When it comes to bass fishing, a lot is based upon certain opinions that we all have. At times these are true and other times they definitely are not.
In this video I wanted to talk about 5 key things that I have learned about Bass Fishing over the years that I believe are extremely valuable.

I've been bass fishing for over 68 years and enjoy your videos. Some comments: Don't rule out color. The Color Celector and the mechanics of how it was devised is an incredible story about it's development. I used the selector when conditions were less that favorable and found unbelievable success. 2. Couldn't agree more about stealth. The quieter you are, the better. 3. Talk to the old guys at the tackle stores and at lakes. Most of the lures I have in my tackle boxes are older than most fishermen. They still work. Best thing I can tell anyone is rule out any issue that might cause you to lose a fish: make sure you're using new line; make sure hooks are sharp; make sure your rods and reels have been cleaned and the drag is set perfectly for the lure(s) you are throwing; be patient and slow down or speed up your retrieve; If you're fishing with a partner, make sure you have different lures tied on (until you find which one is working); Stay alert, most bass don't wait for you to get ready to catch them; and the biggest thing for everyone is to take time to appreciate nature. The second biggest thing is to root for the bass sometimes. If they get off the hook, it's probably because you weren't prepared.
Thank you. That fifth tip hit the mark. I bank fish farm ponds and do not have many to choose from. In each one I have a starting point and I lap the pond. Once back to my start point I try something else. Lately it's been rubber, crank, spinner, top water. I chatter now and then to jig things up. I usually catch two descent fish. I call it throwing rocks method. Just keep throwing till you hit something.
I think it’s good that nobody told you this before because then you had the chance to learn it by yourself - and that’s multiplying joy of fishing adventures 👍🤠
One night flipping for Bass at Lake Patagonia in south Arizona I pulled up to a large patch of reeds and got my flipping stick ready. I stopped the engine about 30 feet from the reeds and put my trolling motor down, my intention was to pull between the shoreline and work the weeds on both sides of the boat. As I pulled up to that weed line the minute I turned the trolling motor on I saw the reeds being slammed from below the water as the fish departed the area back deep into the weeds! One about a five pound bass headed for the deep water and jumped right over the boat passing a few feet from my face. Needless to say I didn't catch a single bass out of that normally productive reed patch. So I began to use stealth especially on that heavily fished lake and did considerably better!

Interesting that you mentioned Bobby Lane’s flipping theories. In 1992 I was on the NY Federation State Team at the Eastern Divisional on the CT River. We lead wire to wire and won by drifting across weedy flats with the TM out of the water and everything in the boat turned off flipping a jig. It was brutally tough fishing and it took 12 of us 3 days of practice to develop the pattern!
Great stuff Tyler, thanks as always. I'm really trying to move areas sooner than i used to even if I know that "history" tells me there are fish in that spot (I rent a boat and no electronics). I've been much more successful this summer moving around and looking for targets that in my opinion are isolated and should hold fish.

Great video, and stealth is huge. I caught my PB at the time 20 yrs ago bank fishing a small South Jersey Pond. after hearing a tip about stealth There were several big 6+ lb bass bedding by the bank. This young kid told me they don't bite, a guy was here for and hour trying to catch them. I asked the kid to stay away from the area while I went on to fish the back of the pond for 90 minutes. When I came back I took one rod, with a jig and craw tied on, got down low and crawled up behind a tree about 6 feet back from the bank. first cast I hooked into one that weight 6.75 lbs. I have been a believer ever since.

I could not agree more about your and the scientist statement about Bass turning away from loud bait/lures, I saw with my own eyes in July-Sept where bass spooked away from lipless and Spinnerbaits but came to a plastic worm or creature or even a small plastic bluegill or swimbaits. I am not a finesse angler but it is the most affective way of catching bass.
I fish from motorized kayak and find, especially later in the season, paddling in the last 50yds makes all the difference - stealth.

In regards to Ken tracking that fish and having it move off cover if they used electronics or trolling motor, do you have an idea on how long until that fish would return to that piece of cover?
Just thinking about the impact of when you're graphing over a spot, how long should you be waiting to return to that spot to fish it.

