    This is great. I am starting at the start with colour grading so this is very helpful. Also, I like the cut of your LUTS. Excellent value too, so that's a little early Xmas prez to myself.

    I use VIDEOGRADE for my iPad, I have some really expensive apps but they are so complicated they are useless, the VIDEOGRADE app is simple easy and I’m getting good result colour grading raw/d-log/flat photo and video.

    when filming on d-log with 180 degree rule and ND Filters, should i set the exposure to be as low as possible to underexpose? I found my footage to be still too overexposed even with ND Filters and thought maybe my exposure settings were too high.

    Funny timing lol I've been doing most "color grading" (ie not much lol) manually, but today I actually bought a LUT pack first time and what a difference it makes especially with convenience, I've been playing around with applying them to footage I already used to see how it affects it lol Do you have LUT packs for general cameras like mirrorless or just the DJI drone/pocket ones? 👏

    Great lesson Vic. I have a question. I am color blind (partial). How do you suggest I do color grade? I use scopes on LumaFusion to color grade. But I don’t know what I see is acceptable to others who are not color blind.

    • @VicBarry
      @VicBarry  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Hey Alan, that’s an interesting one and I’m not sure I can best advise. But I’ll have a go and let me know if it makes sense.
      From a color perspective, if an rgb parade is an equal then the white balance is pretty close to being correct. If the blue for example is higher than the red and green then there’s a bias towards blue in the image and so on.
      If skin tones are in the shot then making sure they’re on the skin tone line in the vector scope will help hugely.
      And if the vector scope is pretty full looking at hitting the edges then there is way too much saturation.
      And ensure that the waveform is a luma waveform. Once things are hitting over 100 the image or parts of it are over exposed and are blown out. Similar for shadows. If they drop below 0 then blacks are crushed and you’ve also lost detail.
      That’s my best shot at it Alan, maybe somebody else can pipe in here. But personally I rely on scopes more than anything else.
      On the flip side, what’s your audience. Are they expecting a color graded video? Would shooting things in “normal” color be an alternative and just go straight from camera with no grade?
      Regardless hope this has helped.

      @@VicBarry thank you for your tips. I video to post on my Facebook and social chat groups. Hence I have no compelling reason to color grade my video for general use but hey…I like to learn video color grading using tools available since scopes are available in the software.

    I have purchased the LUTs in description and would like to do some color correction along with them. Do you recommend I do the correction on an adjustment layer and add the creative LUT on top of the clip or how would you recommend to do it?

    • @VicBarry
      @VicBarry  Před 15 hodinami +1

      Thanks for the support. It all depends on the footage to be honest. You can stack adjustment layer on adjustment layer. In a lot of cases, these LUTS are a starting point, so have them on an adjustment layer and then go from there. Adjustment layers are easy to use and means you can grade a lot of clips instantly. Hope this helps

    Hey Vic, if you are shooting on a bright day, do you prioritise highlights and raise shadows if it makes other parts of the scene dark?
    I was shooting the other day and my subject was in shade for even lighting but my background was totally blown out. Bringing my highlight area left my scene pretty dark. Thoughts?

    • @VicBarry
      @VicBarry  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Hey 👋 always better to try and look after the highlights first. You might have some hope depending on how “uncrushed” the shadows. On a very bright day I’d definitely look at -0.7ev or more and see how it works out. Every scene is different so it’s 100% worth fiddling about trying to find a balance.
      ND Filters, while an extra add on, will also help.

    Why are my dlog videos automatically set to rec 709 in premiere?

  • @rezjrprod
    @rezjrprod Před měsícem

    Nice video but why do I feel that the log on the pocket is somewhat of a gimmick vs drone and other log profiles. There's very little difference between an unsaturated auto profile versus the D-Log.. doesn't seem as much dynamic range is say a drone like on my air2s. I'm probably going to do a side by side on mine desaturate the regular not log footage and then work on the log footage and see if there's actually a difference.. The dynamic range in the shadows and stuff like that doesn't seem as dramatic as in other logs.. Also I'm seeing a lot of banding in my footage and I see a little on yours as well..I wonder if that's a product of the "log" cough cough processing

    Do you have to color grade every single frame of your video?

    • @OurPortlandLife
      @OurPortlandLife Před 5 měsíci

      Nope! Edits are applied to each selected clip but another way is to create an adjustment layer and apply the corrections to that and drag it across all your clips (not perfect but can speed things up especially with footage shot together - same light, etc)

    Hi Vic. You said to click the heightch, what's a heightch? 😂, j/k.
    Do you feel like the dji image has a lot of contrast straight out of the camera? Whether it's normal or D-log m, mine seems to be very contrasty before grading at all. It's really noticeable on the low end of an s-curve. Either I'm doing something wrong or op3 images (video) has more contrast than I expected.
