      I'm not a hipster and I'd do it. I'd get a shed on the surface where on regular days I'd hang up my coat and leave my shoes, then head on in. Almost everybody in my family is a bit weird in one way or another(most of them have issues of one kind or another which is probably why), and almost all of them have kids. Most of them would think the bunker itself is cool, but that I'm weird for living in one. But whether I'm weird or not doesn't matter. Whether or not I'm ready for WW3 matters. If you live in one, the chances of you being in one when it does, and therefore your chances of survival, skyrockets.

    we use galvanized steel all the time in roofing penetrations. we also have to protect the galvanized steel from standing water with a liquid membrane otherwise it'll rust out in ten years. also when you have a non porous object in the ground, water tends to pool around that object. I've taken out underground steel heating oil tanks where they were rusted at the water level, the bottom, also where ever something hard like a rock was pressed against the tank even with a protective coating.

    Great stuff. My friends dad back in 1960 had a corrugated bunker under his house. We weren't allowed to play there, but could occasionally visit. Coolest place ever. Access was via a ladder with a nautical type hatch hidden in a closet. Air system was hand cranked as was electric. Fold down bunks. I remember the simplicity of food storage he utilized. He simply stacked cans in the valleys of the corrugated wall. That way they took up no usable space.

    Really interesting and informative interview! I sure hope to have one of these one day.
    I DO think +Atlas Survival Shelters was being a bit optimistic about the worst case scenarios when speaking of how long someone may need to spend in the bunker. What about the case of an ongoing conflict? Imagine Europe during WWII. Or how about a pandemic? Or, in highly populated areas, an economic collapse? I just don't think its "crazy" to shoot for 30+ days if possible.

      And even for nuclear wars, it may go on for more than a year just to finish the tens of thousands of nuclear bombs US and Soviet made in the 80s... I think what Ron means is that a fallout shelter is designed to be used for less than a month, and if you do want a long term underground structure, it's probably fortress or something.

    I did the math by kg weight you would need 4x40ft shipping containers to hold enough supplies for 1 person, for 25 years. This if for dried food goods. Loo roll, hygeine, water purification (but not the water itself), etc everything i would need down to individual 30g dried veg portions at 10 portions of fruit/veg a day (vitamins and minerals are essential for health) as well as protein, fats and carbs. So to include a living space you would need at least 40x50ft bunker.

    If I had enough money:
    1: drill a hole deep enough that water would boil and turn into steam. and turn a steam generator to make lifetimes of energy.
    2:drill a second hole to collect ground water. With this I can run said steam generator; and water for every day use.
    3: build a bunker.
    4: in that bunker, have an area for a hydroponic farm. And it may help with oxygen ass well.
    With this, and a massvie amount bake up parts, I could last for a very long time.
    What do you think?

  • @RealNewsChannel
    @RealNewsChannel Před 5 lety +23

    It's totally untrue that the maximum time is 30 days that an individual needs to spend in either a fallout shelter or bomb shelter in order to avoid a lethal dose of gamma radiation from a nuclear attack. 30 days max is only true with an airburst high enough up that the blast doesn't draw up soil, debris or small particles into the mushroom cloud. And if you think that a nuclear war isn't going to include hundreds of ground strikes than you're a fool. Making that statement is a big red flag that you really don't know what you're talking about.
    The Russians have nuclear tipped missiles designed to strike U.S. underground bases, airfields, hydroelectric dams and ICBM sites. ALL of those are ground strikes that will cause MASSIVE amounts of lethal fallout as far as 300 miles downwind for periods of time extending well past 30 days. 90 days would be a good minimum. And after 90 days you'd still want to limit your above ground exposure and always sleep in your shelter.
    Finally, all shelters should be supplied with radiation detectors and dosimeters and the instruction manuals. That way there's no guessing as to how many rads per hour you are being exposed to. When the outside radiation level drops to 1/2 R per hour you're good to go for 8 hours per day of exposure. Remember radiation exposure is cumulative. Anything over 450 rads received in a short period of time can kill you. And right after a nuclear bomb goes off the fallout probably will be producing 1000 rads per hour. That means only 1/2 hour exposure and you're dead. Airbursts' fallout decays very rapidly, but not a ground burst. You can learn how to tell the difference between an airburst and a groundburst by the appearance of the mushroom clouds. Just do your homework.

