Microsoft in the mid-2000s just couldn't get things right. While Xbox 360 was doing well, Windows Vista was a spectacular disaster and the launch of the iPhone and Google Android ultimately pushed Microsoft and the Windows Phone operating system out of the market. But a few years before that there was Zune: a portable MP3 player brave enough to take on the iPod. Did it work? Clearly not... Why, however, was Microsoft's music player such a failure and why did it cost them over a billion dollars in losses? - Věda a technologie

Same. Had a Zune 30 and it was built like a fucking brick. I dropped it so many times without ever having any problems and later upgraded to a gen 2 120 for more space. Thing's still built like a brick and running 12 years later without any issues.
I still have and use my Zune HD. I love it and still think the Zune Windows software is the best music player to this day.
@@YoungvLondon There we have the problem: Most people are adults enough to care for their shit and not drop them constantly. In conclusion: They do NOT want bricks but devices that have a proper design. And MS doing everything better? Woot? The crapload they delivered with the failure-from-the-beginning Windows phone? First gen Surface and Surface Pro? Get out of here!
Credit where credit is due: That Zune HD was indeed very slick. And ahead of it's time, especially with that amazing DAC it had. I wish I had bought one back in the day.

Zune HD had the best hardware of any pocket device when it was released, but it failed miserably with content. It didn't even have 10% as many games as the iPod Touch. Content is king.
Major correction: music bought on the iTunes music store could be played on more than just the iPod. You could (and I did a lot!) burn them to CD and play them in any CD player. I don’t understand why this option was completely forgotten about. It was a very common thing to do at the time.
Fun fact, the first consumer OLED product was the Sony Clie VZ-90 released in 2004. It was a handheld palm pilot device with email, web, and music/video player.

I stuck with my crappy Lumia phone until like late 2018. By then the apps had started to disappear but the UI was simply a saving grace in the shitshow that was Windows Phone. Actually the reason the It was called the Zune "HD" (in addition to the radio) was that it could output HD video (720p) to your TV, with a separately purchased dock

Funny. I had a windows phone aswell and was actually quite happy with it. I just eventually had to switch away, because app support was terrible.
Had a ZuneHD and honestly it was a fantastic product. UI is still gorgeous IMO. The subscription service was such good value with the possibility to own ten songs per month! I just remember the battery life being pretty bad which got old really quick.
Later Zune models even had a radio feature that would read the RDS data from FM stations and would provide links to purchase songs you hear on the radio... granted if your favorite station has RDS data in their signal. Not every station has RDS, especially smaller independent community stations or in rural areas. As for HD Radio, it could make FM radio more appealing to many if stations dropped analog signals completely. That would greatly increase digital bandwidth and in turn, audio quality.

I wrote about the Zune HD in a college paper and I mentioned how the marketing was poor for the product as well. The simple Ads and graphics from Apple were so iconic. Microsoft Ads were not catching people's attention.
MS consumer product marketing at that time was always atrocious and confusing, from advertising to packaging.
Yet they had one stellar success, the XBox. At the time nobody thought they could pull it off vs Sony, but look where it is today. What was different about the development and marketing of XBox? Two things I can think of right off the bat was that 1) MS spread a lot of money around among game developers to make sure Xbox had sufficient titles at launch (including their outright purchase of Mac game developer Bungie, giving them an exclusive on Halo), and 2) Xbox was basically walled off from the company, allowing it to do its own thing (much like how the Mac was initially developed at Apple).
It was ahead of its time. It had a mid 2010s aesthetic already.
The zuneHD was where I first fell in love with new release Tuesdays. Staying up till midnight to download the new releases.
Wow, I never knew that the Metro interface was that old. I had a Windows phone like just 2 years ago (bought it in 2016, I know I know, too late), and at the time when I bought it it was still on Windows 8.1 Mobile, which had the exact same aesthetic to it as the Zune HD.
It got upgraded to Win10 Mobile at some point, but conveniently you could roll-back to 8.1 whenever you pleased by doing a factory reset. And I did it when I gave the phone to my father to make it more simple (he never had a smartphone prior to that one so I didn't want to overwhelm him). And yes, that's a very pleasant and uncluttered interface. Shame that Windows Phones never took off.
ZuneHD one of the first oled devices but noone gave a shit back then. Its sad how early Microsoft was on so many things but got shafted in the end.
Microsoft's problem is the way they market their consumer products. They seem to lead with their name despite the largely negative view of the company. The only equipment success I can think of is the Xbox, where it was created as its own brand.
@@michaelpain Apparently, consumer sentiment has shifted in Microsoft's favour these past few years.

Never heard of Zune pass until now. Amazing. MS was ahead of its time I guess. It’s all about timing and market perception of any good idea. Nice video SnazzyLabs. Make more stuff like this.
Miyuru Weerarathna i remember having a white zune 30, brown zune 30, and the halo 3 zune. i had the zune pass and everyone thought i was an idiot for paying to rent music.
It was a pretty sweet deal while it lasted. They eventually rolled it into the "Xbox Music Pass" and later, Groove. We who had the original Pass were grandfathered in with the "10 free mp3s a month" deal for several years, but eventually they forced everyone into the $10-for-only-streaming" deal with Groove. I wasn't interested in streaming (for practical reasons), so I ended my subscription then. Just a few months later, Groove was killed off as a subscription service, with MS promoting Spotify in its stead.
Microsoft has always been ahead of its time with a lot of stuff. It's just the hardware wasn't there yet, it was too nerdy/geeky that only the technophiles wanted it, or they always tried to make things just not perfect enough so they weren't in direct competition with their 3rd party vendors.
Too many people just turn the other way when they hear the name Microsoft and they really miss out on some great stuff.

