    The beauty is in the simplicity...far too easy to get mired down these days listening to the "experts" telling you you need this, that and the other to be a real modeler. Marching to your own drum is the best way to enjoy the hobby.

      Wow. My cave is 16x10 and my problem I see now is that I've tried to use all the available space eg 10x10. I can see I should start small say 10x3 and build on if need be. I've never finished and I've been at it on and off for about six years! I've spent £££ trying to get there. I'm not a modeller or DIYer. I've tried this plan and that plan and never finished anything.
      This gives me new hope. Thank you

    Interesting that you have gone for Piko. I started buying their products over 50 years ago when I was working in Czechoslovakia, more by accident than intent. There was, at that time, almost nothing of value in their shops, being just after the Russian takeover. As I was given expenses at western levels in local currency it was difficult to spend it. There is only so much Czech beer that can be drunk! Anyway, a search of the shops revealed a Piko stockist and I bought a load of locos and rolling stock each time I returned. This was all with a view to my retirement.
    The stock is still very good quality and detail even by the standard of today. About 3 years ago, I visited the still active Piko factory in the old East Germany. Not everything was still being made on site and they have diversified into G scale.
    I'm still working on the layout, having been too busy as carer for my late wife but even now 81 I still am determined to carry on to get it up and running.

    I love how you promote this 'whatever floats you boat' approach to the hobby, ever since I dropped the obsessive, perfectionist approach I have become more laid-back and enjoyed myself more. In the past I went over-the-top on buying buildings, rolling stock and locos that were uniform to a particular region/company and an era, but it came at great expense and all the money that I wasted could've been invested in other things I would need more. I run LBSC Terrier locos with LNWR 6-wheel coaches and BR Blue diesels with private owner coal wagons, and you know what, I couldn't care less what anybody else thinks about my layout and train formations.
    I am astounded at the pricing of today's brand new models, £100+ for a locomotive, £35 for a wagon, £60 a coach the list goes on. No wonder so many people who would love to get into the hobby become put off. I don't understand any logic from Hornby believing that charging £500 for a train pack should cost more than a 7-night self-catering holiday in Spain.

    • @BudgetModelRailways
      @BudgetModelRailways  Před 2 lety

      Thanks. What annoys me is that Piko can produce an excellent basic bo bo diesel for £60 with wagons at £13 yet Hornby need £100-200 for a loco and £20+ for a wagon. Sadly Piko is German HO so of little interest in the UK. Prices and the drive for perfection are ruining the hobby, like you say it should be about fun

    Your ingenuosity is always astonishing gentleman. About HO, I repeat myself here but, if I had not bought dozens of OO models already, I would have discard the idea of buying UK trains due to the poor overall price/quality of UK trains models and buy a narrow but good selection of HO models instead (yes, I've done both by now...). I had started a decade ago with UK models because they were overall cheaper than continental models, and I understand now at which price it is... As you said, you have continental manufacturers that are realistic towards what their customers can spend for the hobby.

    8’ x 4” all I can say is they haven’t watched budget model railways ? I’ve just watched a guy not from the Uk who thinks you must have a minimum of 3 separate levels so to have 3 lots of separate track and 3 locomotives running on them at the same time , In my opinion this is simply a lot more work and expense and who wants that because I certainly don’t ( As Mike has said many times keep it simple it’s a hobby to be enjoyed and he’s right 👍

      I just can’t understand this obsession that to enjoy the hobby we must have a minimum of 3 tracks , and have the very latest locomotives which all must be dcc with perfect detail ,
      Why anyone would want to pay £200 for a locomotive just because it has lovely detail and makes a noise is completely beyond me 🤷🏼‍♂️ but let’s be honest as long as folk keep paying these prices then greedy companies such as Hornby and Bachman will keep charging it !!!
      The type of layouts that we are seeing on you tube will certainly not have been done on a budget, and how many people in the Uk with the cost of living being the way it is can honestly afford such a layout or have the room in which to do it 🤔
      Beginners such as myself will watch these videos and think no way can I afford this hobby I don’t have the room or the money so they think forget it 🤔. ( and I would be one of them ) Thankfully we have budget model railways who show it can be done and Mike has always produce really nice affordable layouts that any beginner can enjoy building and this is why I watch every video they do because they are the only channel who want to encourage beginners not drive them away 🤨. Did you count the starter sets or the Piko shop offerings for the Hobby range?
    My count is the following (for the Hobby range, excluding the expensive ones that probably don't belong there)
    3 steamers in various color schemes. A 0-4-0 tank engine, a 0-4-0 with tender and a 0-8-0 which is DCC ready and has a very good tender drive motor
    3 diesels (218, DieselTraxx and OBB Hercules)
    4 electrics (Taurus, 185, 189 and 101)
    The rubber drive diesels are from an even lower price range (MyTrain)
    What you did forgot to tell is that Piko does fit proper NEM shafts with close coupling capabilities on all the freight and passenger cars in the Hobby range. Only the MyTrain stuff has the old stamped sheetmetal couplings.
    Another good deal in HO scale are the Roco sets with 8 freight cars, these end up being about 10 euro per car at the current price point.

