In this beginner tennis lesson, I teach my student Anna how to hit the forehand volley, backhand volley, and overhead. If you have never played before you can follow the tips in this video to get started with these strokes.

In her first video, I was most impressed with her natural athleticism and hand-eye. I'm still impressed with that, but in this video what strikes me is how coachable she is. She takes instruction and can actualize it. Great work Anna, and great coaching Nick!

This beginner series is great. I just started playing and struggled to find this level of tuition, just how to set up your body and how to hit the ball, so useful. Now I can hit the ball, I am following your drills for wall practice, I feel like you are leading me logically. So good, Coach, please keep up this series, and great work Anna! Thank you both.

It´s incredible how simillar we teach the volleys, I also start by making sure the grip is right, no swing at all and starting with hand-feed where the player has to play back to me. Before going back to the moving forward volley I do teach them to split step and to try to "attack the ball" with the opposite foot (something you also did on the low volleys) so they understand they have to move towards the ball. On the overhead, she didnt move always under the ball, I really liked the solition with the hand feed. Great video!!

I have no clue how the first video was recommended to me but this is now the second video I have watched with you and Anna and I Sam learning so much! You explained everything so well. Your student progresses really fast! When I was a kid, my coach told me that the volleys are like hitting a high five with the ball.

Yeah that was the most impressive thing to me. First low volley and her technique is EXCELLENT. Keeps the racquet above the wrist, good posture. Really really good.
I always found pointing to the ball when hitting an overhead shot helps tremendously.
This universal truth, its a beginner technique. ....💪💯

You see, I do practice the right way, and my consistency is high in both practice and in a match, but I tend to feel rushed while playing a match vs feeling having all the time in the world during practice. I am not sure how to deal with feeling rushed in a match, nor how to practice it! Any thoughts or references where I might look for answers since this is currently my top reason why I loose matches. Thanks!

Just one question!!! When you tell her to tried backhand volley with one hand, she is holding the racket with a forehand grip instead of continental grip.isn’t it?
interesting. remember my own learning experience like 30y ago. At minute 9:30 she intuitively does the right feet movement with both legs. Yet you never mentioned this foot stance ( e.g. put your left foot in front on a forehand volley ). How important is this nowadays? I remember back in the days we did train that extensively. (always hit volley with right foot in front)

I still can't catch the difference between a Continental and ForeHand Grip so I put it on the floor right and pick it up or if I put it straight forward and grip the Racket feel the same for me at what Angle is it...
@3.30 Coach said stay open stance (or 1/4 of turn), I just was told to do complete shoulder turn, who can help to understand, is there any conflict ?

So Anna is supposed to be a beginner but she has a complete tennis wardrobe.
She fits the part beautifully. Probably makes her play better.
She's not deflecting - she's punching. Deflecting implies lateral movement only, whereas punching implies a short movement that includes a fore-aft component.
Are these dancing outfit gloves? :D

I'm curious, you said the disadvantage to a 2-hand volley is you have less reach when going to the left, but then you have her hold the racket in her right hand to reach across the body to the left, which is still gives her less reach than if she were to switch to the left hand and arm. Is there a reason not to switch hands?
Left hand is unstable, backhand volley is necessary
Use your cross step on the backhand volley. Let go of the racket on contact - you've just doubled your reach.