Product development at Microsoft obviously didn't do enough research prior to naming their product. 😂
Ok Doug but when are you getting to all the quirks and features? And does it have a bezel to bezel warranty?
5:31.....the AVGN voice in my head going "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!!!!"
Lmao
5:34 lmao
I think the avgn fans and zune owners have a pretty big crossover.
I miss the days when I only had a few albums on my iPod nano and that's all I have to enjoy. Somehow it made me appreciate music more...
Sort of like my "collection" of 8 cassette tapes :)
Agreed! You really got to know your music.
I don't miss it. I got to know so many good artists through recommendations. Also copying the songs with itunes was a pain in the ass. It was such a bad software.
@@BixbyConsequence I had a 24-CD book that I carried everywhere.
That squirt thing makes me remember when the bump app existed on iOS. It was so dope to be able to share files like that!
I had the brown/green one and loved it SO much.. More than my iPod.
"Squirt"
Me: "Please stop."
I love how Steve Jobs is proudly showing off the dimensions when, by today's standards, it's ridiculously large.
okay. Stop drooling on your dad's keyboard. He needs it for work.
@@edwinlee2343 Whatever you say Boomer.
At the time its competitor was the Creative Nomad. That thing was a chonky beast.
The size was one of the things I liked about the original iPods. It was just the right size for my hand. Many later players were too small to fit comfortably in my hand.
That thing had an actual spinning platter hard drive in it because that was cheaper than flash memory.
The problem with Zune was incorrect for the swedish market.
In 2006, MP3 players for PC was available at 50$.
Filesharing for music started dying in 2007.
Cellphones that were smartphones in its day (Samsung F480, D900, Ericsson P800, Nokia N95, Blackberry, early Motorola 3G phones etc.) long before android/iphone - could play both mp3 and movies in 2007.
And also, Spotify was free Beta in that time aswell in Sweden and some other countries..
I have 2 zunes first gens neither have good batteries, and an HD, also bad battery and the software error, are you able to repair these? I loved my zunes
Ah fudge! Now i want a Zune HD!
Right on, Arsh DSJ... they're definitely awesome.
I had a Cowon DAP at the time and it sounded heaps better! That’s what got me into audio. Who cares about apps?
15:03 “bettery battery life”
16:53 “nost motably”
😂
Nost motorboatly🤣

He also says "sodder" every time he tries to say "solder" - but apparently that's normal 🤷
my zune player doesnt work...the power wont charge..
when i plug in the usb cable it wont go inside?
i think that part is broken? that why i cant stop using it?
i even open up the zune player?
bought new batteries it worked..
problem with my zune is the charger is broken?
how can i. fix that problem?
Good video. I always wondered why Zune never worked. I liked it. Shows that marketing is everything. Thank you!
Basically the Zune Hd is the Ipod touch of Windows Phone.
P.D: You look like Starlord with that Zune.
Oh the interface on Zune hd was so fresh, it's still fresh!
I still have my zune flash, loved that little mp3 player!
I remember getting the Zune HD for christmas (after begging for one as a 13ish year old). I had a few friends who were pretty amazed at how it looked compared to the iPods of the day. I still have it in the box I think and this video makes me want to give it a revisit
Zune should re release as a high end mp3 player with a Hi-fi Quad DAC.
The lgV line already exists.
@@RandyAugustus LgV has gone stagnant in features and other features has gone downhill. For example now the display is worst than ever before. The battery it's bigger and the camera it's a little better. But there's no real innovation anymore.
@@Kevil911 In fact the LG V line has gone so stagnant, I felt no need to go from my LG V20. Its just got more features compared to the V30+
It’s just not going to sell. Stand alone music players are a thing of the past as everyone just uses their phone. Even now, buying music is almost a thing of the past as people move to just streaming music.
Back in the day, I had a Reo which didn’t hold all that much.
Kevin Medina or maybe sell a Zune-branded DAC for phones without a headphone jack.
The Zune never failed in my heart 🥺
My zune would lose everything after a yr or 2 after I got it. I would load all my songs again and then a few days later everything disappeared
Tommy Maroney you may have a faulty hard drive as I have not seen that issue at least with mine. You could take it to a repair shop near you who can replace it with another drive
@@megarockman99 thanks it's cool. I got in a box somewhere but I use my phone now so I dont care anymore hah. It was still the coolest device because my I actually did share songs with my friends at school. Squirt
The Zune didn't fail, Microsoft did. between the bad timing and little marketing it got, not enough people knew it existed or outright ridiculed it because of the aforementioned issues.
Loved my zune player. Only downside its screen randomly stopped working.
One question, can you stream CZcams videos to the Zune HD
