I think this is the best interpretation of Dvorak New World ever you can listen to...

My Dad used to study under Celibidache and he always tells me about his incredibly high standards and strictness. He would for example have the students memorize a piece over night without even listening to it and then conduct (or play it) it the next day which just seems unbelievably difficult to me. He also seems to have been a very funny person to be around at times, though. Because my Dad has been telling me these stories since I was very little (I´m only 15 now so yeah), in my mind Celibidache has always been this bigger than life sort of image that wasn´t entirely human and watching him perform for the first time in my life is just mind blowing to me. Seeing everything my Dad told me about him in the way he conducts feels a bit surreal to be quite honest but it makes me very happy at the same time :)
my music teacher tells me about it
Wow that’s mind blowing I had never actually heard of someone who knew Celibidache in person. You’re very lucky. I am from Italy and I am myself also very young only 17. I’ve discovered him like 3 years ago and he’s been the only teacher for me since then. I could resemble in my way of thinking everything he said. Must be awesome to have a so close sibling that can like talk u about him every day ahahah.
@@EldenScraps Great! I'm 27y. And have been doing the same You're doing, but for a longer time. Celi died few years after I was borm and when I watch this performance I think: woah! I was not born at that time! That's incredible, because It looks like they are all performing today and he is still alive conducting. I would like to show to the World or at least to my country How he was right in his conducting technic and how human he could be...
Renan Pablo yes that’s exactly the same sensation I have. Like he’s out there somewhere sitting in a garden waiting for music to be done just one more time.

This orchestra treats this piece with such respect...
I agree with you
But the last bar of the first cor anglais solo is played by the 1st oboist, with an oboe.
As well they should!
I cant tell if you know so much about classical music or just be pretending... if its first, I envy you =)
I would like to add: with so much love...
The Karajan version is great, but this is just something else entirely. Absolutely fantastic. It's so different, I can hear more notes than in the one by Karajan, and it is not due to difference of sound quality. Celibidache was out of this world.
youre completely right. Bernstein and Kajaan are good ones... but Celibidache's one is above all. example: part from 42:58 to 44:10 is so refined, so smoothing

The playing by timpanist Peter Sadlo is Outstanding! RIP, Peter
I never heard this interpretation before..Magnificent...could be my joy at age 88.. clearly, Dvorak would be proud to hear this from his Heavenly home!
👍💙🥰
Is he in heaven?
No other performance compares. I can't even listen to it faster now.
Celibidache is a genius in bringing out the best of this symphony.
You're right. I just came here after listening to the Karajan Berliner version. Too fast, I thought. Even though I have listened to it before and appreciated it. Realized that it was because in my head I was hearing this Celibidache version!
Jo génius jak ukrást kdejakou hudební myšlenku, hodně si ukradl od Beethovena
I have to come back to this every now and again to reaffirm the fact that this symphony is so much better when taken slow
I started out thinking, "Oooh this is too slow". After about five minutes this changed to, "Aaahh, I've been listening too fast". Watching Celibidache conduct makes it all make sense - you can just see that he understands the music. He conducts with such wisdom, it reminded me of my Dad reading me stories when I was a child sat on his knee - a bit weird, but hopefully you understand what I mean.
+toastedhippo "Aaahh, I've been listening too fast"
Yes, I did, too. :)
+pega17pl me too I felt it's real song..
+toastedhippo But Scherzo Molto Vivace is Scherzo Molto Vivace at the end of the day, not Andante Non Troppo!
+toastedhippo agree, this interpretation is my favorite. the slower tempo reveal reveals so much
+Neil Hazell You have a point, but it's still a relative not an absolute measure. If all the tempoes are proportionately slower or faster, then the whole piece still holds its integrity, wouldn't you say so?
Apart from the magnificent conducting and the great musicians, let me praise something that isn't mentioned here very often: the amazing acustics of this concert hall and the perfect camera work/directing! That was on point.
My thoughts exactly. Great recording.
That's true. Thank you for reminding❤
Excelente observación. De gran ayuda su aporte experimentado.
Grande, Maestro Cellibidache! 💐💐💐🌹🌹🌹😍
The audio mixers. Bravo!
The slowest interpretation I ever heard with a great respect for the details and an outstanding transparency - so beautiful !
Omg.. very. The problem is while it is technically excellent, when I close my eyes, I dont hear emotion.
Way too tired and slow. Imagine Klieber doing this piece? Yes, exacting but I’m sleeping. He doesn’t get it.
Celibidache was a magician. Those who criticize haven't got any idea of what real music is. The best thing to avoid their ignorance is to listen. It is the only solution.
This piece never fails to please, but this performance is just awesome!

