  • The Sanctuary of Barbana is one of the oldest Marian sanctuaries in the world. It is located on the island of Barbana, located at the eastern end of the Grado lagoon.
from which it is connected by a regular ferry service, departing from the Canale della Schiusa (the journey takes about 20 minutes of navigation).
According to tradition, the birth of the sanctuary of the Madonna di Barbana dates back to the year 582, when a violent storm threatened the city of Grado, the exceptional meteorological event aroused great amazement and concern. At the end of the storm an image of the Madonna, carried by the waters, was found at the foot of an elm, near the huts of two hermits originally from Treviso, Barbano and Tarilesso. The place was then relatively far from the coast line and the patriarch of Grado Elia (571-588), as a thank you to the Madonna for having saved the city from the storm, had a first church built. The church was probably rebuilt several times and the same image of the Madonna, it is not known whether a statue or an icon, was lost. Around the year one thousand, the Benedictines took over the Barbanites and officiated the sanctuary for five hundred years. The plague that hit Grado in 1237 and the origin of the city's annual pilgrimage to Barbana dates back to this period.
In 1738 the Franciscans erected a new church with three naves, they remained on the island until 1769, when the Republic of Venice suppressed the monastery. Despite this provision, Venice's ties with the sanctuary were always intense, as evidenced by the testamentary bequests of doges (Pietro Ziani, 1229) and by the existence, in the past, of a special brotherhood of gondoliers ( the "Brotherhood of the Blessed Virgin of Barbana"). The same bas-relief of the main altar of the church of Barbana represents, not surprisingly, a gondola in the lagoon. After the departure of the friars, the sanctuary was then entrusted to diocesan priests for over 130 years. A particularly important role was played by Don Leonardo Stagni, who was responsible for the construction of the current chapel in the wood in the place where the image of Mary was found (1854) and the coronation of the Madonna di Barbana (1863). In 1901 the sanctuary was entrusted to the minor Franciscan friars of the Dalmatian province who built a new convent and started the construction of the current church. The construction works of the current building, which stands on the site of the successive churches in past centuries, were in fact started in 1911 and completed, after a pause due to the First World War, in 1924.
The interior with three naves presents elements of considerable interest in the high altar of 1706 and, above all, in the wooden statue of the Madonna, a work of the Friulian school of the late fifteenth century. The frescoes in the dome (over 500 square meters) are a more recent work by Tiburzio Donadon (1940). The space is divided into four large paintings representing the coronation of Mary, the procession of the perdòn of Barbana, the apparition of the Virgin on the elm, and a vision of the patriarch Elijah. The paintings are separated by white figures that symbolize the four cardinal virtues (prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance). The bell tower, 47.8 meters high, was inaugurated in 1929: the four current bells, as an invitation to peace, were made from the metal of German guns of the Second World War. A short distance from the church, on the place where according to tradition the image of the Madonna ran aground, stands the chapel of the apparition, built in 1854. The chapel, octagonal in shape, was decorated in 1860 by the Udine painter Rocco Pitacco. The paintings represent the glorification of Mary between angels and characters from the Old and New Testament. On the side walls, paintings relating to the proclamation of the dogma and to the life and origins of the sanctuary. The chapel, which is surrounded by a small cemetery, houses the remains of the venerable Egidio Bullesi, a young Istrian who distinguished himself for his apostolate in Pola and Monfalcone.