      Nuclear bombs are a hoax? Sounds like a flat earther. Russia isn't going to target you personally they will target an area a city, a airport or a military target. The shelters is temporary you can leave the shelter and return at night, this this the most likely scenario. I myself will be placings my shelter 1 hour from my home or 3/4 of a days walk near a national forest

    The fallout will decay and you will be safe not to get cooked. The issue is that although alpha and beta radiation is quite harmless outside of the body, it is the most dangerous inside of the body.
    Alpha radiation is a helium atom being fired off with millions of electron volts of energy and a single atom has the potential obliterate the DNA of a cell and cause cancer, although most cells will simply die. The vast amount of nuclear material from a nuclear reactor meltdown and longer half-life is an issue. You don't get cooked alive from the gamma radiation, but there will be so much material that can kill you if it gets into your body and that material is quite long lived. These materials also tend to be extremely chemically toxic.
    Radioactive fallout was responsible for 340,000 to 690,000 American deaths from 1951 to 1973. I don't think anybody has fully calculated the death toll till the end of time. Losing an average of 2-3 persons per year to it over a billion years is still a death count in the billions. It isn't going to stop human life, but that is a lot of people who died as a result.
    Just remember the importance of at least dust masks and the correct kind of water filtration long after a nuclear detonation.

    • @abram730
      @abram730 Před 5 lety +2

      @Erich kempka I was speaking in terms of MOPP(Mission Oriented Protective Posture) with protective gear. Beta is not very penetrating. A 'mudroom' for a bunker should function for decontamination at the entrance with the bunker having positive air pressure.
      @slaytanic921
      The military found that ion-exchange membranes were the best at filtering out radioactive material. To prevent clogging use prefiltration to remove turbidity / suspended solids, particularly clay minerals.
      www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/408968.pdf
      If you are on a shoestring budget rig up a sand and activated carbon pre filter systems. You can get activated carbon for fish tank filtration for a low cost in bulk. A zero water filter uses ion-exchange, but have not been tested for fallout. Set it up to filter slowly by not putting too much water pressure behind it and use their tester only accept 0.0 or run it again. Using UV light to prevent algae growth in the filter would be good. You will know if you got algae from a fishy smell/taste. Drying or swapping filters can also prevent the issue.
      A good yet expensive pro system will have UV and a system to flush the filter with saltwater to extend the lifetime of the filter.

      @fazdoll Před 5 lety +2

      Alpha particles are a danger precisely because they are so easy to block. Sure it’s easy to prevent them from getting in through your skin. But if you eat or inhale alpha, your cells/skin prevent them from getting OUT. So that alpha-emitting material stays in your body a long time, doing damage.

It would be great if you made an updated video about nuclear war on how your opinions have changed or not changed and what you think is now a good plan, especially if you have some land out and away and your location isn't on the project nuclear bomb target list, like the FEMA projected nuclear war maps.

    Being in the confined space isn't really the challenge. I think the main challenge is knowing you can't leave. And on top of that, it is knowing that weeks down the road when you can finally leave the world you once knew will no longer be there. That you might not only have little to look forward to but that life might actually be even much worse once you do need to leave the shelter.

    GOOD QUESTION - HOW LONG COULD A PERSON TOLERATE BEING IN AN UNDERGROUND BUNKER ? Folks with claustrophobia probably couldn't even spend 1 day there. After a week, most people would go "island crazy" due to restricted space & lack of privacy. MAYBE a good solution would be a supply of nerve pills, or sleeping pills ! If you spent most of your time sleeping, or "zoned out", then being confined in a long tube wouldn't be so bad.

