SINKING - 28' Cape Dory Taking on Water Off Nahant, MA

  • In this video I was finishing a routine tow when a distress call came over the VHF radio. I quickly mobilized and got on scene with a 28" Cape Dory taking on water. I deployed an electric pump, primed and deployed a gas powered pump, and then a third electric pump. Once the flooding water was pumped out, we realized it was a leaking raw water intake hose that flooded the boat. We closed the raw water sea-cock and towed the vessel to it's home in the Saugus River.

    Great co-ordination by all. You even found the problem and shut that valve. Everyone safe. Big pat on the back.

    Always pays to have a towboat US membership. You may never need it, but if you do it's worth every penny. Nice job!

      If my pumps stop working on my 22 ft all I have is a little manual pump. If you lose battery power, which I have, you do have to call for a help. Which I didn’t. People helped me tow it in but I wasn’t taking on water as bad. Its not. Most people are clueless but I am not sure this guy did anything wrong. It’s a great community when you need help.

    Normally Cape Dory's are a solid boat. The keel is encapsulated and they are beachable.

    No one on towed vessel is wearing a life jacket. Small child hanging between boats next to fender while under tow. All hoses connections should be double clamped under the waterline. All hose connections under pressure should also be double clamped. Just my two cents.
    Important thing is everybody got back home safe.

    Did the boat not have a bilge pump of its own? If so, I would hope that the captain would consider investing in one.

    • @wickedsailorboston

      Raw water pump

    • @peterjannitto6520
      @peterjannitto6520 Před měsícem

      Every through hull should have a seacock on it and should be exercised regularly. When a hose clamp fails, you can stroke the valve and stop the flooding. Simple, but so many people don't bother.@@wickedsailorboston

    • @oday3514
      @oday3514 Před měsícem +3

      The stricken vessel had a broken hose clamp on the hose to the raw water pump on the engine. They closed the seacock, and stopped the water ingress, but this meant that they couldn't run the engine. To fix; put TWO new marine hose clamps on the raw water hose, and the boat should be good to go.

      Do you have a magic machine that can produce hose clamps out of thin air?? If I had one, that's what I would have done too. Unfortunately no one around us had one either so we settled for the tow in. Luckily this man had insurance and they covered it. 👌

    • @sentient8146
      @sentient8146 Před měsícem

      I have SeaTow and I've actually used them more than once. Nice response and plenty of help but i am surprised it took so long to get a pump in gear. I would have thought pumps were more integral to a rescue boat.

    • @wickedsailorboston
      @wickedsailorboston  Před měsícem +1

      @@sentient8146 We had an electric pump deployed within a minute of getting along side the vessel. We deployed a 2 inch gas powered pump to de-water a forward hatch area however the electric pump drained it too low for the intake to create a seal. Pumps are a very important part of a rescue/tow boat. We service our pumps and run them routinely to make sure they start up with no issue when we. need them.
