    I'm with Evelyn on the Micro SD choice. It's a "backup", so you can leave it in there most of the time and not even remove it. The Micro SD doesn't bother me at all.

    • @airdailyx
      @airdailyx Před 9 měsíci +4

      Exactly, i have a couple 240gb micros lying around unused. I’ll just leave it in there, send jpegs to that card and pretend its internal memory. Use my uhs 2’s for raw

    • @sh8736
      @sh8736 Před 9 měsíci +3

      Agreed I think it’s a great idea, wish Sony have put in their recent 7C2 and 7RC, as a single card slot on those cameras is a reason not to buy them

    • @Robert-R
      @Robert-R Před 9 měsíci +8

      Completely agree. It's a non-issue. Just leave the micro-SD in the camera all the time as a backup and reformat it when it gets full. And if you need to download images you can do it via the USB cable so there's no need to worry about fiddling with the card. Put it in once and forget it. The added benefit is that when you go out to shoot with it and realize you didn't bring a memory card (I'm sure nobody has ever done that before), you'll still be able to use it. Those that really feel that Nikon should have put in 2 SD cards, or a CF Express + SD card, or additional buttons, should state what other feature they would prefer to give up. There is absolutely no wasted space with the camera, so in order to put in 2 SD cards you would need to have a smaller battery, which nobody wants, or the body needs to become bigger. At what point does it no longer look like a retro camera because it had to become so large to fit all the features that everybody feels need to be in there. There's a reason the Df didn't sell. If you want more buttons, and CF Express + SD card at around the same price, buy the Z6II (which won't be as good) or wait for the Z6III.

    • @Omegaparsec
      @Omegaparsec Před 9 měsíci +3

      Agree too, saw on some other video that the micro sd doesn’t come out unless you remove the battery. Nikon definitely designed it to be set and forget.

    • @assumptionsoup
      @assumptionsoup Před 9 měsíci

      Good luck with that. Microsd cards have limited writes, and fail far quicker than regular sd cards.

  • @RandumbTech
    @RandumbTech Před 9 měsíci +111

    I think the Micro SD is a BRILLIANT move. It is purely for backup only. By not having another SD card slot, you can keep the size tidy.

    • @cityhunter2501
      @cityhunter2501 Před 9 měsíci +5

      I agree on this, it is a backup, not meant for sequential shooting anyway. Not sure why Dave doesn't like it and prefer having a 2nd SD card slot for backup, it is just a waste of space at that point. I mostly shoot single SD card slots as well but if you are a pro, then having a backup can be a life saver

    • @NetvoTV
      @NetvoTV Před 9 měsíci +1

      Why not just have 2 microSD card slots then?

    • @cityhunter2501
      @cityhunter2501 Před 9 měsíci +1

      my guess is because of size, because it is smaller then there's higher chance that you may lose it, break it. hence why for me it's a good idea to use it only for backup/worst case scenario. ie have to take it out and load on a computer only if the primary SD card fails. also most drones (maybe all) already uses microSD cards.

    • @KikujiroChan
      @KikujiroChan Před 9 měsíci

      I also think it's pretty smart. The micro sd always stays in the camera and all pictures are saved on both cards and you just format the micro sd after the backup of the regular sd card.

    • @JPC009
      @JPC009 Před 9 měsíci

      @@cityhunter2501I like the analog styling and tactile experience, but my workflow usually goes: shoot sequential; pass SD card off to the editor; make a backup of the SD card I kept; keep shooting.
      Seems like a nice setup if you’re only going for photos though.

  • @thomaschamberlin2485
    @thomaschamberlin2485 Před 9 měsíci +34

    I think of the micro SD card as internal memory. I will never take that card out. It is there for if I forget my SD card for me. Even if you use it for backup, it still stays in the camera and gets re-formatted and only the SD card gets pulled and downloaded on the card reader. So I think it is brilliant.

  • @alyoshakaramazov8469
    @alyoshakaramazov8469 Před 9 měsíci +16

    Micro SD is used in many applications now, such as GoPro and other high performance ruggedized cameras. Loosing them is not an issue. So it is a great choice. My first Nikon was and FM2: I'm in the queue for a Zf. I also note that Zf is F2 spelled backwards, sort of, and I used F2 bodies for many years.

  • @starbase218
    @starbase218 Před 9 měsíci +31

    I think the micro SD slot is great. It's a backup in case you need it. And if you don't (99.99999% of the time), you can almost forget about the card being there in the first place.

    • @WidePhotographs
      @WidePhotographs Před 9 měsíci

      I agree, especially how cheap they are, you can put in a 512GB and won’t have to worry about it ever as a photographer. Unless you shoot video then a good chance you will need to review the footage found before formatting to create space.

    I love the retro aesthetics. It's the camera I wish Fuji would have made.
    I'm in Evelyn's camps as well. I think the Micro SD card is just fine. The smaller size keeps the camera body slim, and the second card avoids a lot of the complaints other cameras have received on launch, of just having one card.

