- My Classic Mini Rolling Road Tuning Session
Originally i had this session booked for the 1st of April but due to Covid-19 i panicked and cancelled, A.B Garage then had another 3 month waiting list to get in, but it was worth the wait 100% Ade (owner/mechanic) is so knowledgeable and takes the time to show and explain everything to you.
going in with the wrong needle. i chugged my way to the garage running poorly with an AAE needle as supplied with the reconditioned Carb i got from Gareth over at 'That Green Mini' the mixture was far too lean, Ade checked over the fueling and timing and then gave it a run, finding out that the needle was wrong he swapped it out for an AAA needle and then went again giving far better results. it's looking like the top end will need to be overhauled again but this time using new springs will be due in the near future.
Garage details:

Hey Everybody, i hope you enjoy this video. it's been a long time coming and i'm pleased to say that My little mini Rusty is now running like a dream.
Looking forward to this 😎👍🏻
@@DanAnconaGT thanks mate, hope you enjoyed it
Can you feel the extra horse power as you drive ? Rgds Don
@@doncodman913 hey don, hard to tell as on the drive home it was mostly traffic!
Oh I just remembered... when I had my first car an 850 mini ... I timed how long to get to 60mph . I recall it was 24 seconds.
It's all relative to it being a 998. 33bhp at the rollers is probably close to 50bhp at the flywheel. And it's also down to power band. I used to hillclimb and gearchanged at 8,000rpm on an Isuzu Gemini prepared by the Australian Holden "Country Dealer Team (CDT)". When you have that sort of set up you've got uprated valve springs, cam, enlarged valves, tuned headers, dump pipe exhaust, electric fans, and a big Weber. But getting back to your neat little road car, it's set up for a 3,000 to 4,750 sort of power band. You were right to expect that you'd never get big numbers from little engines at commuter revs. That said, I would love to have that Clubman in my garage!
Thanks very much, its a great little car, some upgrades would be beneficial bit for pottering about and going on runs etc it does me great. The gemini sounds like a bit of an animal!
Good to see the whole tuning process, it was nice that the mechanic let you film it all.
Yeah he is a top guy, explained everything In detail and was really considerate with the car too. I've seen some people pay no attention and crash and bang around the car while working on it
What a great video William, it was good to see how it's done, 👍👍
Thanks Tony, I was really pleased with the results. And ade told the time to explain to me what and why he did certain things
Thank you William! I've always wanted to watch this done. We have the same car, but they couldn't be more different. Mine's sound but it had a hard life and looks like it.
Its amazing what a few tweaks can sort. I would recommend 100% you could do alot yourself but it's the needle that I struggle to sort on the drive
Nice one, I'll be going there when mine's back together 👍
Can't recommend him enough
Great video will really enjoyed that. Can't believe how low it was at the start lol
Madness, but thanks mate
Well done William a great result for the mini
Thanks william, yes a great result I just need to get out and enjoy the car now
I keep telling myself that I must get the escort out for a run but never get around to it one day maybe
@@billywhizz98 what escort do you have?
Good to see it set up, car’s looking good👍
Thank you very much james:)
Amazing the difference in bhp with it tuned and proper needle👍
@@jamesbarrie2965 sure is pal, I've never had a car tuned before always winged it. But thought now is the time to get done properly
Ade is a genius at get cars setup
That he is, i would you him on all sorts of vehicles not just minis
Yay, back on Rusty 👍
yes sir-ie i sure am. i missed this car!
Well done matey glad it a running a lot better pretty sure that’s the same bhp as the bug lol
Yeah it's crazy to think that,
Great video. Just the ground music.
thanks very much, its really hard to balance the content, if I didn't have any music, the fan noise would make people complain also, I try to make the videos fun and lighthearted. but it's not to everybody's taste, which is a shame as I try hard to make content that everybody will enjoy.
Great video 👍
Thank you very much
William Murfitt as I said I’ve shared it with my dad lol
@@LoveSundays awesome cheers pal
What are the emissions figures as they are in good indicator of tuning
Nice work! It's always quietly pleasing when you get the timing spot on by feel!
I recently just rebuilt the twin carbs in my 1275 and installed an electric distributor.
I adjusted by feel and it runs better than before but I need to find somewhere that has a rolling road and knows minis (I'm in South Australia). I want to see how close I am!
thats awesome! do you have a timing light? it would be pretty easy to find out how far out it is or if correct. i'd love you hear how you get on.
@@WilliamMurfitt I actually bought a timing light last week.
I was only 2° off! How's that for going by ear?!
@@captainbeetroot1017 well done mate very pleasing result
@@captainbeetroot1017 2 off from what?
I'd have been looking at the air filter for both issues.
Are you not a fan of this style of filter?
Operator seemed to know what he was doing but the workshop was a mess!
I bet he know EXACTLY where everything is.
Organised chaos we call that. Ade is an extremely knowledgeable guy and his reputation speaks for itself, he has a 3 months waiting list just to get in.
@@grahamjohn331 makes my garage look tidy though
William, are you still happy with the job you had done at this garage?
Over the moon, vehicle starts first time everytime, idles great and also performs well
@@WilliamMurfitt Do you remember what the guy said as to to what he thought the engine was like, cam shaft big ends, that sort of thing? p.s. how many miles has it done now. I'm on 85k and it's a bit slugish
Great results 👍 anyone know a bloke like this in the east of England? Cambridgeshire/Suffolk way?
Not 100% maybe put the feelers out on social media or have a drive out to wales is a lovely place and we dont bite 🤣
@@WilliamMurfitt could do once it's ready, quite the drive for the 25 that's only done 30 miles in the last 10 years!
I know a very good rolling road mechanic in North Essex if that's any good? Area is Sible Hedingham.
@@DavidUKesb could be, got any contact details?
That's brilliant. Did you notice any difference in fuel consumption?
As it stands at the moment no, the drive home I was stuck mostly in traffic and I've not had the chance to get back out again yet. Life for me is 100mph all day everyday... I'm hoping things will settle soon and I can enjoy the finer things like taking my mini for a spin
Music is too loud can’t understand what’s being said.
The music is to cover the fan noise anything of importance has been written on the screen to help you follow
Still annoying.
@@chuckm5874 unfortunately I cant please everybody, I'm not a professional I do this for fun and share my videos for peoples enjoyment. I'm sorry you weren't a fan of this video maybe check out another hopefully I did a better job
Unless you particularly want to spend a lot of money tuning a 998 you'd be far better off dropping a 1275 unit in as a fairly cheap upgrade with a heap more torque
The tuning here was for better running and usability. 1275 engine are fetching crazy money these days and for the amount I use the car it's not worth it. Last year I drove around 500 miles and I did nothing for the 3 years before that. I've done about 40 miles this year
Yup in terms of performance a 998 & 1275 are no friends
@@mexicossie1592 1098 engine is good for a road car. In the early days my 1962 Mini with 1098, 12G295 head, 1 1/2" SU, 3.44 Diff would easily top 100 MPH. I still have the car.
