BEING just a stone's throw away from one another, the decision/ debate between living in Portland, OR or Vancouver, WA is one that many people have made (including us!)... And as Vancouver continues to grow, develop & diversify, this is becoming an even tougher and hotly-contested topic... Not to mention one of the most popular recommendations I'm asked to make almost daily!..
In this short episode of Living in the Pacific Northwest With Hal Byrd, we'll revisit this topic, and I'll share some up-to-the-moment data, facts and personal perspectives for your consideration if a move to or within The PNW is something you or someone you know is thinking about 🤔 💭. Enjoy - Hal #homewithhal

Vancouver = Drive to the office and have happy hour at Applebees.
Portland = Get high behind the coffee shop owned by your failed surgeon, blind-in-one-eye roommate.
Bend = The famous, expensive therapists you'll need after it all. Now that it's getting crowded, we're setting our sights on Minnesota. Who the hell wants to move to Minnesota? Nobody. That's the trick!
wooooow lmao
Vantucky said "NO!" to light rail.
A "yes" would have been the better choice.
Otherwise, it's just Salem north.
I just left after 25 years. It was a great beautiful city... It went from LIGHT to darkness in 10 years. Meth capital of the nation and Seattle is fighting for that right and D.C. Chicago, Miami... Then theirs Heroin. Big comeback in Portland. Go ahead and move there. We all got to learn our lessons. Good luck!
Where did you leave for?
@shaineyoung
Mostly the crime, drug addicts, change in attitude with people. The drug use is epidemic in Portland.
Where did you move to?

East coast.
What about customer service, call center or work from home jobs at both locations?
Good video I'm a portlander
Thank you!
We Are currently renting in the South Waterfront Portland..How is the building on the Vancouver Waterfront coming? Will there be high rise buildings under 1 mill for sale? Thank you.
Hi! I doubt there will be high rises like the ones in Portland because of the building restrictions in Vancouver. There's a 14-story apartment going in at Vancouver Waterfront and there is Kirkland Tower. Currently, a 1 bed/1bath unit is listed for $929k. Call me if you want to discuss and dive into what's brewing there (360) 818-4438
When does it start to get a lil chilly out there?
If you mean for Fall/Winter, I would say between Sept-Oct. We've had very warm Septembers and also cold & rainy. So it depends on the year, but by October there are definitely fall vibes with the weather & trees changing color
Since around 2015, and the crush of apts and condos built in Vancouver, not many whites. A day at the mall you see huge diversity. People fleeing Portland.
Hello! We are visiting the Vancouver area in October and have been looking at relocating in the future. I was wondering if you have any recommendations on places to see or anywhere to go to get a sense of the area? We are really excited to be there and want to make sure we get an idea of what it might be like to live there. Thank you! :)
Yes, I do! Please text me and I can send you my "Hal to See Vancouver" driving tour! 360-818-4438
Hello, I am looking for a place to live in Vancouver, I will be here until August 19th when my internship will and and then I must to return to Kansas. Can you recommend me something. Thanks
I am currently a licensed real estate agent and Transaction Coordinator in SoCal and have been seriously considering moving to Washington. Is it worth it to make the move and get licensed in Washington?
Stay in California where you belong
I've lived in Vancouver since the 80's. Vancouver has always been a ' bedroom " community. Almost all of Vancouver commutes over to Portland to work. There are no big employers in Vancouver because the state of WA does not give business a tax break. Oregon has a high taxes because they have no sales tax. Intel and Nike are based in Oregon and other large corporations. And the mindset is VERY DIFFERENT. Vancouver has always been a farming community and very WHITE. There is no cultural diversity, whereas there are more different cultures in Portland. It's always been known that people play in Portland but sleep in Vancouver.
I was wondering about the work situation. Seems to me it makes more sense to work in Vancouver and shop in Portland, because of taxes. Anyway, I hope to retire in Vancouver, so I don't have to worry about that.
Thank you for this 🤝🏾we’re looking at relocating to either Washington or Oregon and it helps put things more into a better perspective.
when you say Vancouver is very WHITE, is there no people of color there ? my family want to relocate there but honestly that is one thing i’m concerned about my children growing up not seeing anyone look like them.. are the people nice there ?
@@ciarakia Portland is very white also … it’s possibly the whitest major city in the US lol. Portland is about 75-76% white, Vancouver is 78% white. Vancouver has 3% black ppl, and Portland has about 5%.
It’s quite different from where I came from Houston, which was less then 50% white and was almost 25% black. But it’s a beautiful city.
@@ciarakia There are all the colors in the downtown area of Vancouver. Lot of the long time farm and home owners in outlying areas are probably more white.
Is that Walter White in the thumbnail? Why 😂
Haha 😂 it is. It was alluding to Walter White vs Heisenberg and mostly because we just like to have fun with things lol
@@halbyrd_ I love it, thanks for clarifying! I’ve lived in the Portland metro area my whole life and think you hit the nail on the head with the info!
Back when I lived in Portland, I actually lived in the "Coov", which for all intents and purposes, is a suburb. When I lived in Vancouver, I went to Portland State University, then worked in Oregon the entire time I lived there.
I'm from Portland Oregon I always wanted to move to Vancouver Washington to get Away from Portland
Come on over!
Portland Oregon and Vancouver Washington are way overpriced!. You need to make at least 100k a year to survive. Don't be in a hurry to move here.😊
Yup!
Homes shooting up from the 200K & 300Ks to over 500k. Ridiculous for what you get. Vancouver used to be affordable. Very liberal politics, so if crime occurs, better watch where you go.

Yup. Folks from California love it here. Great place to make more money... till it becomes a shit hole, then they'll move on to another place to infect.
