    Brilliant! I will do that too. The extra wood on the side of the top layer should help keep it in place. Thank you for the great idea.

    Many years ago I used to dry my oregano on a screen. I may like the hardware cloth you use here better - easier to clean, faster to dry, less chance of rot from moisture. I especially like that once you build the first one, all you have to do for a second one is snap your fingers. I'd like to learn how to do that trick! 😂 I love your space-saving stacking system. Very clever. Very neat, clean, organized appearance. Thank you Lilly! Hugs and kissies for Amy!

    I especially like how you built the frame dimensions to accommodate the wire dimensions. When I design, I like to look at the materials first and then build so the steps to modify the materials are minimized. Very impressive. Thanks.

    I am 63, my Grandmother dried apples by cutting them up and putting them on a sheet out in the drive way, going out often and turning them, folding them up in sheet and bringing them in the house at night doing same thing next day till dried. Later screens in car, front seat to back with windows rolled up and in sun.

    thx Lily... for the last few years my wife and i have a smallg garden but sometimes it grows more food than we can eat before it goes bad. I thought i would start doing this then i came across your vid - perfect timing. We live in Las Vegas so rain isnt much of an issue 😎 and drying only takes a short time.

    Do you have a real good recipe for some dried beef? Maybe the next video could be about that along with using the dehydrator rack and all you talk of in this video? I love this video, the idea to dry with a food drying rack.

  • @no1slisteninganyway
    @no1slisteninganyway Před 3 lety +4

    Do you have to worry about bugs coming up from underneath or should you put a sheet of the smaller mesh under the bottom rack?

    • @kele1264
      @kele1264 Před 3 lety

      Great question, I'k like to know the answer also.

    • @mattlewandowski73
      @mattlewandowski73 Před 3 lety

      I think she did... while she was assembling the rack, it looked like the fine mesh was on the bottom rack... it is absolutely correct that the outer pieces should be made bug resistant, or there is no point. It should also be noted this is an air drying rack, not a "dehydrator". There are also a number of ways to add a solar component to allow for faster drying. Air drying racks do not work so well in high humidity environments such as the American Southeast... With a proper solar component, you have heated air currents which allows for drying moister foods including jerky or moist fruits such as melon chips, or pineapple. Living in a high humidity area (such as say the American Southeast) I have not had much luck with trying to dry anything more than herbs using an air drying rack. On the other hand I have friends in the Southwest who can use the same design to dehydrate tomatoes.

    ? Unless I'm missing something or a step you did, and I didn't see it, What's stopping the flies from entering from the bottom, I didn't see a screen on the bottom?

    great project. I've grown celeraic, but never dried the root. Does it keep a good flavor when you rehydrate it?