    I agree with your assessment of the value in buying HO second hand gear. I've got a Inglenook board made with the usual code 100 HO Peco track, with bargain price Flieshmann locos, sorting pre-owned OO wagons. via a shunters match wagon. I'm prepared to swop couplings, to run what I want on my bit of preservation railway.
    The LNER before the end of steam would be my dream layout, but available space, budget and but collecting Preloved items, from different countries, why not build a 'museum' layout, working a random selection of vehicles brought together. A further wild idea was to assume it is a museum of Romney Hyde and Dymchurch scale vehicles in a Minifig world - and use Lego to create the buildings, Lego people to decorate the spaces. There is boxes of Lego in our loft, I've got the rolling stock. I've retired recently, and a 3 by 2 metre room inside is a potential railway room. Your full lap circuit is the first feature I hope to make, later connecting to a separate U shaped layout. All DC of course. The terminal sections I plan to build as modules to enable swopping the trackwork. A Station to an industrial scene or a fiddle yard, That's for later. If you have the space and the models... the Big Boy 4014 can stand alongside Flying Scotsman, with its double tender and coaches, there are moving pictures to prove it!!! Keep up the good work.

      I use a mix, steel is fine but does take a bit more cleaning, I have never had rust issues though. I do but all my track and points second hand so have a big variety of makes of track, but I only ever use Peco points

    Only just seen this! I was in Lincs at the father-in-laws over the weekend and his internet was down! My goodness, that’s a big step up! Good one though. Can’t believe how good that diesel is and if you can get new engines that cheap then it shows how you can be accessible to new hobbyists without breaking the bank. I do like many of the Hornby new releases, but like you I find myself wondering why there isn’t more of a market for cheaper models 🤷🏻‍♂️
    In truth, I don’t think it’s helped by this snobbery that exists, which I swear is behind this trend for almost ridiculously obsessive emphasis on detail. It’s as though they want to make pure enjoyment taboo! I wouldn’t mind, but I find a lot of the detailing doesn’t work as it almost makes the model unusable at times, because you are scared to snap off a delicate piece. It’s ok if you are a fine scale modeller or you make things like that from brass or lost wax metal, but otherwise it is just an expensive accident waiting to happen! 🙄
    Nice use of the trunking by the way. Great thing about that is the ease with which you can remove it safely and it’s rigidity when stored 💡🤓
    Nice one mate, great to see the expo layout is ready to go too 👍🍻🍀

      I agree. Usually, my HO/N stuff has better features an an higher quality than some of what I can see in OO, including some OO models I have bought... And not always at an higher price than the equivalent offer in OO/british N. I have now receive an Arnold SNCF DMU that is a nice little jewel for a decent price. Irony : Arnold is now owned by Hornby...

      And another tip: know your manufacturers... Especially the ones that don't exist anymore.
      Besides Piko you also have Schicht, Prefo, Sachsenmodelle and Gützold which are all coupler compatible with each other, as all these brands were eventually merged into Piko.
      For the west German stuff you have Rowa (predecessor of Roco) and KMB aka Klein.
      Lima did once sell part of their range branded as Hema.

    Great video. Hornby and value for money appear to have parted company. Looks like they are only interested in making money these days. A real shame as the Railroad 0-4-0s and 0-6-0s were the only truly affordable options in new OO gauge. Not any more.

    • @BudgetModelRailways
      @BudgetModelRailways  Před 2 lety +1

      The 0-4-0s have gone up from £40 to £56 in two years, the latest 0-6-0 went up from £50 to £66 between launch and delivery, a 20+% rise. No other manufacturer has seen such rises. Piko hobby range makes the Hornby railroad range look very expensive