      Honestly it is the social people who will struggle the hardest. If you have access to the internet (not likely if you actually need the bunker) or a lot of video games and movies, you should be fine. I would absolutely hate to have anyone else in the bunker though, living with even your best friend in that scenario would eventually turn sour and you would get sick of each other very fast (thank you doors). Alone would be the way to rock it, with some open world games like Zelda BOTW and Red Dead 2, etc. Easy month.

      at Climate Change Preppers Facebook Group - you said we got 2 years, its already been a year, and and i kinda see us having more time than that - the sun is cooling off right now lots of sun spots,
      actually i think my research has indicated a 40 year period of global warming from 2023 to 2063 that will eventually melt the icecaps... also my research is showing a cold winter with lots of Snow for the winter of 2019 to 2020 this year for here in Ohio and Pennsylvania due to grand solar minimum.. but i think that eventually the solar minimum will end and like you say Climate Change Preppers eventually we will run out of time on preparing for climate change. But you are right on this - We do need to get off the Nuclear World War 3 kick and switch to the Climate change preparing kick though. if you live in Florida you got to buy your bug out location now for when climate change creates those world wide flood times come in 50 or so years by the year 2130.

    What about if there's a pandemic like a mass flu that's killing millions of people how long should you stay down in your bunker in a situation like that compared to if there was a nuclear bomb? would you need to stay down there over 30 days and make sure you have enough food and water and air to survive down there longer than 30 days while the pandemic hopefully subsides or kills everybody else on the surface or what how would that work?

That's clearly why these new shelter put two round tunnels in with the extra for food storage, water, fuel, etc. water, septic, electricity is all extra.

You may need to stay in your bunker for longer than 30 days.

    Canadian Prepper love your videos. Ron is a very prominent builder but I’m afraid his nuclear bioscience is quite misleading. There is no viable medical assessment in Soviet Atomic Energy Ministry archives and in department of energy US that posit a “safe” continuity strategy after a mass nuclear exchange unfortunately. Most of all 20 -200 foot optimal bursts produce fissile plasma to the effect of 1000 -5000 pounds of aerosol level particulate in cesium and strontium isotopes that are well effective in RAD administered dosage at 21-50 range effectively still at 24 hour effective range but still lethal in down %83.3333 Percent ongoing with a slow decay 5 years to 25 to 50 then remaining toxic at 0.12333 onward.
    Regardless of this major environmental factors are the real focus of long term survivability of these ecosystems holding up in a hermetically sealed facility for even over a year isn’t going to be the issue. High density aerosol dispersion at the level of 3000MT worldwide detonations that is considering major city infrastructure military and strategic targets nonetheless. For example a mobile missile wing arsenal of 300 topol M systems carrying live 3-6 sets of actual pits in a MERV type system are set to 50 to 100mt respectively. Covering about a city wide effective conflagration area of 5-10 miles major city. That gives you about 18,900 total Russian units in that entire command for land units. American setup is similar in the SSLBM force assessment. Given that much potential detonation radiological and geological atmospheric density would produce these tremendous winterizing effects by particulate alone, a single Castle Bravo aerosol assessment held 2400 dissolute fallout ppm in atmosphere with mesosphere sustainable high alt aerosol at similar ratio. Direct temperature drop correlation is 2-5 degrees with over effect toxicity still at 24 percent . Given the thyroid and carcinogenic studies into particulate effects and long term viability I think these things should be considered when discussing surface based survival after nuclear warfare.

Would this system be safe in way the air that goes in is purified first so that the water is safe to drink? And windmills is this an option for backup energy just in case the solar system fails? That 30 days max "down"time in a bunker might be a bit short sighted. Sure his one month rule fits nicely with radiation, but what about about a superbug, ebola (incubation in rare cases is greater than 20 days) or a bioweapon?
    No question that surviving the first 30 days of whatever should give you relative good long term chances.

    • @ChucksSEADnDEAD
      @ChucksSEADnDEAD Před 5 lety

      The thing is, you're not going to go down the bunker at the first sign of ebola. And when there's first signs of ebola in your country you know that you're already more than 20 days into the pandemic.
      You're probably only going down under when everyone is panicking and dozens if not hundreds are dying every day. When you go down, the disease will be at the point it is probably killing its hosts faster than it can get into contact with new ones.
