- Inspired by the video "You can't play 2 notes at the same time", where the beginning multiphonic part of this recording was transcribed. I highly suggest you check it out! Here's the link:
Full Recording: • James Morrison:Trumpet...
Multiphonic Transcription: • You can't play 2 notes...
This was very interesting to transcribe, although it surprisingly only took a day. James Morrison is a truly skilled musician, and this shows just how creative he can be. The notes which use a trigger are notated, mostly to see how much he has to work with it. The trumpet runs are most definitely not accurate, but each top note is correct, and the rhythms notated are right. I hope you enjoy this transcription! - Hudba
When your teacher decides that an amputation is not an excuse to stop lessons.
believe it or not, I once played with a guy called Fabio Morgera, from Italy, who won a Grammy and is in the Jazz Encyclopedia by Leonard Feather, the baddest mofo ever on a trumpet, and he had a hand amputated in his youth. You had to see it to believe it! Look him up, definitely worth it.
Gotta have great respect for teachers these days. Good ones are hard to find
Morrison is always like: "It's not possible ? Screw you, I'll prove it work"
He is just the sickest to have lived
It's so funny, like he gets pushed aside as almost a "magic trick" type musician but there is absolutely nobody that can touch this guy in terms of style and prowess on the trombone. Not a single person. Maybe Trombone Shorty in his prime. I still prefer James Morrison to Wycliffe, Watrous, Hampton, JJ, Rosolino, all the greats.
Man his one handed solos are better than my two handed ones
Ah yes. Notes all obtainable In first position. With some killer articulation and chops.
And an F trigger.
@@ldbonqThe tenorbass trombone. Gotta love it..
All notes are obtainable in first (if you're a god at lip bending)
@@PutClipsHere I’m “decent” I’ve got some great range tho
@@Sorro421 I can't do it consistently, but at the most, i can maybe play 5th position notes in first after an hour of trying. I usually need a reference pitch as well.
I think if you reach legend level, you might not even need the trigger for the solo.
There was a joke in one of my old band classes that was "any note is first position if you go high enough," and I think that applies here.
Oh come on. Just because HE can do it does not mean it's possible.
Impressive but it should also be noted that he has an F trigger which literally lengthens the airflow and expands the number of notes you can play in “first position”
Nonetheless he’s still a trombone/brass god
Yea it literally do do that
did he lie? no. he still never left first position and forming a decent-solo with only the harmonics is incredibly difficult unless you play at a ridiculous range
I noticed him pissing a little trigger, thanks for the info
The video says "one hand" 🤣
It is mentioned in the video
Best part is I could guess the song based on the solo. That’s some top notch musicianship
I didn’t realize he was playing the trumpet and the trombone
absolutely bonkers.
Love James Morrison! Lovely guy and absolute GOAT!
"nope" 😂😂😂
Lol
This is totally insane... i mean unbelievably amazing.
If anyone can do it it's Mr. Morrison
One of the greatest musician. Greetings from your Polish fan maestro.
The duality of man
I wish I could play this well 2 handed.
absolutely GREAT !!!
very good camera director. you look at a talented back
Incredible!
Fantastic!!!
This is awesome
part 2, he plays them at the same time!
Esplêndido!!👏👏👏👏👏
Amazing!!!!!!
This is closer to sport than it is to music
Fenomeno!
This guy's good, there's no disputing that, but he's one hell of a show-off...
wells he is at a show,
I met him once. I think he genuinely loves playing and having fun with music. He comes across as humble and he’s not afraid to make fun of himself.
@@jesseyoung9654
Doesn't mean he's not a show-off, because he *is* a bloody show-off
@@mymo_in_Bb you don’t like that huh?
@@mymo_in_Bb he's showing off at a show what else is he supposed to do
Broke my hand in 7th grade and had to use paracord as a sling for 6 months. Fun stuff.
Awesome
James Morrison is so cool
You can't play the trombone one handed
Trombonist here really just said: Watch me and I'll play this trumpet flawlessly while we're at it.
"nope" transcription is king
Because playing trumpet upside down wasn't enough.
Genius
I like the one measure of nope because it's too hard to notate
not too hard to notate, too hard to play
actually i think it's because the bassist accidentally pings too hard after the trumpet finishes and distracts morrison, the trombone isn't playing anything in that bar
I imagine going from trumpet to trombone a bit of relax for the lips.
Now, that's an embouchure!
This is true call and response
Is this what happens when horn valves and trombone meet?
It is a key changing valve
@@cartesiancoordinates7758 I was joking
Hey ThatOneGuyValk, my friend Kelvin said that there's nothing more underwhelming than your mother's face and your dad's muscular strength. He said it's pathetic.
@@JoshuaM47644 that is hilarious how that went with my comment
The superbone
I’ve tried making a note on a trumpet with no guidance before, I couldn’t. And as far as I know you have to slide that dang trombone thing, so I have NO idea how this was achieved. Sooooooo impressive.