A once in a lifetime performance. Very grateful for Sergio and every musician in the Philharmonic.
This music is one of many things that I am very proud of as a Czech citizen.
I had heard Dvorak's 9th symphony for over a hundred times, but Celibidache's version offers so many surprises, the details that I had not notices before. The clarity of the sound and the structure of the music is superb !
Well said!
Celibidache!
it is, good ears. I love him too .precise but rich motion , ,,,
It is Celibidache's intimate knowledge of the purpose of every melody within the symphony and how to set tempos that allow both Dvorak's genius and the virtuosity of the players to shine. This rendition - in my mind -- is as close to what Dvorak intended as you can get.

I love when a movement ends, and a quarter of the audience has a coughing fit.
K J/K It's always like that in germany for some reason... really gets on my nerves.
You should come to Spain. It's not coughing fits here, no, we've got a full-blown Coughing Chorus!!!
Apparently there is a psychological explanation for this - something about releasing emotional tension brought on by the music or something like that.
KittyFluff Love When else are you supposed to cough? It would be rude to do it while the movement is played. So you hold it back and cough in the breaks.
You may sometimes see me selling cough drops in the lobby.
Sergiu Celibidache visited my country (Chile) first in 1952 and 1953, creating a sensation in the musical community. At that time he was being denied the direction of the Berliner Philharmoniker where he was the stable conductor and the rightful heir of Fürtwangler. He came to Chile a second time in 1992, this time with his Münchner Philharmoniker. His two visits to Chile were duly appreciated. The 1992 visit was just one year after this fantastic video recording of the Dvorak 9th. His program was Mozart 40th and Beethoven 5th. He would die rather soon afterwards. He was an elderly man, had some difficulty walking, he had to conduct sitting down, but his mastery and control over the orchestra were unsurpassed. A real hero of modern times. Thanks for uploading.

This movement (Largo) is so beautiful it was re-named in popular music (Jane Froman) "Going Home" --- I want this piece played at my funeral.
Fantastic Tempo, when compare to von Karajan version with the Berlin Philharmonic, this rendition is more paused and more dramatic, as all the melody details come through clean and thus showing the richness of the Artwork. Sensational with high level of Panache and feel. Wonderful - Bravissimo !!

Very accurate and responsive conductor ever seen. In addition to the baton (4:26), he uses lots of facial expressions. Everybody has to play carefully and precisely the way he wants, any errors get caught (27:30 and 34:58). The largo part is the most beautiful, the piece I have listened for many years, never enough.

So many here have commented on Celibidache's 55-minute read of a work often performed in 48 minutes or less. I have been listening to this symphony for 55 years or more by dozens of excellent orchestras under dozens of top conductors; no-one has ever gotten to the heart of every melody and found the composer's soul in every tempo as with this rendition. It is timeless and, in a word, perfect.
Thanks Brian, your comments add to the culture of music through erudition and sublime objectivity.
I was brought up on the Chicago Symphony version - l'm now 77 - so maybe that's why for me it's the best. There was something about the coda of this one which didn't work for me. Perhaps someone who understands music could suggest why not?!

