  • In this video I go through the colours I use when painting a portrait or figure.
The following is the basic painting palette
Michael Harding Lead White, Substitute: Titanium White
    Cadmium Yellow any brand
Rublev Blue Ridge Yellow Ochre. Substitute: Yellow Ochre
Zecchi Vermillion Red. Substitute: Cadmium Red Light
Old Holland Red Umber. Substitute: Burnt Sienna
Michael Harding or Winsor and Newton Burnt Umber
Winsor and Newton Olive Green. Substitute: an earth green
    Michael Harding Ivory Black
The specific colours are the best choices which will give the best result.Substitute brands can be Winsor and Newton which is available in most places. In Portugal I recommend Dartecor.
Here is the list of colours from a current workshop on Caravaggio:
Caravaggio’s palette consisted of the following colours: Lead White, Lead Tin Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Vermilion, Red Ochre, Umber, Verdigris, Carbon Black. The colours above are modern equivalents I use.

I’m just 4 years into this painting adventure ( I was a model for 8 years 2001-2009 for Anthony Ackrill after he got back to America after teaching at Florence Academy 1995-2000. )
