- Bristol is a beautiful place. We've been singing this cover of The Last Saskatchewan Pirate by the Arrogant Worms almost as long as we've been singing together as a band. We saw it as a great opportunity to visit some of the highlights of our home town and do something a little goofy.
Artistic inspiration for this video drawn from The Dead South's incredible video for In Hell I'll Be In Good Company.

I like that in one clip some people clearly recognized you but didn't want to bother you before going their way, they looked so excited lol.
Time stamp?
@@piplupcola 2:18
pretty sure that’s cuz their friends walked in front of the camera
Just so you fellas know, "hoist up the thing" has officially become the slogan I'm using to push myself to do good things in the world.
It's pretty popular under alumni of my study this year ;)
It's an uplifting, upbeat song! No wonder hahah!
If I ever need a pick me up, it's my go to!
I don’t know what I’m doing, but I’m determined as fuck to do it
Hoist up all the things!
I'm a Canadian and I love the Last Saskatchewan Pirate song. This is brilliant. Loved it.
Because of how smooth those cuts are, with Andy's lips never skipping a beat, and JD's hat throw being so natural, I thought this might be just a greenscreen flashing behind them. But if you look at their hair, especially Robbie's, you'll notice it instantly shift at each scene change based on the direction the wind is blowing. Also, there are a couple places where they do change the arrangement a bit, and one of the scenes they visited casts them in a shadow.
This and The Mary Ellen Carter have really made me realize just how many shanties are Canadian. Makes me proud to be a canuck.
Okay, the tractor bit provided me with some greatly needed laughter. I love this song, it is already very silly, but the tractor bit in the middle and at the end had me howling with laughter after a rather rough day. Thank you, and never stop being silly!
I was hoping the last scene would be them chasing the tractor.
@@Cbyneorne at the very end they are riding the tractor chasing the farmer
I love that you can date the filming of this by Robbie’s purple hair 😂
New album releasing on the 28th Jan 2022! Preorder now and check out all the fancy new merch at preorder.thelongestjohns.com
Not to be rude or anything, but it looks like you said 2020 instead of 2022.
@@averythecatto Well then we're two years late. :D
They misspelled it. :)
@@FloxieImpy we have to go back in past to wait for this
Well, I mean, it's technically "the 28th of Third-January 2020" if you don't abbreviate.
Oh, hey! this is not (Directly) related to this song, but I'd just like to offer my congratulations to the City of Bristol, and all its citizens, for acquitting the Colston Four of all charges, today. I found out about it right after seeing this video. Hooray for being on the right side of history.✊🏻✊🏽✊🏽☮
Ok so I know this song as The Last Saskatchewan Pirate, so all the lyric changes made me legit cackle as a Canadian who hopped the pond :) thanks for the show lads!
Really love this song ever since I heard the original The Last Saskatchewan on my dad's college mixtapes and it brings a smile to my face to hear you guys covering it. Funny thing is, now that I'm in college, hearing this feel like I'm going through the same things he did.
Congrats, you guys just made me realize I'm turning into my father.
All of us do sooner or later.
@@davesstillhere Or we turn into our mothers, like I did.
The first time I heard this song I was laughing my head off, and now it brings a smile every time I hear it.
I also made a short parody of this song back in April when it snowed unexpectedly and left three inches on the ground. I wasn't happy about it.
How are you not happy about snow?
@@endertobias1908 Well it's only 3 inches. And it's April.
This'll be great. Also cool to hear that they drew inspiration from the music video for 'in hell I'll be in good company'
I like the people in the background looking and smiling.
This is really cool! The editing is really good as well!
I love the Arrogant Worms original, but you guys have made it your own. Definitely adequate.
The Captain Tractor version will always be my definitive favorite.
@@TheRealSkeletor anybodys but captain tractors isn’t considered
@@carterwebster5866 Alestorm did a cover recently, so that may be a valid challenger.
The second I saw the 4-man line-up and the zoom partway into the video, I had the feeling it was inspired by The Dead South. Absolutely love that song in it's entirety, and glad to see that this despription does infact mention it as having inspired the video.
This is such an homage to The Arrogant Worms - from Kingston, ON - and Saskatchewan particularly: Regina is the capital and the place where TLSP is on “Regina’s Mighty Shores” - but not on the “River Sask.”BUT Wascana Lake and Wascana Creek, in fact! That’s a tongue-in-cheek geographical error. Also, Regina is the home of The Dead South, whose video of In Hell, I’ll Be in Good Company (parts of it filmed in rural SK!) was the model for style and video cuts by the Long Johns of their video! Well done! This Bristol version is still as hilarious as the original! Keep going, Long Johns! From Chris in Saskatoon, where the South Saskatchewan River actually flows, har-har!
And closing credits inspired by the Monkees. Couldn't ask for better, and I've been hoping for a video for this song forever. ADEQUATE!