Great video bud. I'm fairly new to bass fishing. Sometimes I find myself playing the "color" game. Lol. Recently though I've been more focused on 4 or 5 different lures and technique. Now, I just let my girlfriend pick the color 😂 keep up the great work. Shout out from NC.

Agreed! I'm way more interested in studies, & underwater footage of bass. Their behaviors, habitat, forage, even what their forage are doing. I could care less about any new lure mods! Give me that knowledge my kayak, couple big swimbaits & plastic worms, a frog. I'm good.
Good info. An exception. My wife and I fish the 'rubber', Texas Rigged. We fish to or 3 times a week from a 18ft pontoon. Each morning we start with a different color and either 3" or 4". Typical starting colors: Green Pumpkin & Blk Flake, Watermelon and /blk, Baby Bass, Watermelon/Blk& Red. It amazes us how we can stand side by side and one or the other will end up 2or 3 ahead of the other. A bait change to the bait d' jour and we both start catching. The in the afternoon that color often shuts off completely and we're looking for another color? I'll certainly say you're not wrong but in our non-scientific minds we think it's not the color it's the temperature of the color. Oddly we never catch a thing off White or Black, the 2 temperature extremes. Now we fish in a very deep Idaho reservoir @ 5500 feet where water temps rarely exceed 70 degrees. The all but rock lined lake is full of bass in the 6 -16" sizes. It is crazy fun and very fast. Seldom is the trip to the lake that we don't C&R 15 to 20 a piece. This lake could be the 'one off'. Just some info..........

Regarding your comments about the west coast. As an angler based in Northern California, I can attest that your comments hold true here as well. I've fished the CA Delta, the bass factory AKA Clearlake, and everything in between there and San Diego. Largemouth Bass were first introduced to CA waters in 1891 from Illinois and then Florida strain bass in 1959. So, it stands to reason, you'll observe similar behaviors.
I agree about color or lure. My cousin told me " if they are going to hit it, they are going to hit it". Color doesn't mean anything and it was true.

So true about being in the right area as opposed to throwing the right bait. Its such a waste of time fishing where there arent any fish.

How big are these areas you are talking about? 100 yard radius? 1km?
Except for California, there's not a whole lot of bass out here in the Rocky mountain region. They're hard to catch compared to Texas or Florida

Heard Kyle Welcher answer a question on the color of a bait he had used. He couldn’t remember because it didn’t even matter but what did matter was that he was casting it in the middle of fifteen of them so one of them was going to eat it lol
I'm not sure about the just cover water I've gone down the rabbit hole with light or bright baits for sunny days and dark or natural color baits on overcast days or dark water and I've tried a white worm got nothing and switch and boom get hits on the dark color I think there is some. Thing to colors but not as much as some say but even when trout fishing fish are picky and will live a color in the mor ing and want nothing to do with it later that day
I had a idea that a lot of bass didn't move as much as people like to think . Glad to see my hunch was correct with proof.
Colors on lures are a psychological marketing ploy. Bass will attack anything that moves if it thinks it’s an easy meal. I’m sure they keen in more on vibration and movement. I’ve paired a fire red craw trailer with a white jig and caught fish.

True story about color not mattering and the right spot. I went to a spot I’d been hammering fish on plastic. I busted what was on my hook from the previous week and went to get another. Holy sh*t!! I forgot my plastics bag. (I know! Im a dumba$$.) A guy came through and I stopped him and told him my situation and I’d buy ANY single pack of plastic he had. He offered up a pack and as a true fisherman would, he wouldn’t take my money. The hammering resumed.
The last tip is huge. I mostly fish redfish now rather than bass but it applies. So many days I spent fishing an area for hours only to catch nothing. Then switch to another area and instantly starting seeing reds and getting bites.

Lol stealth has always been everything in fishing. There’s an old- salt saying here in Florida about snook fishing and I’m sure it relates to all fish. >If you can see the snook, they can see you.
