Technically, Friends is a story of Jimin and V's friendship as bestfriends.
V and Jimin are both born in 1995 and called as the 95 duo. They are schoolmates while they are trainees and Jimin said that Taehyung was his first ever friend in school, Jimin was a shy guy because he came from Busan, and he was shy to talk because of his accent, while V is the friendly one. V was the first one to approach him when while he was talking to his friends, he noticed that Jimin was alone in the corner of the room, That's why there are lyrics related to their school days.
Jimin called V as his alien because V's personality is very unique (even the other members said that) He was a very playful kid and he usually do things that are very strange for the members.
The dumpling incident as explained by them, is when they got a huge argument about Jimin wanted to eat dumplings after the practice while V wanted to eat before practice because he was so hungry because he came from his drama shoot that time. They fought and did not talk to each other for almost 2 days (according to V) and then they talk while drinking to reconcile and V realized that they got closer after that. As years passed by, it just became a funny story for them and for the members.
Jimin's small pinky became a gag joke for the members because it was really small, compared to the other members (Jimin have a very small hands) opposite to taehyung that have really long fingers, but in the song it became a symbolism of their promise to each other that whatever happens they will stick together even if they are not BTS anymore, through thick and thin.
The dreamcatcher I think it was when Jimin gave V a dreamcatcher because V usually have bad dreams, and V was so touched because of that. (It was said and Jimin really gave the dreamcatcher to V in Summer Package 2017 in Palawan)
Jimin and V's friendship is so precious that they called each other as soulmates.
V have said that Jimin is considered as his bestfriend among the group, Jimin was there for him in every situation, he cried and laughed with him. Jimin was there in time of his need. He wrote it in his letter for Jimin in Bon Voyage Season 2, Episode 8.
Jimin really said that this is a very emotional song for him and if one day they will perform it on stage, he will really go emotional.
RM said that he can't write a song about VMIN's (Jimin and V) unique friendship because they are the only one that can describe what kind of bond they have.
Jimin was the producer of this song.
Their friendship is strong, and unbreakable. That's why this song is so precious for the two of them.

FUN FACT:❣JIMIN wrote the lyrics, composed, & helped produce the song "FRIENDS"! Although, as Jimin himself, mentioned, he did text Tae everyday to discuss & decide some of the lyrics in Tae's parts of the song!

So here’s their story the best I can put it:
Taehyung and Jimin went to school together. Everyone made fun on Jimin because he had a Busan accent (korean equivalent of a southern accent) and Taehyung stood up for him and they became best friends.
They then trained together for a bit, the company had a meeting, and Taehyung said he would love for Jimin to join the group.
They then debuted together and now share their career together
The alien thing is because they all call Taehyung alien, and the pinky thing is in a run episode Taehyung and Jimin compared pinky sizes, and Taehyungs was twice the size of Jimins.
The dumpling incident was one day Taehyung wanted to eat dumplings before practice, and Jimin wanted him to wait until after practice. They didn’t talk for 2 days, then had a drink and made up. That’s what “hey Jimin today means” that’s a way of asking someone for drinks in korean. Taehyung said he never knew how he could fight with someone like Jimin after Jimin said what he said that the table with Taehyung.
The Dreamcatcher reference was when Taehyung had a nightmare, Jimin bought him a dreamcatcher because he couldn’t be there to comfort him, and it hangs in Taehyungs room now.
The soulmate thing is because they’ve known each other for so long, and everyone in BTS agrees that they’re the best pair. They are the best of friends, and this song is about wanting to stay friends once they disband.
Kendyll :3 they definitely have a beautiful story. But it is important to note that they didn’t meet prior to BigHit, they ended up at the same school bc that is the school BigHit put them in. Tae entered the company first then Jimin.
Actually, they met first as trainees then Jimin transferred to Tae's school because BigHit put him there. Jimin was kicked out 8 times in total from BTS and he was kicked out the last time when they were about to debut and tae said he didn't want to debut without Jimin so they had to put Jimin back in the lineup.

Jimin was the last one to enter BTS, not Taehyung, I just added it up coz' it confuses people because V was the last member to be announced as one of the members of BTS
That must have been a lot to write. I get jealous of V and Jimin sometimes wanting that kind of friendship. I hope V and Jimin always be soulmates ( as in fiends ofc ) I hope you rested your hands because this was a lot to write. I do hope they don't disband and I don't like the fact of somebody bringing it up. This is amazing information for Justin, only if he noticed you.

The way they care for each other and how they are willing to do anything for each other just makes me wanna cry all the time! Uh, correction: Jimin has the shortest training period, he came all the way from Busan to get his training. V became a trainee before Jimin and being a bright kid, V has no problem making friends in school. Jimin was shy and V helped him making friends in school

Fun facts about the lyrics
1. Jimin's line "hello my alien". Alien was Tae old nickname because of his unique n 4D personality that people found out as interesting, funny yet weird (because out of box). But this nickname didnt get use anymore
2. Tae's lyrics mentioning "promise with ur little pinky". Jimin has the smallest pinky finger in the group n jimin also has a solo song 'promise'
3. Tae's line " hey Jimin today". This is BTS inside joke to call every members who coming late when they get ready to go out or for work. It because Jimin often get late, so when other come late than Jimin they will call the late member "hey, you are Jimin today".
4. The dumpling incident that Jimin mentioned, Tae n Jimin once fight about dumplings. They want to eat dumplings together but they get fight for what time or when they will eat it, it's before they went to practice or after the practice lol and this was also the time V wrote the song 4 O'clock bcoz of this incident.
5. The dreamcatcher that hanging in Tae's room for 7 years. It when Tae told Jimin that he had a nightmare n it makes him hard to get sleep well. So Jimin bought a dreamcather for Tae in hope it can protect him n catch Tae's nightmare so he can sleep well.
6.even all BTS members is close to each others, but Tae n Jimin often said that they are a soulmate for each others n they want to be a friend forever even they are being a granpa.

I love this song so much, V and Jimin's friendship is the best. Lots of ppl have explained the references, but I'll add a few. Jimin got V the dreamcatcher, as according to Jimin, V had a nightmare and went to Jimin's room cause he was scared, but Jimin was sleepy and kicked him out - Jimin didn't remember, but the staff must have told him the next day, hence the gift. Also, any BTS fan knows Jimin and V are soulmates - they don't just call each other that, the other members of BTS do as well. Vmin are the best duo too, voted by the other members in American Hustle Life.

to me, i think that the best of the song really reflects what the songs about. their friendship is really goofy on the outside and upbeat. it’s full of fun and lots of love and passion. it’s bright and happy. they’re having fun. then the bridge hits and it’s calm and on the verge of being super sentimental. like how no matter what they’re their for each other on their lows even if they fight. there’s always a dark side to friendships with sadness but as long as they’re together they can tackle all their problems which is why it comes back to being happy and upbeat and hit you with “you are my soulmate”
to me it’s their promise to stay together. they really are best friends. true soulmates.

I moved to Seoul to peruse my career and had to leave her in our small city back in the US. I miss her everyday!
