- Hello everyone. FIRST A TUNING SETTINGS UPDATE. I recreated this snare tuning at my home studio to double check, and verify the tuning profile settings. The Tune Bot read settings at 2 octaves for each head, and I should have included the settings as upon further inspection with the TB tool I believe the tuning comes closer to the higher settings than the lower settings posted in the video Drum Dial Settings stay the same SOOOOOO, THE UPDATED SETTINGS FOR THE PERFECT 5TH TUNING IN THIS VIDEO ARE AS FOLLOWS:
BATTER - TB B flat 3 233 DD 88 (Tune Bot also read B flat 2 117)
RESONANT - F4 349 DD 79 (Tune Bot also read F3 175)
Now that I've made sure to clarify for those who use the settings I provide , here’s a drum comparison video that I had an absolute blast making. Tuning profiles for the drums I compared are included (Pitches, Drum Dial, & Tune Bot Settings). Featuring the awesome drumming of ATX drummer Jason Corbiere (who plays for Blues legend Jimmie Vaughn), this video shows a side by side comparison of a few modern Rogers drums with some vintage Rogers Drums to see if the new Rogers models stack up against the older models which are legendary for their amazing sound. Specifically a 12” modern Rogers Covington Tom vs. a 1968 Holiday (Dayton) Tom, and a modern 5” x 14” Dyna-Sonic snare vs a 1965 5” x 14” Dyna-Sonic snare. I matched the tunings between the drums, and although his drum heads have been well played on, I did my best to make this a fair comparison. The shells for the new Rogers drums have been made via a one of a kind proprietary mold/heat bending process to create an incredible sounding drum that will match the legacy of that incredible “Rogers Sound”. While I have my own opinion of the great job they did in re- birthing a legendary line of drums, pease judge for yourself if the new Rogers drums made the mark. (BTW my personal opinion is they nailed it). In the process you will get to hear the wonderful drumming of Mr. Jason Corbiere, plus the tuning profiles I used for the drums used for the comparison. For those who LOVE Rogers drums this is a great opportunity to see just how awesome the new Dyna-Sonic snares are, as well as what an epic job they have done with these Covington kits. This is also a great example of how AWESOMELY the Heil Drum Mic Kit performed capturing drum sounds in the studio. I’ve always loved them for live performances, but I’m absolutely stoked at how well they have performed for me in the studio.
That laugh by Jason at the very end says it all! Says to me the tone and decay of the drum was *right* in that perfect spot where you would hope it would be! Excellent job! Amazing!

Great sounding drums..and I'm glad that Rogers is back to producing 'real' Rogers drums as opposed to the abominations produced with the Rogers name after original Rogers folded. I have a Covington era Rogers set (mid-1960's) in the 'steel grey ripple' finish: two 14 x 20" basses, two 8 x 12" toms, a 9 x 13" tom, 16 x 16" floor tom, and a 5 x 14" COB Dynasonic snare. Beavertail lugs, 'bow tie' tuning keys on the basses, and Rogers script badges on the shells. Build quality on those old original Rogers drums is first rate and from what I've seen and read the new 'reissue' Rogers drums keeps up that tradition with some improvements like grommeting under the lugs. I have many drums but that Rogers set is my treasured possession.
Man I am with you on that era Rogers drums as well as your treasure kit. Amazing drums.. Hence when I put ‘my new kit side by side, and the new ones sounded the same, AND had the same build quality I was sold. THANK YOU so much for commenting, and for watching.

Kenny, you do such a wonderful and easy to understand explanation of what it takes to achieve musical sounding drums. When reading drum forums, I notice the questions that are looking for the answers that you so graciously provide. And I see many links to your videos because of it.
As a difficult request, could you do a video about ride cymbals? We can't tune those. What qualities should we look for in a ride that fit our music styles! Size, pitch, sustain.. ect. I'm a tuning nut, but can't find my perfect ride. Thanks!

The Cleveland era Rogers are the nicest, but those ones sure do sound nice!
So I got a chance to test the 12, 16, 22 + 14x5. Absolutely loved it. The drums were very well made (particularly great attention to detail on the inner shell and bearing edges) and they sounded simply superb. The kit gave me "that" Rogers sound instantly (fat, warm, deep yet articulate and tuneful) and that was with about 10 minutes of tuning with single ply coated heads! Excellent work everyone involved. I look forward to seeing these take their well deserved place amongst the most prized kits to own.

@@KennySharretts Bought the snare. Love it. I have a question though. My snare has beavertail lugs, but I ideally wanted the B/B's but couldn't find one. I've found modern B/B lugs for sale, but the hole spacing quoted from the supplier is different on the B/B's to the Bravertails. Do you know if that's correct?
Not to worry I've managed to do some research and they are different. Oh well!
It seems to me that any drum that Kenny tunes sounds awesome! As do both of these Rogers kits. I really couldn't tell the difference. They both sound great! 🥁❤

awesome stuff and HUGELY relevant! I always wondered about this aince I saw the new kits, how they would sound compared to my four rogers kits. but i only have 2 cob dynasonics (big R and oval badge). i like my 20, 12, 14 dayton holidays with beaver tail tom lugs and bowtie kick t-rods the best. it seems that a new wood dyna would go well with these.