Btw, Any comments left here I most likely won’t read so you don’t need to bother 👍🏻
Ah. I think I've found religion
I was hoping he would move the slide (using just the F-trigger doesn't 'count'). I have a trumpet and trombone, and want to try this for one song, but it will require moving the slide. I'll have to stabilize the trombone in some way (perhaps coupling it to the trumpet in some way?)
Jazz died when you could no longer dance to it.
Well when you want a job done right...
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
bruh mans played high C in first
So how does he do that? I don't see his hand moving
Wdym, he is using the harmonic series and the F trigger. Are you a bone player?
@@plunger9165 No, I only play with my own bone at night.
But in all seriousness, I don't play it or know much about it. But as far as I know, you need to move the pipe and/or push buttons to get different notes, right?
@@paddotk So there are 7 fundamental positions on a standard Bb tenor trombone. 1st position is the slide all the way in (I am sure you already now this). The harmonic series are the notes you can play wall in first position (you can play all octaves of Bb in 1st position). So Pedal Bb, Bb, F, Bb, D, F, (flat) Ab, Bb, C, D, E (kind of), F and so on. So you can see as you go higher, the notes tend to get closer together so in the low register you can only go from Bb to F but in the high register you can go from C to D which therefore allows you to have an extend range compared to the low register which is why for Most of this solo he plays in the upper register.
Now the trigger is called and F attachment because it increases the total tubing of the trombone by 6 positions which will put it in the key of F (so this will make it fundamentally lower in pitch) and so basically if you engage the trigger, because an F is a fifth from Bb, all the harmonic series I said above will be shifted up a fifth and then down an octave. Triggers are usually there to help out in the low range but can also be utilised in the high range as Morrison displays here, for example you can do a Bb above the staff in first position but you can’t do the C above it (middle C) but if you engage the trigger you can play that C because it will put it technically in sixth position and because you can play that lower C in 6h position you can now play the higher C (middle C).
These are just the basics of how the trombone works and the science of its tubing. If you have any questions let me know (:
James is also using a trombone with an F trigger you can tell by the extra pipes around the main tuning slide, if you are not experienced in the instrument you will probably have a straight tenor which does not have the trigger it is only the slide you have to change the notes (apart from the harmonic series). Once you advance and become more intermediate (if you do) you will be introduced to the Bb/F trombone (trombone with trigger) this is for most genres the trombone plays in; orchestras, marching bands, concert bands and brass bands but if you consider jazz to be more of your taste then you will most likely stick with the straight tenor.
@@plunger9165 Thanks for the elaborate explanation! It's pretty clear in overall (I assume with 'Bb' you mean B minor right?), but what I don't get is how exactly you play different notes/octaves with one position. With the trigger I can picture two positions and thus notes, but what other actions/positions are there besides sliding to play different notes?
This guy again.
It’s all in that tuning slide
James Morrison is like the Zeus of the brass world
Non ho parole
Pura virtuosidad
It’s not magic, it’s having a trigger trombone. He has amazing articulation and some amazing chops, but all of those notes are achievable in first position or using the trigger while in first position
He is clearly using the trigger for F/6th position which gives you the G, A, B, D-flat, E-Sharp from F upwards. Also the E-flat and C below the F on the way down at the end of the solo. Basically the above the F it is the same as 2nd valve on a trumpet or 2nd position on the trombone. Above the F that is all you need to get all the semitones. Then the skill to apply the articulation etc.
It’s still a lot of practice to do that. Like telling a trumpet player to play the one section of carnival of Venice with only one finger. Sure you can do it but you don’t just sight read it.
No one said he wasn't using a trigger? What are you trying to defend?
He still used one hand so what is your point
music literally sas "T" to indicate where he pulls the trigger
"Try me"
What does the "T" mean on the trombone transcription ? Is it the trigger key to lower the note with his trombone (idk how we call it, the part behind his head) ?
The T is over any notes which he uses the trigger for
@@jaqthetrombone okay thank you ! Impressive that you recognize the trigger event if you don't see the trombone !
What’s the name of the song?? It’s so familiar but I forget the name

"nope."
Someone explain how it is possible to play those notes without using that valve operator on the trombone!!
No but can we talk about that not he hit with the trumpet 😂
bro my initials are also jaq and i also play trombone
Where’s my guy George collier at
Naturtonreihe ?
How....
How wat sus hu
Seems like his playing a double trombone not an ordinary Bb trombone, title a bit misleading but it's ok. Look here for the proof 1:18
read the description, the trigger use is notated within the transcription too
Double trombone??? I've never heard anyone ever call a trombone with an F attachment as such (That's more a french horn thing in my experience). Nothing wrong or misleading with simply calling a tenor trombone with valve a trombone imo, and it's not like they are uncommon either.
@@lindsaygibson2142 idk this dude a weirdo cause f attachment is just a standard trombone but with a trigger, only thing i could think he meant was bass since double kinda indicates two triggers
My friend Kelvin said that you don't have the talent to perform any brass instrument and that everyone else does.
nope, lol
This is disgusting in the best way
the greatest bl*w job i have ever seen without the yuck though
does anyone else feel like the bass is a little too busy sometimes? it's kinda distracting, and the fact that it's electric doesn't make it any better lol
anyways great job on the transcription
