Great video again nicola. Your getting some rotten weather. How on earth did ye manage lambing before the new shed. We're getting a break in the bad the last week. Little or no rain sunny days. Just 1 left to lamb in my shed. All will have lambed in first cycle. Great to see you smiling. Chin up

Great video, i feel for you trying to lamb in that weather, it’s a very tough job. I used to lamb outside late March but a few years ago made the decision to start lambing a month later, best decision ever, less stressful on all concerned, lambs get a much better start on good grass in hopefully better weather so in my opinion grow on better so probably cost you less. Most are wormed once only eat grass and 90% are gone fat by September. To be fair I only lamb 200 ewes so small scale but I do it all on my own (except shearing 😂) Well done anyway👍

Good points made but we are restricted with lambing times because we need these lower lying fields to recover for making silage on so we need our lambs to be up and roaded before going to the hill early May…
We also don’t use much wormer and lambs away by October usually but this year with the weather still being so cold and wet i can see this being pushed back a bit.

Some of the issues with outdoor lambing have come about from the desire to have tight skinned lambs for the buyers in the auction 🤷‍♂️ Fields have also got larger with fewer trees and hedges have often lost their bottoms as nobody can afford to pay for hedges to be laid.
That said, the rains been extreme this year adding to the issues you are facing. It was a very wise investment and if the weather follows the eighties, this might not be the last wet winter and that shed will payback faster than expected…

Good to see the majority lambed successfully, would a few bedded up old pig arks put out in the fields before lambing work as a last resort for the ewes that lamb too soon?
    Take care Nicola. ❤

These sheds are used for cattle also. They need and have good ventilation also.

@@irenedavo3768we are restricted on lambing times because we need these lower lying fields to recover for making silage on (food for our animals over winter).
Therefore our lambs need to be old enough to travel out the hill with their mothers early May.

Small paddocks with lots of hedges that aren't simply used as fences allows you to control the weather. You get a hugelcultur going along the hedges that generates warmth from decay and also provides lots of mushrooms and sprouts for a larger part of the year, controls and lessens the wind, collects morning fogs and snow and blowing mist and even generates a little warmth in the air from friction with the wind. We used to raise sheep and goat in a far more subtle and intelligent way.