Kenny, in one of your previous videos with the Rogers kit involving 3 different tuning profiles on the list you showed us what the DrumDial settings were for both the batter and reso head. I was wondering if you have a video with the Evans Torque Key?, If not it'd be awesome to see you do a review video with it and see where you can set the torque tentions to still get those nice sounds.👍🏼

I like the vintage Rogers. The new Rogers sound good but it’s not mentioned that they are so expensive, the new three piece Rogers is way more expensive than an original vintage Rogers kit.

I’m a first generation passionate Rogers player and yes, it’s great to see these kits back, although I’m not convinced they are back! What I’m seeing is a cheap looking overpriced Taiwanese kit dressed up with Rogers hardware and labels. I gonna wait for the next comeback.
Yummy. Love em both really. Toms sounded identical. I like both snares, the vintage had a little more ring which I liked a lot. New one a little drier, sounds awesome. I’ve got my eye on a new Dyna for my next snare! There’s nothing like that snare system, it’s the best.

I have a 60s Rogers Holiday kit - kick and toms (12, 13, 16, 20). But unfortunately, no snare.I picked it up for cheap and did a rebuild with parts from another Holiday kit that somebody gave me because they were covered with contact paper and painted red on the inside; they had no idea what they were giving me because they looked like crap. I also have 80s Pearl and 90s DW kits. But for recording, I always come back to the Rogers. That 20 inch kick records better than anything and the toms really sing and have a really wide tuning range. Even when I use the DW toms, I still use the Rogers kick. Truly special drums. And a shoutout to the Heil mics -- Kenny's vids confirm what I knew already: the PR30 is awesome for drums.

I love the sound of the dynasonic so much. I like the modern snare slightly better than the vintage (in this example anyways). But the toms sound exactly the same.

The shells may be made in Taiwan but is that a concern? Taiwan is the new USA in manufacturing. Specifications coming out of there are top shelf.
ABSOLUTELY!! Not only are these shells clearly crafted to the highest of standards BUT the are also crafted to incredibly intense specs to recreate this vintage sounds. Assembled in America with hand sanded bearing edges by bad ass artisans. Love these drums. Truly a beautiful union of 2 countries to re-create an American classic.

I'm picking up a 12, 16, 22, + 14x5 new covington kit in WMP to check them out tomorrow. What I'm seeing and hearing here sounds very encouraging. My only concern at this point is the size restrictions on kit configurations. Any idea when a more open choice of individual drums, or a wider range of kits like 12, 14, 18 or 13, 16, 24 would become available? Many thanks.

RNL yes they are. I’ve been a Heil fan for live for the longest time. In the studio they have proved to be awesome. The rear rejection makes drum recording in a small room super easy. Thx for watching.

The differences are more apparent with the snares- the vintage has a prominent, sustained ring, whereas the modern sounds slightly muted by comparison. The toms sound VERY close.
Dane Bono agreed. I know the older head on the vintage contributed to the ring, but the more open tone of the vintage drums is what you hope for with age. Can’t wait to hear these drums in 15 years. 🤗🤗🤗 Thx for watching, and commenting Dane.
Modern Tom sounds a little drier,snare has a little more zing,both kits sound ferlipping lovely.😘🥁🌻

🤣🤣🤣 following the guidelines. I was using someone else’s facility so I was sure to be respectful of them, AND the peeps helping me with the shoot. A common courtesy I extend to my fellow man, and those I was blessed to have help me on this shoot. Besides this was shot in the early summer of 2020. I had just been on a UK tour, and I saw the Euro news reports on Covid. Quite different from the news in the US. I had also seen British TV reporters, and public officials crying while literally begging for anyone with a ventilator/ventilators to bring them into the govt. They would pay any price. Yikes! The British don’t cry on TV. They are some of the most brave, steadfast, and unsinkable folks on the planet. HENCE if I can protect my cameraman or guest drummer from my possible infection (because you don’t always know right away), then I mask up. I have moments in my history that make me deeply understand the value of service to others on this matter. I hope your understand this is not political to me. 🙏 thank you for watching

My opinion
1st of all thank you for complimenting the sound. These are actually really well made drums. Im actually quite aware that the shells are made in Taiwan. They are actually custom crafted to a very specific standard by Reliant, then they are shipped to the U.S. where the edges are hand sanded by Bill Detamore, and assembled by the awesome team at Pork Pie. The quality is second to none so for the money you are at least getting a great product. Thank you for watching.

The FuzzBoxx if that’s how you feel I can understand. Alas I was using a business facility that was required by state mandate to use masks. Hence if anyone got sick on my shoot i’m liable. I don’t have that kind of money. Moreover, since several of the people involved with this shoot were adamant about masking, I was more than happy to support my fellow citizens needs. Also I wore the mask so Jason didn’t have to while he was drumming. Finally I have a health condition that makes it advisable to wear a mask at this time. Hence no politics involved here. Just respect, and following the local laws of doing business. Sorry if any of that doesn’t make sense to you, but I hope it does.
