The church of San Francesco a Ripa is located in the Trastevere district in the square of San Francesco d'Assisi and is famous for the statue of Blessed Ludovica Albertoni by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
The church owes its name to its proximity to the suppressed port of Ripa Grande, overlooking the Tiber until the nineteenth century.
The current complex stands in the same place as an ancient hospital and hospice for the care and reception of the poor dedicated to San Biagio and built in the 10th century; it depended on the nearby Cluniac Benedictine monastery of Saints Cosma and Damiano and, thanks to the interest of Giacoma de Settesoli, Francesco d'Assisi also found accommodation there during his visits to the pope between 1209 and 1223. Starting from 1681, thanks also to the funding of Cardinal Lazzaro Pallavicino who died in 1680 and buried in the church itself, the building was the subject of a radical restoration which involved the demolition and reconstruction of the hall, based on a project by Mattia de Rossi; the works ended in 1701.
Above the altar of the Paluzzi Albertoni chapel, there is the Blessed Ludovica Albertoni, sculpted by Gian Lorenzo Bernini for Cardinal Paluzzi between 1671 and 1675. The statue, a true example of mystical-carnal transport and Baroque ecstasy, is placed on a spectacular jasper drape over the altar table of the chapel; the back wall, again according to the suggestions of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, was scenographically set back to allow the light to penetrate into the environment from two hidden side windows, creating an almost supernatural effect, just like in the Ecstasy of Santa Teresa of the church of Santa Maria della Vittoria. The altarpiece of the chapel, framed by stucco cherub heads that reaffirm the hint of mystical apparition that pervades the whole chapel, is by Baciccio and depicts the Madonna and Child with St. Anne (around 1675).
In the back wall of the right arm of the transept, there is the chapel dedicated to Saints Pietro d'Alcántara and Pasquale Baylón, patronage of the Pallavicini Rospigliosi family, whose sumptuous decoration in polychrome marble was designed by Nicola Michetti and Ludovico Rusconi Sassi between 1710 and 1725.
Above the altar of the first chapel on the left there is a painting by the Flemish Maarten De Vos depicting the Immaculate Conception; in a room annexed to the latter there have been, since 1992, the mortal remains of Giorgio de Chirico, benefactor of the Friars Minor to whom he was particularly attached.

Excellent capture of this church, showing it from all possible angles, including the exterior context. The interior is a treasury of artistic achievement. // I realize it is an actual church in service, not a museum, but it could benefit from some curatorial supervision. Some items, such as painted plaster statues and potted plants, have obviously been introduced by people who do not have expert aesthetic judgement. Their devotional handiwork detracts from the artistic integrity of the church as a whole.

A Baroque Masterpiece photographed by the MASTER - Massimo! All so beautifully done, and, I was surprised to learn Giorgio de Chirico is buried here. Such a Baroque contrast, but a great master himself, and favourite of mine. Molte Grazie, Massimo, from Sydney in Sydney (in lockdown week NINE!)

Grazie Maria. E grazie per il consiglio. In alcuni video ho messo pure commenti parlati ma è un lavoro che prende molto più tempo e impegno.
