- This is a video that has been in the works for the past 12 months! Originally, I wanted to document the switchover from Thomas Wooden Railway to Thomas Wood merchandise at my local Toys R Us store, but then the Toys R Us closing madness ended up putting a stop to my plan. However, I still wanted to show off all of this footage I filmed, so this new, combined video is not only about the TWR to Wood transition, but there are also elements of the Toys R Us clearance sales as well. Hope you enjoy it!

The Oz TRU stores did stay open to see the full transition to Thomas Wood but the stock levels were shockingly bad. But thats across most of the Thomas toys where I live. I can only suspect that Mattle really wants consumers to purchase online. Just as their company statement outlined back in 2014 related to TWR. They can make more money dealing directly with customers and cut out the 'retailer'.

Great video. It's so sad that toys r us has closed across the world. I use to love going to my local toys r us to get my take along thomas' and other toys. It's so sad that a big part of so many people's childhood is now gone.
Toysrus is still open In Japan, Canada, some European, African, and other Asian countries.

Here’s my story: I was at day out with thomas and went to buy wooden railway toys, i was unaware of wood, so i had no idea it existed, then i went into the tent and saw that emily, james, and diesel 10 were unpainted, and cheaper. I didn’t buy them because of how cheap they were. Somehow, i found a leftover wooden railway spencer so i bought him.
This was really interesting to watch! The transformation over time is astounding to watch, and you did a great job of going in depth on the ramifications of all the details. Nothing hit quite as hard as seeing the bare, empty shelves side-by-side with their brimming, vibrant counterparts from the year before. I'm very glad you documented this story the way you did. Pour one out for a TRU friend to the end!

It's so disappointing that DreamWorks ruined VeggieTales by changing the designs, and Mattel ruined TWR by changing the designs, especially since Big Idea and Learning Curve did such a great job with VeggieTales and TWR before them! Don't fix what isn't broken! At least we had a lot of great years with the good ole classics! I will always keep my TWR engines and remember the glory days... :'(

I was so sad when Toys R Us closed down. I’ve been shopping there for my entire childhood, and seeing it close down just broke me. Now, every time I pass it, I just think of all the unfortunate children who as lucky as I was to have Toys R Us all through their childhood.

I don't think the two are related (Toys R Us had been in bad shape long before Thomas Wood came onto the shelves) but it certainly didn't help Mattel that the big store that sold their new Wood range closed before most of the new merchandise could get out to the public.

Dang $0.3 cents for the take n play go go speedy railway set and take n play skiff for $0.3 cents each that is a extremely good bargen considering how rare the go go speedy railway set is to day
Actually Toys R Us went bankrupt from a company only paying 1/6 of the price of Toys R Us witch all the debt ($5,000,000,000) went to Toys R Us even if online retailers weren't as big Toys R Us would not have lasted very long.

I believe Mattel would actually be able to keep their company alive if they worked like they did between 2012 and the production of the Small Railway Engines episodes such as Railway Series adaptations and not reinventing the TWR line. but I can totally relate to my local Toys R Us which went through pretty much the exact same things yours did.

In my opinion, seeing Toys R Us slowly die from March 2018 to the end of June 2018 was one of the saddest moments of my life. I had been visiting Toys R Us since I was a little toddler, and seeing it die was like watching a part of my childhood die (which it was). Luckily, Toys R Us is back in the form of store-within-store locations at a lot of different Macys across the country. Although it's nice to see the name still around, and still selling toys, it doesn't feel the same as, nor will it ever be, the big box stores we all knew and loved so fondly from our childhoods.
Plus, Thomas Wooden Railway has been back for over a year now, and it looks really good.

Even though Hit screwed up the show, the merchandise was great. The trackmaster was awesome, I still wish I got more when I had the chance. But my most favorite was Take n play, I had so many Take n play thomas characters in 2009, still have (Thomas, Edward & Diesel), I never actually bought much wooden railway merchandise except Gordon & Henry. After watching this video I dont think I buy any latest Thomas merchandise ever so I decided to buy the old thomas trackmaster products whilst there still is time because a store near me still sells old thomas products

This is how Thomas Wood could have worked. It would be a sub series of Wooden Railway, rather than be a replacement. The modles themselves would be the same as the originals. And they should have gone all in with the wood look. Only adding the essentials like numbers and line work.

There are hardly any actual stores that sell Thomas Wooden Railway now - Toys R Us was the big place. I'm guessing I'll have to do all of my purchases on the internet from now on.

Ah, late-2017 to early-2018. A simpler time when you could find both Wooden Railway and Wood in the same stores.
I was watching this. Mattel Found out how insane everybody was going with Thomas wood. so they got fisher-price to get some seriously good wooden railway toys (yes they brought it back) and this time, the engines have pilot wheel and driving wheels and they slowly are building higher and higher and the boxes can be used to showcase items, and honestly, I love it
I know I’m going to sound rather old by saying this but I feel it needs to be said, I remember the early 2000’s of Thomas when the show was still using the models, when take along was still growing, when Tomy was starting to fade, and ertl was still on the shelves. It was to me at least a great time, I would always pretend the trains were part of the show and make up my own episodes and stories, I feel that can only be achieved when the toys look just like the trains in the show or something like them. This is something the modern toys can’t achieve. I don’t really know how to end this I just wanted to rant a bit.
That video idea is not derailed. Target is still in business and you can go there for your video.

If Mattel is having financial troubles, perhaps someone could buy the Thomas line and change it for the better? In the words of Qui-Gon Jinn,"There's always a bigger fish."
Maybe no company wants to buy Thomas right now. The Thomas line isn't as popular as it used to be so I bet some companies don't see it as a wise investment. Plus, Mattel is now involved in all levels of the Thomas show and merchandise. They practically run the TV show nowadays, so unless something major happens, I don't think they are going to sell Thomas off without a fight. It's still a big moneymaker for them even though they keep shooting themselves in the foot with every new item that gets released.
That's a good point, but I do hope that something major does happen so we could get real toys again. If this problem gets bad enough, Mattel might find a corporation that wishes to obtain the rights to Thomas and Friends. If indeed that does happen, I hope that company knows what all the fans want, and not how they can get to the rock bottom price of producing it. That came out wrong, but you know what I mean.

I'm sad. I was never really able to stick to Thomas and Friends long enough to buy stuff a lot. The closest I ever came to a "haul" was at a train fair. Now that Thomas Wood and its goofy-looking and awkward engines that are inferior to Thomas Wooden Railway has taken over, I feel like I lost my childhood. F in the chat. And I'm too cheap to buy anything off of eBay for order. I always loved the charm of buying at the store.

the classic trackmaster was WAYYYYY better, it was realistic and seemed like sodor. All the older sets felt like they had a feel to em. The sets had wayyyyyy better track, and actual good scaled loco's. Now a days the stupid Trackmaster revolution sets have NO feel to them at ALL!!!! they all feel just flashy and stupid. But i still like Wooden Railway
That was probably a goof the troublesome trucks had six wheels on the box picture but when you look at them inside the box maybe Mattel didn't care about it or that's just a mistake
