- Come with me as I attend the first preview of the brand new musical The Notebook! The show is currently playing at The Chicago Shakespeare Theatre located on Navy Pier.
The Notebook is a musical with music and lyrics by Ingrid Michaelson and a book by Bekah Brunstetter. The musical is based on the 1996 novel of the same name, written by Nicholas Sparks and was originally presented by the New York Stage and Film at the Powerhouse Theater at Vassar College in June 2019.
The lead characters Allie and Noah will be portrayed by Jordan Tyson as Young Allie, Joy Woods as Middle Allie, and Tony winner Maryann Plunkett as Older Allie, along with John Cardoza as Young Noah, Ryan Vasquez as Middle Noah, and John Beasley as Older Noah.
The musical also includes Yassmin Alers, Andréa Burns, Jonathan Butler-Duplessis, Dorcas Leung, Omar Lopez-Cepero, Sophie Madorsky, and Liam Oh. Alex Benoit, Mary Ernster, Jerica Exum, Jerome Harmann-Hardeman, RhonniRose Mantilla, and Carson Stewart are featured as understudies of the production.
I literally just got home from seeing it. And yes, I ugly cried. I completely agree with everything you said, and listening to your enthusiasm about it, brought all the feels. ❤
Yay! So glad you enjoyed!
I completely agree with you! I sat in the row behind you and to the left last night (recognized the shirt :D ). What an amazing production! As far as the rain clean-up, I thought that they could have gone back to the care facility and made it a janitorial crew to clean up the water? Maybe a scene where Noah or Allie wander the halls? As you said, the entire cast was amazing and I was blown away by the composition and orchestrations. I also thought that the mother didn't need that brief musical number, but that just might be that I dislike that character overall. Thanks for your review!
Thanks for sharing Aaron!
Really cool that they actually fix the problem you discuss with removing the water. I saw it last night, it closes today. They have the PT therapist come out to the very front of the stage and a strong spotlight and start reading the notebook and musing about their life. I was in the lower gallery first row. Could hear the removal, could see a little bit of movement but not distracting. Ingrid Michaelson can make one cry at a concert. I knew the Notebook would be a huge tearjerker with her music. I had a purse full of Kleenex. I was also impressed how she kicked Stephen Sondheim off the stage but with respect. There were a few songs I bobbed my head and tapped my foot like I was at a concert. Of course I already know all the words to If This is Love. I can’t wait for Ingrid Michaelson to win a Tony. I knew she was going to do something on Broadway when Lin-Manuel told her one of his very favorite songs was a really obscure one of hers called, Corner of Your Heart. Sigh….
Thanks for sharing!
I saw it Thursday night partially based on this review and I ugly cried. It was so beautiful. So moving. Just gorgeous music. I’m aching for a cast album. It’s such an intimate show. I want it to go on to NYC and become a huge hit and win all the awards.
I so hope this show goes to Broadway!
I have watched every single video on this production, and I am absolutely obsessed!! It better see a Broadway transfer!! Also, the fact that the characters don't stick to just one race is so amazing! It's such a gorgeous production and I would die to see it - it just looks SOOO good!! I love the idea of three versions of the characters, such a smart choice!
Amen
So what you’re saying is the opposite of the Devil Wears Prada musical
Exactly!
This show is GREAT!! I SHOOK I LITERALLY SHOOK. AT THE END. AND I JUMPED TO MY FEET AT THE END STANDING OVATION. I HONESTLY DID NOT EXPECT MUCH FOR THE SCORE!! HOLY CRAP... IT IS INSANELY AMAZING!!! GO SEE IT!! THEY JUST EXTENDED IT TILL OCT 30
I went to one of the final shows and sobbed!
I am not sure, but I believe the changed the rain scene. I saw last night, and the PT is reading from the note book downstage and talking about it. Yoy can still hear them, but and I was In the second row so yoy could still see them but the stage was dark. Im not sure if thats the same or different from when yoy saw it.
You are correct! I saw it before it closed and they did a better job of hiding the water cleaning!
Glad you enjoyed it! It’s really something special, huh? ☺️
It really is!
I am so happy you are back man I was wondering when are you going to get into the Destiny's Child/ Beyonce And Kelly Rowland Catalog and I won't forget Michelle Williams who was the first destiny's child member to release a solo album as a gospel singer
One day!
Just saw it over the weekend. LOVED IT!!
YAY!
Just saw it tonight - absolutely FABULOUS! Sounds like they changed the clean up portion. It now is a single spotlight on the PT (fin) reading the book and making some jokes about the content he’s reading (sex!) and I thought it worked fairly well. A little distracting with the sweeping but you couldn’t see them as much as it sounds like you did.
I want to see it again and again and again! Need a cast recording! Ingrid does fantastic work, knew it would be great lyrically.
I went to one of the last weeks and yes this did fix this transition in the way you described. It worked so much better!
No comment on the interracial cast? How did that work?
Just saw it last night, very well imo! The story and staging could work with any number of people of any race. There are so many parallels drawn that make all the versions of characters connected
It's interesting you bring that up. When the cast was first announced I thought it would be a weird choice. However, the actors feel so connected to each other that you don't even notice!
I think it was a great device for the narrative. Memory of ourselves change and sometimes we are even different people in points of our lives. The only thing that stayed the same was their love. Plus it made for beautiful harmonizations
cant wait. I am seeing it Sunday!!! woohoo!!
Hope you liked it!
I love this! I really hope this makes it to Broadway. I love the movie and the book. It’s one of my favorite romances of all time. I loved your review.
Thanks for watching Nikki!
Your welcome.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
The ending of them dying in bed Noah has lung cancer and Allie has Dementia.
Still how convenient that they die at the exact same time! HAHAHA