I am crying at that bit with the farmer on the tractor 😂😂😂😂 Good job as always lads!
I never tire of hearing you gentlemen pay tribute to Canada's entries in the folk/a capella canon. Cheers.
Being form Saskatchewan and a life long Worms fan, you did this song proud. Well done guys.
As someone from Saskatchewan, this is so fucking surreal, like gazing into a parallel universe
Being from Saskatchewan…. This is an amazing cover!!!!!!!!
As a fan of the Worms, I've got to say this is great stuff. The essence of good folk music usually includes adaptability and humour, and this is an excellent example of both. It's also funny in that one unique (?) aspect of Canadian folk music is the song of regret--the "What the hell am I doing here?" sort of song. To see this translated back to England is a heap of subtly ironic fun.
Being so familiar with the original lyrics, it feels weird getting into it and then getting jarred out with the place name changed lmao. This is fantastic though, such fun!
I heard this version first, way back, being from UK. Then heard the original and was syked out 🤣
Love the scenes with tractor Jack
it's dumb slapstick
what's not to love
My two year old loves this song. He tries to get me to sing it and prompts words I forgot.
Hello and thank you from Kingston Ontario Canada, home of the Arrogant Worms
A Dead South influenced Longest Johns music video! This is the greatest crossover episode ever!
Perhaps they should charter a blockade runner to sneak them out of lockdown island and come across the drink to do a collab. That'd make for some seriously interesting music.
Having heard both the Arrogrant Worms and Captain Tractor perform the original... I have to say this is a worthy addition and modification!
It's amazing that someone from a different continent is covering The Arrogant Worms!
Perfectly describes why we grind out Sea of Thieves and listen to these guys. It’s the greatest escape.
i love that one of my favorite musical groups is paying homage to the unique style of one of my other favorite music groups
I have listened to this song SO MUCH and I couldnt be happier it finally got a music video!!!!!! Thank you for starting our 2022 with such a gift!!!!!!
Arrogant worms... the cover I didn't know I needed in my life
Being a poor Yankee, I'd never heard of Arrogant Worms. You compel me to pay closer attention to my neighbors, which could be an adequate result of your hard work, musicianship & silliness!
BADASS TUNES, BADASS DUDES. THEIR MUSIC IS SO ENJOYABLE. I NEVER THOUGHT FOLK MUSIC COULD BE BADASS, BUT THEY'RE PRETTY CONVINCING.
This must've been a quite a feat to edit and do the match-cuts so smoothly! Adequate indeed!
My three year old grandson is watching this on endless loop this morning. He tries to do the leg pats and fist raises at the right time. And he loves the end.
Prairie dwelling Canadian here. I love this song and listened to the Arrogant Worms a lot growing up.
Great Cover!
YOOOOOO THEY MADE A MUSIC VIDEOOOO POGGGGG
Your voices and energy never fail to make my day, but OMG your videographer and editor deserve a lifetime supply of hay, incredible feat with this video!!!
Thanks guys that was great...my Dad was a in the NAVY as a young man , then became a Policeman and when he retired a Farmer... Sort of reverse order of your cop in your song... Loved it thanks for the LAUGH TOO!
Good heavens, when I imagine all the times you had to film yourselves singing that song in one location, then packing up, going elsewhere, setting up and doing it again… how many different locales are here, it’s insane! I recognize your hard work, sirs!
YAAAAARRRRRRRRRRR!!!!
Ah little "Ya Har!! Me lads!" from a pirate on the ol'North Saskatchewan
Oh, I used to be a farmer, and I made a living fine
I had a little stretch of land along the Western Line
But times were hard, and though I tried, the money wasn't there
And bankers came and took my land, and told me "Fair is fair"
I looked for every kind of job, the answer always "no",
"Hire now?" they'd always laugh, "we just let twenty go!"
The government, they promised me a measly little sum
But I've got too much pride to end up just another bum
And I said, "Who gives a damn if all the jobs are gone?
I'm going to be a pirate on the river Severn!"
Yarr!
And it's a heave! (Ho!)
Hi! (Ho!)
Comin' down the plains! (woop!)
Stealing wheat and barley and all the other grains
And it's a ho! (Hey!)
Hi! (Hey!)
Farmers bar your doors
When you see the Jolly Roger on the Severn's mighty shores!
You'd think the other farmers would know that I'm at large
But just the other day I saw an unsuspecting barge
I snuck up right behind them, and they were none the wiser
I rammed their boat and sank it and I stole the fertilizer!
The bridge outside of Redwick spans a mighty river
Farmers cross in so much fear, their stomachs are a-quiver
'Cause they know that Tractor Jack is hiding in the bay (Ha ha ha harr!)
I'll jump the bridge and knock 'em cold and sail off with their hay...
