    I was a navigator in one of those EA-3Bs! We did a little air show when Glen Hatch took command in 1969.

      Hi Ivan! Good to see your name. I took these videos with a Yashica movie camera I bought in Navy Exchange Rota. I remember you were duty office one time when I was the duty driver. I didn't know at the time you had been an AE too. Great good memories from a long, long time ago Ivan.

    I was in VQ-2 during it's final 2 years and decommission.... fascinating to see the way it was way back when!

      Didn't know it had decommissioned. When I got there, the Connie had just gone back to Conus. The flight line was exactly like it was shown. Hanger and duty office entrance. Whales were parked over closer to the washrack. Line was full of P3s. R25 "Budman"! Big decal on fuselage. Who remembers that? Was a cool place to live back then. I bet you miss it. I do! Bbqs on the roof. Horses on the beach and cafe con leche....or was it horses on the roof and bbqs on the beach?...hmmm. Anyway, Godspeed 'n good luck Sandeman.

    I was in VAQ-33, based at N.A.S., Norfolk...1971-1975 . We were an Electronic Countermeasures squadron. We had 4- ERA-3B's, 4- A-4 Skyhawks, 2- F-4 Phantoms and one Super Connie. I was a plane captain for the A-3's...they sure had a personality and I loved taking care of them

      Was a3 counter measures operator, never have heard any crew members talk about those nuke Bomb bay doors that open and close in 1.5 seconds. Or those door safety pins we inserted after every landing. If you flew in a-3 you remember...

    Back when the Navy was still the Navy. My father was in VQ-2 81-85 as an aircrew ATCS on EP-3’s. Said he did one flight in an EA-3 and said NOPE not for for me haha

    I flew in Ranger 12 out of NAS Key West in the mid 70's. Some of the spooks didn't like flying it after the Super Connies; but I did. I usually flew in post 5 (facing aft in back of the pilot in the cockpit. Had a great view!

    Thanks! As an AE-3, I was assigned to VAH-4 out of Whidbey Island, WA, c. 1967-68, serving aboard Bon Homme Richard (CVA-31), and Ticonderoga (CVA-14), respectively, flying 'Whales' (KA-3B) in the Gulf on refueling missions, with Dets operating out of Cubi Pt, Philippines, on rotation. Great films here.

      William Larson Small world! I was at Whidbey in Dec of 67 in a school before going to Rota. Also an AE.

      Ah, small world, indeed. A while back I sent an antique shop dealer in nearby Oak Harbor a 50 cal shell casing (spent), one of several I picked up while walking along the shores off-duty at Whidbey, just south of the airbase. The rocky coast along there was literally 'littered' with these WW2 vintage green gems, including many 20mms (perhaps fired from the A-3s?). Later found out they used this area during the WW2 (and later) for strafing practice. In any event, I had bought a RR lantern from this woman on ebay, and because she charged me so little, I sent her one of these shells with a note of explanation on its provenance. She then wrote back saying she gave it to her son (?) who was at the time restoring the last of the Navy's Catalinas still in existence. He had been hoping to eventually fly it on to Oshkosh for an upcoming airshow there, but have heard no more about it.
      By the way, some of the A-3s at Whidbey, c. '67 (not sure of the squadron) still had the the two 20s in their tail, whereas all VAH-4 whales by then (I think) had been converted for tanker duty. By '68, ours were designated under the KA-3B rubric. Recently been trying to match my photos of the Bonnie's ZB-897, 898, and 899 nose numbers (Det Lima), and the Tico's ZB-11, 12, 13 (Det 14) using their respective serial numbers, with those later converted for EC duty, etc, like the ones you had. Think I'll be dead before the job's finished, however.

      Did your dad know Mike Hughes? (my dad) He was based in Rota in the 60s before I was born. I think he flew on EA-3B's. He passed away in 02, and I have been trying to find out more about his service recently

    • @Bob-mm9sm
      @Bob-mm9sm  Před 7 lety +1

      Hello, your dad was a Navigator in VQ-2 in Rota, Spain when I was there in the late '60's. If you want to know more about VQ-2 Goggle VQ-2 or VQ-2 History. There is a VQ site on the internet. Capt. Don East (retired/deceased) has written a history on VQ-2 and it is on the internet. Some of my squadron mates knew your dad and flew with him. I did not fly as a crew member but worked on the planes in Rota and aboard ship.
