    We fitted a hemp wadding in our loft in Germany. We didn't want any nasty chem or fibres. Very happy with the smell, and glad it keeps the 37°C summer heat out. Well worth the extra cost. And, yes, you're sequestering carbon. Definitely a win-win. 😊

    Thanks a lot for your video. I’m living in the north of Russia, average winter temperatures is above -25-27 C°. I’ve insulated my house with hemp and linen(flax) insulation (there is no big difference between). Everything is cool. The most significant advantage of hemp or linen insulation - no need to install plastic vapour barrier, you should only install paper vapour (or steam) limiter. microclimate became much bettter. Good luck!

    The only thing that I noticed missing was the fact that, even thought the upfront cost may be higher for now, the long-term savings in energy for heating and cooling will far outweigh that cost. I've even heard some buildings didn't require A/C because it regulated temperature within so well. I'm sure that highly depends on location and climate - but, that's truly impressive. One additional point - if you build with hempcrete in addition to using hemp insulation - you are multiplying the effectiveness. I'm looking forward to the advancements and adoption of this technology.

    Nice. have you guys looked at the "fungus/mushroom" insulation that's been developed? I'd be interested in seeing your analysis of that. Best that I recall, there was a video that showed how the stuff is grown in a form. I seem to recall a warehouse or something with racks of forms and the fungus culture being grown in them.
    In the end, when it's reached the right growth and packed the form, it's decanted. There was a final step of some kind (don't remember exactly) where the stuff was either cooked to a certain temperature or hit with UV to kill it and render it inert.
    What you were left with was a dense block of insulation that slid into place in framing sort of like you did with the hemp bats.
    I don't remember any details, like R value or fire resistance, but I'm assuming that was mentioned because I do not have a recollection of a big negative.
    Thanks for the video.

      I would like to see wood and hempcrete used in earthquake zones like Turkiye. Hemp using lime as a binder is thought to last at least one hundred years and is a breathable material making it an excellent insulator. Hemp should be subsidized as it removes a lot more carbon from our atmosphere than trees. Bamboo is the best for removing carbon but it is the same as wood so it will rot and be attacked by insects.

    It seems that you can grow hemp on marginal land to improve it for crop raising eventually. Like beans it fixes nitrogen in the soil and the roots break up hard clays. So for anyone with a tract of poor soil this could bring it into full cultivation after a few years. That it fixes so much CO2 makes it a real environmental choice. I am guessing like hempcrete it can be used to insulate old buildings that have single walls which breathe moisture, stone and brick, without rotting?

  • @aureas
    @aureas Před 2 lety +3

    Thank you for this. The only thing I never hear people talk about as a con specifically,?is the fact that the Hemp wool always seems to contain some percentage of plastic in it. 😕 This is a huge drawback to me, because it takes away from the compostability of the product, the sustainability of it in the long run, cradle to cradle like. We don’t need more micro plastics in the world! I really want to use hemp wool in my build, but that part is very disappointing to me. I wish there was something they would find to use as an alternative.
    And also yes, the fire proof shocker! 🔥😳🔥 Wow. That’s disappointing. That it isn’t as fire proof as they claim.
    I wonder if sprinkling it all over in both sides with boric acid / borax mixture would could help that?

    I've been hearing a lot about this lately, and it's gradually becoming more widely available as time goes on. I have heard from some European contractos that it will rot under certain circumstances, but I don't know accurate this is, since no one in Canada or the U.S. mentions the problem. They often build homes with cement or stone, though, and that may have something to do with the concern. (I wonder if the smell of newly-mown grass counts as "off-gassing"? Pretty pleasant, if is does!

But I must say that hemp wool insulation is very very interesting as well, as it has many of not all of the benefits of wood fibre insulation, but the turn around time (from seed to finished product), is much faster than it is for trees. I've been in insulation since 1966. It's organic, retains moisture. Because of that while not promoting the growth of mold and fungus, moisture can leach into the sheetrock and form mold and mildew.. Might be good in open attics where it can breath and stay dry, but not exterior wall where it is exposed to condensation. So the claims are only good for the material only.