(chorus)
Well, Officer Robby chased me, he was always at my throat
But he followed on the shoreline, 'cause he didn't own a boat
But cutbacks were a-coming, and the copper lost his job
And now he sails with us, and we call him Salty Rob (Ha-harr!)
A swingin' sword, a skull and bones, unpleasant company!
I never pay my income tax, and screw the VAT! (Screw it!)
Sailing out past Thornbury, the terror of the seas
If you want to get to Tesco, boys, you gotta get by me!
(chorus)
Well, pirate life's appealing, but you don't just find it here
I hear that up in Yorkshire there's a band of buccaneers
They roam around the Yorkshire dales from Smith to Beverly
And you're bound to lose your flat cap if you have to pass their way
Winter is a-comin, and a chill is in the b-reeze
My pirate days are over if the rivers start to freeze
Well, I'll be back in springtime, but now I've got to fly
I hear there's lots of plundering down in the Isle of Wight!
(chorus x2)
When you see the Jolly Roger on the Severn's mighty shores (Heyyy!)
Can we appreciate the sailboat going by right on the line "Sail of with their haaaaaay"?
Welcome to The Longest Johns' Grand Tour of Bristol
this has inspired me to become a criminal. it seems nothing can stop me so long as i stay in the middle of a river
Cheers to the new year guys! Absolutely love listening to these songs with my dad, he enjoys them as much as me if not more lol. Can't wait for Smoke and Oakum!
The Harmonic Four bringing more melody and merriment from shore to shore 🐳🐟🌊🎶
AMAZING
Having never been to Bristol, you lot make me want to come to visit, so well done
I love looking at the bystanders and seeing whether any have a reaction to them singing in the middle of nowhere hahaha
I love Dave's shirt and Robbie's hair!
Love seeing all the Bristol locations lads! Hope to be the ones mugging in the background some day x
the pan/cut at 1:40 made me gasp. made me think of fred gabourie and buster keaton in sherlock,jr.; they would approve of the technical wizardry. 100/10 excellent video
i come from pill live in australia now love this song
My favourite part is the sections on the boat, where they had to get Dave to awkwardly slot his leg in between the bench.
One of my favorite songs redone by one of my favorite groups.
The tractor chase at the end was hilarious!
Been waiting for this one a LONG time 🤣🤣🤣
You guys are seriously the best! I've been listening/watching you guys since the beginning of covid and it's honestly kept me sane. Keep pushing forward mates!
Arr! There goes Tractor Jack!
Welp, i just found the backstory of my next DND character
What a delightful shanty!
As someone born and raised in Saskatchewan, i love this cover
One of my faves 🥰
I love the edits of the video!
This was one of the first songs of yours I head, and brought me great amusement (and company in the car) for much of summer 2020 onwards!
That is some excellent editing. I was certain this had to be a greenscreen because the transition between different locations was so smooth.
Great as ever. I was half expecting you all to jump into the water at the end of the song!
Alternate title: 4 men stand in various places in Bristol while ocationally slapping their legs
In all seriousness amazing video, the filmography and continuity of the whole thing was really well done, good on ya
So excited...

Hey
God I love your stuff guys.
The editing on this is phenomenal, especially when y'all do more involved actions that span multiple shots. Mad props to the videographer here! Singing is good too, I guess.
Love these guy!
Got to be my favorite TLJ song :)
Yessss!
Well done lads. You need to come visit Saskatchewan some time soon.
I'm glad I met you before you guys buy a boat and go full pirate. Good sailing from Colombia!
Love the song, especially the very end, makes me wonder if Andy is on the banjo or it's just a prerecorded sound.
I'm pretty confident I've heard that banjo lick somewhere else on CZcams. I think it's a royalty free track.
Yeah that's what I thought, just making sure
Great cover and I'm so glad you replaced GST with VAT! (Plus many other awesome switches) :D :D :D
Between this and your Stan Rogers work, seems like you're getting ready to do an all-Canadian-covers album!
I love all the scenes of Bristol!
Love that some of the shots are at the courtyard outside yogtowers! Great video for a great song!
Expertly made as always!!
Shanty away lads!
Adequate love it
what a toe tapping pleasure of video guys!!
Wow, so much Stan Rogers and now the Arrogant Worms/Captain Tractor! Are we going to have to give you honorary Canadian citizenship? Cheers, and keep 'em coming!
Brilliant! Yarr!
History tends to forget the scourge of England's grain pirates.
I wish i could like it every time i watch it. Loved the song already but this video is just great!
Can’t wait
This is a good way to find out how many of your fans are Canadian, we can’t shut up about at any hint of this song 😁
Amazing! I met guy who was wearing one of your hoodies in Aberystwyth, and I'm glad I found you :)
Nice placing and videography
Mad respect for you lads.
Aight this slaps. It slaps hard
I'm here from a pirate from Saskatchewan.
