I agree. Yamanashi also has some nice onsen and is famous for grapes and peaches. I'm also partial to the sake breweries there like Tanizakura and Shichiken.
I haven't really seen much of the Shingen-ko matsuri but had the honour of taking part in the parade.
In recent years the city has also rebuilt quite a bit of the castle. Unfortunately nobody has any proof what the main tower looked like so there's still discussion how or if to rebuild it.
The Takeda shrine where the castle of the Takeda clan was is also pretty nice. They have theatre plays there.

Few additional recommendations (Aomori, Tochigi, Shimane):
    2) Aomori also has the Nebuta festival in summer. If you haven't checked it out, you definitely should if it ever allows visitors again. It is also one of the most impressive festivals all over Japan.
I also found it relatable what you said about Yamagata pref to have a special place in your heart. For me it was Aomori, where I spent my first year in Japan. My very first stay was in Shimane tho, which is also why I can give a good recommendation for when you go there again (↓).
    9) Tochigi's main city, Utsunomiya, is only famous for Gyoza, which will be disappointing once you eat them, but for people who are fans of bars, Utsunomiya apparantly is an infamous bar town with many more or less famous bartenders. The beef in Tochigi is also extremely delicious.
    33) Shimane has one of the most important Shinto shrines in all of Japan, considered to be the oldest one. It is called Izumo Taisha and is probably Shimanes biggest tourist attraction. Foodwise it is also famous for soba and green tea, which is freshly produced there so it is very delicious. My husband and I actually plan to have our marriage ceremony at Izumo Taisha, because it is THE Shinto shrine for marriage. It was also the first Shinto shrine I ever visited when I was in Japan, I didn't understand at all the importance of it lol

    • @EbbFlowe
      @EbbFlowe Před 2 lety +6

My first stay in Japan was as a volunteer in Shimane as well, I came down here to recommend Izumo Taisha as well! I'm not sure if it's still operational these days, but near the shrine there's also a Japanese History museum that delves into Japanese creation mythology (Izanami/nagi, Susano'o, Orochi, etc) since legend has it that Izumo is where all of the gods of Japan originate from. Apparently all of the gods from throughout Japan gather in Izumo in October for some kind of summit.

The older man I took the burden off of for a while even stopped by the place I was staying to give me 5000 yen as thanks for the help! When I first caught one of your first 12 Days of Christmas video, I thought it was incredibly amusing - watching a cranky brit is just one of those things I enjoy. When I did eventually find out why you're doing this, I felt incredibly sad and my heart reaches out to you for not being able to visit family after 2 years of the craziness that took over the world. I'm now watching this video series, so I can hopefully help you commiserate and hey, at least be of some help even just online in getting over the disappointment you'll be experiencing this Christmas. Shimane Prefecture is definitely underrated! Every time I visit (usually on the Sunrise Izumo overnight train) I keep finding new places to visit. If you spend some time there, I absolutely recommend Gakuen-ji, a beautiful temple complex in the mountains behind Izumo City and the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, near Oda City.

#24 Mie: As someone living near Matsusaka, I suppose I should be happy we got some attention. But Matsusaka beef? Well, sure it’s one of the top 3 ‘wagyu’ brands, and yes it’s pretty fantastic (if you have a gazillion yen to shell out)…but if you’re coming all the way to Mie, you really should pay a visit to Ise Jingu. (If you don’t know, it’s the most sacred Shinto shrine in Japan… and a really fun area to hang out as well!) Just my opinion.

Actually your opinion on Nagoya is far from controversial. I remember reading an article not that long ago about a poll showing that Japanese people themselves ranked Nagoya as the major city they'd like to visit the least as tourists in all of Japan, and something along the lines of tourism officials of the city being aware of the bland reputation of it and vowing to do more to make it more attractive.

We went to Nagoya bc of Legoland, which was a lot of fun. But we didn’t see anything else in the city, and I think that’s because when I tried looking it up, nothing was really coming up being worth it to see. In fact strangers on the Shinkansen were genuinely surprised when we said we were going to Nagoya.

I totally agree with you, as a Japanese.😅 But if you are a car enthusiast, the nearby Toyota factory is a good educational location to see the history of Toyota. Or, if you like history or fantasy stuff, Atsuta Shrine is one of the top shrines in Japan, which keeps the legendary Kusanagi sword in it. Or, if you want gourmet food, I recommend Hitsumabushi, a type of eel rice. I think that's all I can recommend!

I studied abroad in Nagoya and while I disagree with it, I can understand why it's boring city compared to places like Tokyo and Osaka. I still recommend people to give it a try. If you're gonna visit there only once I highly recommend Nagoya Castle, which in my opinion is the better looking castle in all of Japan.

I haven't seen much of Nagoya but I liked the Nagoya City Science Museum. Would be a great visit for kids as you can try various experiments yourself.
And at the time they had a special exhibition on how the old monster films were done, complete with a small city district as model scale that you could walk through and cameras would film the "giants" strolling through it.
When it cames to castles, my favourite one is Matsumoto. Inuyama and Matsumae are also pretty cool. Shikoku and Kyuushu have some pretty nice ones though like as mentioned Maruyama. I don't like the concrete replicas like Oosaka.
