi Wright, where are you from? We are really looking forward to going to a singing in Cape Cod this coming weekend!! @Art Danks that's awesome!! We sing Sacred Hard in our regular church services in Alabama.. love it! Hope you can make it down to one of those signings!
Easily my favorite example of this kind of singing. The passion and commitment that this woman brings to the song is chilling. Awe-some, with the emphasis on "awe".
This brought me to tears as it made me think of My Great Great Grandparents Thomas and Hannah O'Brien as the TITANIC sank....it also made me think of my Mom...Oh Lord how I miss you...
This is singing in the spirit. How I would loved to have sung with them. Psalm 116:17 Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. and extol him with music and song.
This was absolutely chilling for lack of a better word. Such passion in this singing. I am involved in Gospel Singing Conventions which utilize shape note music. While it is not the same as Sacred Harp, there are many similarities and they both take an enormous amount of talent and passion to execute. You all did it PERFECTLY.
+Terrill White When you grow up hearing it, singing it and ultimately knowing this is the only way to sing or read music, the emotions come out crystal clear. I would not trade my heritage for all the tea in China! I'm glad you were blessed by hearing our good ol' shape note, Sacred Harp music!
Singing Sacred Harp does not require an enormous amount of talent. Many, probably most, Sacred Harp singers have little if any other musical training. The shape note system was designed to make it easier for people without musical training to sing. Anyone can join in.
My Lord, my Lord, my Lord...Thank you for posting this. Going through some rough times. This was much needed. It's a song I'll carry with me forever, now. I grew up with this song but Sacred Harp made it set itself deep within me in a way I'd never experienced before. God bless you and thanks for the comfort you brought me.
The voice soar and the music, like a beautiful yet unseen wave washes over one bringing memories of home and long departed loved ones. What wonderful, wonderful singing!
Stunning. Also - just love the way that the lady in the back row holds her phone up to the singers, around 3 minutes in. Whoever was on the other end of that line must have been absolutely blown away.
Beautiful rendition. The other examples I've heard of this type of singing are usually quite fast-paced with short notes. This is the first I've heard one this slow with long notes.
This one touched me deeply and made me look up from what I was doing and I was captivated. I am so wanting to get this going in my neighborhood. And I think it could do wonders at the Union Gospel Mission too.
This may be mentioned already, but the tune dates from 1856 and is "Bethany" by Lowell Mason (once the organist at Ind Pres Church of Savannah, GA where I attend) and the words of the hymn are by Sarah Flower Adams, written in 1841. Can't beat the 1800s for great enduring music!
rhinely850 They really make the shaped note version work! It's a bit ironic, since Mason considered this earlier American tradition primitive and pushed for more European style church music as exemplified by this very tune.
Had the joy of leading this with Darlene several times when she was living in Minnesota. Knocking on heaven’s door . . .
I was there that day. It raised the house.
I want to be there next time

Mt. Pisgah Church, Alabama, Darlene Dalton leading the tune with the spirit. Eyes watering hearing the voices of friends.

I rewatch this video every few months, thinking it won't make me gross sob for once, and every time I'm proven wrong.
I'll forget for a while, and then I remember and come back and cry all over again.
I hope this is the last song that ever leaves my lips before I leave this earth.

May I know who this lady is? Her pure devotion can be understood through her singing! I'm watching this video here in India and trust me, Im moved!
I will tell her! We are headed to a singing in Cape Cod thiscoming weekend! I know that's far from PA though! I'll try to take videos!
Thank you. My prayers with you all.
She isi filled and overflowing with the Spirit of God !!!!!!!
This is what heaven will be like
I play this over and over. It comforts me beyond anything I can describe.
One of the songs that led me to find my Saviour...

The one thing I hate is "trained" voices trying to sing Sacred Harp. They do it all wrong. You must just open your throat and sing.

What I love about sacred harp is that there’s no need for instruments the voices are both vocal and the instruments
This is one of those rare moments that captures what "filled with the spirit" means. A pure connection of people and God.
This was my grandmother's favorite hymn. She would sing this while she was washing dishes. Not going to lie, it made me cry.
That's what we singers call "getting all the good out of it." Absolutely magnificent!

The song leaders palpable joy made me cry.
Me too. It's what I love most about this video. :)
high on religion, literal endorphin /serotonin effect happening to this lady

So real and affecting. Spirit is here.

Thanks so much for transcribing the words to this powerful song.
Much appreciated.
May God Bless you
I think this is the most human sound. I feel blessed to have heard it.
Imagine if all the church in the United States gathered together on a mountain top or at the edge of the sea and sang this. 🥰🥰🥰 God bless you

This takes me to heaven …

Go and do it, Earl. Find a place where they will be singing, and go and do it.
Or, alternatively, and I hope I'm wrong, stop taking the piss.
It is my heritage. It brings tears to my eyes. So sweet and beautiful. Yes, it is in my blood.
Come to the Siloam Church in Pike County, Missouri on the second Saturday of the month and sing Sacred Harp with us!
Just look up fasola dot org for a geographical list of singings and find your local. The general rule is just turn up and sing up, all are welcome regardless of experience.
You can just feeeel the passion of the music they're making. I'd love to attend one of these JUST for the music.
God bless this church. I played this for my mother-in-law in her last days and it stirred her heart in ways that words cannot express.
This is truly beautiful.
Sing it sister. I cried listening to the power of these voices of God's choir. Be blessed my fellow Christians.

I learned of sacred harp from my world music class in college... ten years later I still find this video to be profound.
I'm not a particular fan of religion but this is beautiful wonderful soulful music. That there is no denying. It's incredibly evocative.
She has a beautiful countenance about her!
Absolutely beautiful worship! Praise God! I am excited to seek out a group near me where I can sing like this.
Thank God I am southern.
+Paul Scott Yeah, it's a shame we don't have anything like this up North. Real shame.

Sacred Harp originated in New England and is still sung there today.