Wow cool
Wow, I discovered this masterpiece (especially the 4th movement) thanks to a documentary about the History of... NYC. And this piece was heard at the moment the camera was on the Statue of Liberty.
What a beautiful piece of
Music so soft and calming great symphony
For me this is the best interpretation of the best Dvorák
50 or so years ago, my father instilled in me a love for classical music. The largo in this symphony is one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever heard. It brings hope to the heart and sunshine for the eyes.
It's my understanding that the 2nd Movement (Largo) is based on a Negro spiritual Dvorak heard during his visit to the U.S. (1892-1895). From Wikipedia: "Dvořák was interested in Native American music and the African-American spirituals he heard in North America. While director of the National Conservatory he encountered an African-American student, Harry T. Burleigh, who sang traditional spirituals to him. Burleigh, later a composer himself, said that Dvořák had absorbed their "spirit" before writing his own melodies.
Dvořák stated: I am convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies. These can be the foundation of a serious and original school of composition, to be developed in the United States. These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are the folk songs of America and your composers must turn to them."
The part starting at 5:09 has got to be one of the most beautiful music moments ever written, the way it grows and grows and then just blossoms is breathtaking...
Maestro CELIDIBACHE and his slow paces... but, ahhh, all the great detail that is revealed by this slow pacing! A beauty!
Philippe Renaud That's okay. I rather hear that than others who do it so fast like they're in a race.
Erin Biggs What they're really doing is conduct a Hollywood cowboy movie. They're forgetting this is NOT a soundtrack!
I know. Every note on these pieces hold meaning. Its all in the details
Erin Biggs Amen! Especially with this Symphony from the New World that Dvorak spent 3 years in the United States to write!
+Philippe Renaud An interesting note: If you listen to recordings of classical music starting in the '60s and '70s on up to the current time, you frequently can notice that, over the years, conductors and chamber musicians gradually began playing the great works at a faster and faster tempo.
Not sure what that means. Maybe it's a comment on the modern short attention span or the hectic pace of life today.
Enjoyed this conductor's slower, measured, studied pace, as it allowed me to clearly absorb this wonderful symphony. The conductor is clearly in command without any histrionics! Loved that famous 2nd movement. And learning to appreciate the other movements too. This has become my go to for Dvorak's 9th.
This was the first recording of this symphony I listened to. So naturally it sounds right, while everything else sounds hurried. Best rendition of a very well known symphony.
Quante melodie si possono creare con sole sette notte: questa è un vero "Miracolo". È talmente Bella, che non mi stanco mai di ascoltarla in ogni esecuzione possibile. Un Capolavoro Eterno. Grazie A. Dvorak, Grazie Maestro Celibidache, Grazie a tutti i maestri dell'orchestra. ❤
Best rendition I have ever heard. If only the billions spent on war could go towards helping people become part of an orchestra like this.
Hello Ian. Each one his taste. Personnally I find it lacks some stamina (don't know the precise word : I'm French). For instance at 2min 35 sec the "attaque" of instruments is a bit weak, almost heavy. I am not an absolute fan of Karajan (often too nervous) but I prefer his rendition (with Vienna Philarmonic). I am still investigating to find an old version (was on vinyl LP 12", conductor forgotten ?) which was my favourite when I was young in the fifties.
Have a nice day.
My mother played a vinyl 12" in the fifties and sixties all the time, hence I got very used to the timing and interpretation. This version is the closest I've heard. Maybe your old fifties version is the same. Cheers
I know what you mean - the vinyl version in our house was with Rafael Kubelik, and it becomes definitive if you hear it 50 times by the age of 10!
Just found the recording. It is by the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra conducted by Joseph Krips. It is on You Tube.
Ian Giles While I appreciate and understand what you mean, there are sadly other militia groups who will attack others regardless whether the orchestra is fantastic or not. But I do understand where you're coming from :)
Somehow, Celibidache's interpretations feel more precise to me than a lot of other conductor's. The clarity of this recording is incredible.
For me it is the only orthodox Version .
Pieces like this make you realize that there's a lot to life. The melody in the second movement is gorgeous.

This is the best rendition of this symphony to me.
Celibidache has one of the best understandings of music ever, beautiful rendition. The most creative performance of Devorak's masterpiece.
The 2nd movement is masterfully conducted and played. The pacing, precision, volume, mood. It's almost painfully beautiful. Can't help but think Dvorak (and Celibidache) had a great understanding of life, just from hearing the range of emotions expressed. I know Celibidache was influenced greatly by Zen Buddhism and I think it shines through really well in this movement.
It's so beautiful how Celibidache understands pacing and emphasis. You are so right, you can feel it shinning. Absolutely superb.

I have no competence on classic music, so my comment is like the one of an illitterate caveman: this symphony is awesome!!! When I was a kid I used to listen this kind of music with my father who was (and still is) a passionate fan of Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak and Smetana. "Old Lady", why you think about age? I am only 60y old and feel young when I am able to hear this music. And I played it myself in end of the 70th....
I absolutely LOVE Celibidache. Not just here in this (wonderful) symphony, but in (almost) everything he does. He really inspires me. He is just not like the others. There is something magic, something very special about this man, who stayed true to himself and genuine till the end.
Despite being one of the most talented conductors of the 20th century (I can't extend the period, but feel it probably could), he always fought against the marketing and sale of recordings. Maybe this helped him stay authentic (or vice versa, if you see what I mean).
What an apt position re everything Celibidache stood for!

