Lera was born in Saratov, Russia with a congenital condition called arthrogryposis of the lower extremities. While a teenager, Lera and her family would make the difficult decision to amputate so she could achieve better mobility with the use of bilateral above-knee prostheses. After learning to walk again, Lera quickly developed a passion for adaptive sports, including cross country skiing and sled hockey. Since that time, Lera has become an inspiration to other bilateral amputees. She recently participated in Hanger Live's inaugural sled hockey event and is currently on the women's development team for USA Hockey.
