Rewinding a Large Motor at KOFFLER

- bukaymedia.com This shows how a large motor is re-wound, serviced, and tested. The scale, complexity, teamwork, and know-how required by the people at the KOFFLER Electrical facilities in San Leandro, CA. is amazing! Everything, from making the wire coils to the Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VIP) process, is done at this one location. KOFFLER's website is at www.koffler.com
The motor in this video is used to power a pump that removes water from a submarine dry dock facility at Pearl Harbor. Another video at bukaymedia.com/koffler.htm documents how the large pump impeller powered by this motor is balanced.
This movie is a good example of how web videos efficiently communicate a company's unique capabilities to its customers and prospects. Can you imagine trying to tell this story in 5 minutes without a video? - Věda a technologie
Always nice to see guys who are proud of their work, and it shows here....
I used to work on a submarine drydock in the UK. It was four sections of a much longer WWII battle ship dry dock. Each section had two alternators, neither of which were as large as the synchronous motor in the video. Very impressive facility and personnel at KOFFLER Electric.

Love working with these guys! Real professionals!!!
that was awesome, thank you. The detail and painstaking work, wow
Amazing video and amazingly talented people doing the work, Thank You for this!
work
What a great trip down memory lane this is. I started my armature winder apprenticeship in Manchester UK in 1960. Worked on small motors to 500 MW sets, motor testing, through college, drawing office, senior electrical engineer and qualified teacher. Hard work but creative and a great start in life! Loved it. The world should have an annual Tesla day. Best wishes?
Excellent video and handcrafted work ! Thanks for taking the time to show us. True professionals !
2:50 I think we could really use that anti-corona paint rn
XD silly you. It’s to prevent sparks.
Rewinding the rotor, balancing the rotor, rewinding the stator, baking the stator then sealing the stator. I loved that job.
I'm jealous of the workers depicted in this video. They are skilled, and have the opportunity to work as part of a team in a technical field.
Awesome, i'm studying in electrical motor. And found this video. Thank you!
Hi Ari,
I'm glad it was helpful! I also learned a lot about motors while filming these videos! Sort of like being a kid in a candy shop!
Mike
Chuck Norris want a 5 - 7 times this motor size and strength for his pocket sized cooling fan.
Please help him build that.
@@noorazmi2329 Chuck doesn't have to cool his nuts. His nuts cool him.
I know this is old but where are you studying
great job ! very professional.
What an amazing job you guys do, very impressive.
I was truly amazed while filming their work! So hands-on, and must be done so precisely! Thanks for watching.
Mike
job
Amazing work!!
I was mesmerized, amazing work!
I work for a company that makes the coils that go into the motor always love seeing what happens after we get finished and send them off
Me too..i work in Birmingham...forming the stator coils
Brings back memories of my apprenticeship days . Many hours goes into a build project like this . Solid bar windings building and insulation took over a month for a similar size stator . About 3months all up just for the stator rebuild of similar size .
many hours
Just love those 1st few turns on the balancer.... will it stay on the rollers I ask...
Very nice video and the work and craftsmanship is great!
nice work fellas!
Very Very Impressive!
Wow! Great work.
Very cool, my hands hurt watching this but i want to jump in!
Rosie O’Donnell thanks you guys for fixing her treadmill motor.
"Hello? Yes, this is 1994. Who may I ask is calling? ... ... ... No thanks. We won't be needing that joke back, but thank you for calling."

