  • "For all the saints" (Sine Nomine) sung in procession on All Saints' Day. (It is sung in two parts here, verses 1-4 before a station at the font, and vv. 5-8 after.)
    1. For all the saints, who from their labors rest,
    who thee by faith before the world confessed,
    thy Name, O Jesus, be for ever blessed.
    Alleluia, Alleluia!
    2. Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might:
    thou, Lord, their Captain in the well-fought fight;
    thou, in the darkness drear, the one true Light.
    Alleluia, Alleluia!
    3. O may thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold,
    fight as the saints who nobly fought of old,
    and win, with them, the victor's crown of gold.
    Alleluia, Alleluia!
    4. O blest communion, fellowship divine!
    We feebly struggle, they in glory shine;
    yet all are one in thee, for all are thine.
    Alleluia, Alleluia!
    5. And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long,
    steals on the ear the distant triumph song,
    and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong.
    Alleluia, Alleluia!
    6. The golden evening brightens in the west;
    soon, soon to faithful warriors cometh rest;
    sweet is the calm of paradise the blest.
    Alleluia, Alleluia!
    7. But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day;
    the saints triumphant rise in bright array;
    the King of glory passes on his way.
    Alleluia, Alleluia!
    8. From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast,
    through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,
    singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost:
    Alleluia, Alleluia!
    Words: William Walsham How
    Music: Ralph Vaughan Williams (improvisations by Robert McCormick)

    I am a protestant and say this there is nothing to beat the majesty of
    a formal procession to start matins or mass. It sets the tone of the service. And a well played. Church organ, surpasses the racket from drums and guitars.

    One of my favorite hymns growing up. The reverence and sacredness of preparing the alter for worship is so amazing and beautiful to witness 🙏

      @@SaintMarksChurchPhiladelphiaYou've taught them to sing? What did you do, send them all to a parish church in the UK for a year!? In all seriousness though, this is such a major difference 'across the pond'. At least until recently, students were taught to sing, and usually sing parts, in UK primary schools. Whether 'public' or state. The same is obviously not true in the states.
      It does sound like the congregation is singing - so whatever you've done to encourage it, keep going!
      IIRC I first heard about this church around 2004 when I met someone at the Wanamaker Organ Day. He might have been the erstwhile organist. In any case he told me of a very high church Episcopalian church in Philly with a large AS pipe organ. Had to be this one ;-). Glad I can finally visit, virtually at least.

    Great Hymn! Great organist and well sung by congregation. It is possible to change the video mixer setting so it switches between cameras normally instead of dissolving to black between each camera change. God bless!

      @SaintMarksChurchPhiladelphia  Před 7 měsíci +15

      It's not virtually empty. There were about 100 people there. But this is a Wednesday evening service. How many churches do you know that are full on Wednesday evenings? (Or even Sundays, for that matter.)

    • @Rogerthatidea
      @Rogerthatidea Před 6 měsíci +2

      @@SaintMarksChurchPhiladelphia We do not have services on Wednesday evening, but Sundays are packed, requiring multiple times and venues. In our area the Catholic diocese is reducing the number of parishes from 130 to 35. I am not RC but am saddened by the decline. I love the grand cathedrals but get sad at seeing great churches virtually empty. A few years ago I was in St Stephan’s in Vienna, and only 50 worshippers were there for Sunday mass.

      It sounds as though your people on the worship team are also using those “7-11” type of of church music. Mine and my husband and I are members of a Baptist church that are using those redundant “7-11” songs. Thanks to Hillsong Church from Australia! That is supposedly which is same “model” church influencing many churches around the globe by implementing those “7-11” songs in possibly all churches irregardless of denominational preferences.

      The service was designed for an illiterate population of the middle ages. It was very important that the Gospel was told using all 5 senses like an angelic play. Some Churches have diminished the message by eliminating parts of the delivery. I personally like all the bells and whistles and as an alter boy the sounds of the Eucharist gave me goosebumps.