The incredible orchestra and the Best conductor ever seen!
Celibidache was one of the great conductors of the 20th century. I saw him live in nine of the ninety-nine concerts he conducted in Spain throughout hsi career, between 1989 and 1994 (the ones I saw). He was very different from other conductors. Sadly, though, in spite of his unworldly attention to detail, not once did he drive me to tears, which is something that other conductors have done (Zubin Mehta, for instance, twice).
I can never get enough of this, and I`ve been listening to this for 60 years. Thanks Dvorak.
The entrance of those horns at 3.52 preceded by the timpani (Peter Sadlo) at 3.43, then the violins .......... Those horns, My God, amazing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For me, Mastro Celibidache's interpretation is ULTIMATE----once I hear it, all other versions are simply STRANGE
There is an inner logic to the slow tempo in the second movement that gives a sense of serenity and almost hypnotic atmmosphere, which to my mind adds more than it detracts from the work. It is an unusual reading but it works. Celibidache actually captures the very flavor of middle America during that period in its history.
I do agree with you about the 2nd movement. Too many conductors, included the venerated Karel Ancerl (1958) play it too fast. Anyway I can't understand why the 1st and 3rd movement are that slow while the Final one is really impressively majestic and I don't care if it's a bit slower than other versions. Celibidache really caught the essence of this masterpiece. According to me the best ever version of this symphony is Ferenc FRISCAY with Berliner Philharmonic Orchestra in 1960. Unfortunately no video available, only audio... (4th movement at watch?v=1grGSJlbUnE)
Oh, God, there is bound to be someone who is advocating such lunacy.
Of course, pay no attention to the composer himself who clearly marked quaver=52

I agree!
Andrey Rubtsov what bullshit!
***** While Dvorak was a romantic composer, the programatic music of the time are used in practically all the music, even if it's not technically labelled a tone poem. This is actually based heavily on the Tale of Hiawatha, the second movement being the march to get Minnehaha, as well as a funeral march, the scherzo being a musical depiction of Hiawathas wedding, but it is a loose "New World" theme as it also has a lot of basis and borrowing from Germanic music, which Dvorak really did try and emulate and become a part of, despite the Germans pigeonholing him as a Czeck composer.
This music will always be immortal.
Ich kann nur eines sagen: die größte, schönste Interpretation dieses Meisterwerks, die ich je gehört habe!!

pega17pl No. That's the conductor's perogative--his creative vision. I think that it's convincing even if the tempo at times is a little slower than usual. If everyone used the same tempos, then you don't need a conductor. A metronome would suffice. Also, this is a live performance and in live performances conductors and musicians do things differently than if they were sitting in a recording studio. I think that if you were in the audience, this performance would have been superb.

I think there might be a trend for great conductors to explore slower tempos as they get older. Bernstein, Karajan, similar deal. Makes sense.
@@joeschmo5699 sorry, but in Celibidache's case, the age has nothing to do with the pace... Follow his philosophy for music and you will understand.
This is amazing!!Celibidaches' interpretation is the best in my opinion. The tempi and the dynamics are so clear and everone plays after the conductor so you hear litterally an orchestra and not just many instruments anyhow together, it sounds like one instrument
Absolutely on point. I can't stand the versions that rush through the third movement, especially.
When you stay on your chair in front of your screen watching the vid till the end of the applause, you know you've had a terrific moment of beauty. Thks for posting.
I had the most beautiful part of the largo played at my parents' funerals. Still cry whenever I hear it.
I was doing a homework piece then I saw some classical music and was like what the heck lets watch this. I have been sitting here for two hours listning to classical music
+Funny studios - I've been listening to classical music for the past fifty years and will continue to do so through my dying days. Started in my teens, thanks to my mother, and passed it onto my sons. It is educational and uplifting. It will make you worldly and a much smarter person. It will make you want to study world history and other cultures and that my friend will give you a good philosophical foundation. All that aside, it sure beats listening to rap music!
+Funny studios Hey, I got in contact the first time with Sir Soltis Beethoven No. 9. Search for it here on YT it really is electrifying.
Greets from Germany!
+Funny studios that's how it's often starting ;)

Story of my life.
+spidersinspace Listening to music can never beat anything... And if you'd ever took the time to really listen to good rap music, you wouldn't think like that...
Una straordinaria interpretazione, ampia, equilibrata, con una ampiezza sinfonica senza pari. Il più grande direttore d'orchestra mai esistito
Lo mejor de lo mejor !!!Autor,Director y Orquesta....
Dvořák Symphony No 9 requires the highest definition of the wind instruments for the 4 parts of Gallant, Romantic, Happiness and Hope. And the Munich Philharmonic has it all. Great performance!
