This was the first song I heard by this truly magical singer, and I wonder how many of today's vocalists will still be being listened to in 100 years time .

She was, and still is, amazing. The beauty and power of her voice transcends the primitive recording equipment of her time.

King did some of this also putting his own touch and it is all good. Bessie was a master and probably never knew it. First heard this in Diana Ross' portrayal of Billie Holiday in the movie Lady Sings The Blues. A great piece of singing, touches my heart its soulful even from way back then.
Released in June, 1923. One of the finest Blues songs, ever recorded.

There are some slight changes in this version...the one I originally heard said "..if my MAN ain't got no money, and I say take all mine honey..', here it's changed to "friend" & the last verse, more severe, said, "..if I'm beat up by my Poppa, I ain't gonna call no coppa...", .which they got pretty close to with the lyrics in this version, rather have him hit me than quit me...

Billie took Bessie’s style, smoothed it out and made it more tailored to jazz clubs and bistros of the 1930s and 40s and Mahalia “sanctified” Bessie’s vocal power and tone and soulful way of bending notes, and took it into the church. But they kept Bessie’s legacy going.
Much better than Taj Mahal but this gives roots to many "current" artists.
She had a great voice. This is one of the best versions of the song (my favorite is by Frank Stokes).
