Ravel's famous orchestration of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" - complemented by other musical marvels from the period before the Second World War: the large string orchestra seems to permeate the interior of a cathedral with its abundance of colour and spatial effect when Vaughan Williams' Tallis Fantasy climbs its mighty ascents. With his "Gregorian Concerto", Ottorino Respighi translated ancient thematic material into the musical language of the early 20th century: an old Easter sequence from the time before the turn of the first millennium, which he clothed in a suggestive interplay of dazzling orchestral colours - with the magnificent Frank Peter Zimmermann as violin soloist.

Absolutely wonderful concert
Enjoyed every minute of it
Superb performances from everyone
Thanks WDR
Streamed this exceptional concert on tv when it went live. Perfect! Bravo, Frank Peter Zimmermann breathtakingly performing Ottorino Respighi: Concerto gregoriano with WDR Sinfonieorchester under the baton of Stanislav Kochanovsky! 2 encores speak a lot! Wonderful program, thank you.
Thank you, WDR Klassik for livestream.
That was SUPERB! What a performance!
Thankyou. Loved the Vaughan Williams and the Respighi. I thought in the Mussorgsky/Ravel the playing got a little scrappy in "The Market Square at Limoges" as the conductor was trying to conduct it at a tempo faster than the orchestra wanted to, or could play it, neatly.
10:10 Start