great job, thanks for the video
This is real world work. Good job men.
well done. Reliable workshop.
Great job with the craft. The video edit was nicely done too
WOW amazing art work
i m interested. i love this kind of rewinding works
Wow, been along time since I've seen all those guys!! Pretty cool video
Who's looking for some of that anti-corona epoxy in 2020?
All of us
@k cookers Hey how much u want for it?
@Samuel Lynch Yes, we also know that corona is an electrical effect of magnetic fields. Our sun gets/has a corona around it. The virus when viewed through a microscope has some resemblance to the sun with it's corona and this is where the virus got it's name.
@Samuel Lynch sir I think you missed the joke
@@aculasabacca No, it is all about high electric field (has nothing to do with magnetic field). At sharp points, the electric field is so high it causes ionization of the air. Corona refers to crown, king's and queen's crown has lots of spikes and hence the name.
Looks like excellent craftsmen. Nice job
Amazing.
Is an electrical engineer symphony.
this is really cool!
Awsome work gents!!
As an engineer, I find this video orgasmically interesting!
Really nice craftsmanship.
I apliciate that, loving this work, from Tanzania
Excelente trabajo...muy prolijo
QUALITY JOB! +1M likes to the workers!
A good job by skilled workers!
worker
Exlent very useful understanding large scale motors working and inside structure
Me encanta este trabajo!
As an electrical engineer, this video is a lot of fun to watch.
Professionalism and technology.
Nice
I did not know how these big motors were repaired
beautiful craftsmanship The knowhow is tremendous
How can we control run-out issue in vertical machines rotor.
And slip ring run-out in horizontal machines.
Nice video, I rewound my share of 2300 - 4160 volt stators, but the slip ring rotor was a very nice looking rewind. Of course we did more Mush / Random stators, just weren't that HUGE!!! LOL. My step dad worked at Vincent Electric in Oakland for 30 plus years Don Rader he was a Damn good winder. I retired 5-yrs ago, sold my business to a kid that I hired in 1979 and I still go in to visit and once in a while still stuff a cake job. I don't miss the knuckle busters.
Paul Monaco i just lost my job with GE doing this kind of work, even bigger motors than these, can i ask what kind of money a "winder" makes down there?? for the record i was getting 33/hr canadian, other places seems to pay about the same up here... just curious
Huge respect for you, sir.
@@DrunkenGuitarGuy I just your question, well in Portland Oregon the winders get paid a lot less. The range is from $17.50 -hr for beginner to $38.00 for an " OLD PRO " but the OLD guys always got plenty of OT. So they were really making $125K to $175K a year. In California where my step Dad worked I guessing back then he was in the $40.00 to $46.00 per hour range, Today they maybe $50.00 to $55.00 hr. The shop rate is $135.00 hr. so I'm guessing they make a little PROFIT!!! hahahahahaha.
Did they rebuild the bearings too?
great work, and this video has study how to made of generator
Will that fit in my Nissan Leaf? Seriously though that looks like crazy work. Need to always be on the ball since if you mess up it throws off the whole motor and you have to start over.
Beautiful!
Great power american this motor what;s capacity in HP and kv requiered in your start ... thank Michael for your videos ...
Question: Is working a few years in a coil shop making stator coils enough experience to help get your foot in the door at a winding shop like this?
Nice video
Wow, that is a beautiful shop and every one of those guys is a true master.
That's a cool job!
Very good job
that was awesome
Excelentes profissionais
The company I work for has made stator coils for y’all before!!!!
I want to work this here..so i am very interested
I used to do this on a summer job in Midland Texas..lower scale though...220 v motors..
Tony Avila west Texas baby I’m from big spring
Such work is always forced to stand still open in amazement mouth. Great, very expensive equipment.
And so much knowledge and skill is required to do the job correctly!

حقيقة عمل يستحق التقدير والاحترام
how many capacity this motor
Great job on the video production!
Thanks Allen!
Music was way too loud in distracting a lot of these types of videos where they show things being built they don't play any music at all instead they amplify the sounds of the shop really helping you put yourself there
superb video...!!
Extremely cool working on such a large motor. ..How many horse power ,rpm volts ,watts and amps??
Nice image of the Russian sub at the beginning.
Russian subs are the nicest in the world)
Best submarine builders in the world
Fastest Sub K-222
Largest sub Typhoon Class
And they have great stealth subs as well
The new Borei is lightly smaller but far more capable than the Typhoon
While all valid points... I don't expect to see a Russian sub dry docked at Pearl Harbor so we can give it a once over.
Barnekkid
@@ShainAndrews Well...I guess if the Russians fork over some cash, they could slap a new coat of paint on it or something.
If it is not a problem cold you tell me how many kg of copper is in that motor?
is this going in an e revo?
Wow , that is huge .
Nice job! I hope that i could join that company :)
can be utilsed in water pumping stations as well as in large hydro power plants
Super
Amazing work, great job guys.
Such huge motors. Pump water out of oil drilling. Ship docks. Mostly used for salt production from near by sea.
Holy crap that's big!
Amazing Job guys !!
What is the model NILES lathe that is in the video Sir ??? Very nice work fellas.
Very impressive rotor size. Could you tell me the number of poles and connection of the rotor winding ? Thanks
By looking at the coils of the stator, looks like about a 8 or 10 pole
I love rewind this is
my second love.
Can you imaging the EMF that it's putting out when it on?
definitely, there must be some device to reduce the current/voltage during spinning up.
Как у Вас называется шнур которым вы секции между собой связываете?
my table saw ain't gonna bog down now
I would love to do this work
Fantastic to see such skills, ask a kid what an armature winder is - clueless would be 1st guess.. Just loved the 1st run up on the balancing machine... 50/50 as to whether it'd come off the rollers. Been nice to see the finished motor work full belt emptying the dry dock some massive pump I imagine..
Why would a kid be expected to know that?
really liked the video....can u tell me the rating of the motor? must be really big for the conductors used it XD
Wonderful motor!
what is called winding yellow cover???
I use those in my Honda Prius
This is crazy hands on labor .
good video
really it was more than exlant , thanks for tecknology
anu gamit na start running capacitor kaya dito hehe
Making money the old fashioned way, delivering true value to the customer. Great going!
So true!
It love this work