    • @CianMcsweeney
      @CianMcsweeney Před 9 měsíci

      Why? Just cause it's full frame? I think it's a good effort, but they'll need to build a lens lineup to back it up, and maybe even come out with a Fuji X-E or X-Pro equivalent

    I want this camera and I have never used Nikon cameras. I think Nikon has made the perfect retro camera that doesn’t skimp on too many features. The body is also rugged with significant weather proofing. The Zf definitely ticks all the boxes for me, including the 24MP. Higher resolution sensors tend to get too noisy for my taste.
    If I had to start again, this would definitely be my street/travel camera and I would be using Nikon. I like it that much even without trying it out!
    The black and white setting is genius!
    Great job Nikon!
    Unfortunately I have a Sony system, and buying this camera would be only justified if I sold one of my camera bodies and used one of those excellent FE to Nikon Z adapters.

  • @danivar86
    @danivar86 Před 9 měsíci +9

    I think the Micro SD route is a great idea. I would look at it as an expandable internal drive that I never/rarely remove from the camera, and the write speed limitations vs CFExpress makes sense in a camera that's not targeted at sports and action - a very sensible differentiator from a future Z6 III camera that likely will have similar specs otherwise.

    It's cool to see the black and white switch.
    One of the things I love about mirrorless is how I can shoot in black and white raw+jpeg, so I see in black and white while I'm shooting, but all that colour information is still there in the file if I decide I want it later.
    If I didn't already have a perfectly good Z5 and Z6, I'd be on the preorder list for this camera.

    Thank you for the wonderful review!! Question: regarding the Zf vs S5 II (similar price points, 24MP, etc.), which would you recommend for primarily photos? Jordan (video centric) would say the S5 IIX 🙂. I currently have an FM3a (silver), X-T4, and X-H2, and I have shot L-Mount (SL2-S) and Z-Mount (Z6 II) and like them all. There are too many good choices out there right now. Lastly I am with Evelyn in that the Micro SD card doesn't bother me as a backup (I never take the SD card out of the X-H2).

    Good review as always; I enjoy your take on things.
    And... I would have also liked to have seen a bit more hands-on detail in the review with regards to the autofocus capabilities given it has an Expeed 7 processor. I'm quite curious what the differences are between the cameras given they have the same processor, a different number of autofocus points, and the ZF's lower resolution sensor.
    In general, I'm also curious how this compares to other competitive cameras like the a6700, A7CII, A7IV, R6II, S5II, etc. The ZF is about the best and latest in the mid range Nikon camera lineup, but I wonder if it will stack up to the competition outside of its je ne sais quoi.

  • @Willymaze
    @Willymaze Před 9 měsíci +6

    If Nikon was pushed on updating their first two mirrorless models shortly after just to put a secondary memory slot it is because it had a negative impact on sales and adoption rate, and this is clearly a professional camera and an upgrade from the Z6 II (of course there will be a Z6 III) disguised as an enthusiast/hobbyist model.
    Personally I prefer to have 2 slots even for personal everyday stuff and it's a nice to have.

    I have just replaced my Z6 with a Z6 mk2 and have preordered a Zf body. They will both go in my travel bag with my Z8 for my upcoming trip to Australia. All three bodies provide attributes that I can make use of and will enjoy using. For me the form factor of my memory cards doesn't matter, as long as they meet the required specs. Personally I have never had a card failure. I'm very much looking forward to getting my new Zf. I still like the feel of my Canon A1 and initially only moved to Nikon because they support legacy lenses.

    I’m curious to know about the 14 fps. I’ve heard “up to 14 fps”. What are the conditions/sacrifices you have to make? What is the real top fps without sacrifices?
    Related to that, the Z 6II has a weird “slideshow effect” when shooting 14 fps. I believe it’s there to hide the blackout. The Z 50 shoots at like 9fps without that effect. Has Nikon been able to mitigate that? No reviews have gone into that.
    Regardless, I’ve already pre-ordered and even have my SmallRig grip. I’m going to be happy with it to replace my Z 6II as a second camera to my Z 9.

    When I first heard about the slots, I was a bit put off, but the more I thought about it, the more I came around to it.
    The GoPro 10 shoots 5.6K and 4K120 to a v30 microSD card. The Z f should be able to handle that. I don’t think it’s possible in the Z 6II to max out a UHS-II card with 14 fps RAW stills. This camera just doesn’t need CFE performance.
    As for the size of the microSD card, I’m not planning to ever take it out unless it’s an emergency.
    If I use it as a backup, then I’ll shoot raw to the SD card and JPEG to the backup slot. I can use JPEGs in an emergency. And for overflow, I’ll make sure I have enough SD cards, and clear them off where overflow becomes an emergency situation.
    If that happens, I can plug the camera into USB-C and download that way. The microSD card never has to come out.
    I’m going to put a 512GB card in there and basically forget about it.

    I know you guys mentioned that this camera would probably be for a second body for pros but really it's for street photography, travel and content creators more than anything. If I was a dedicated street photographers or had the extra money to buy this just for street photography, I would do it. A lot of those guys like to use Fugi catered for that because of the size, weight and functionality with all the cool knobs. I think working photographers will wait on the z6 III. I shoot a lot of kids sports indoors, and like the great high ISO performance of the Z6II - just not the autofocusing and shutter lag that you get with the Z6II. I haven't heard it mentioned anywhere - does the lag exist here? was it a function of the sensor or the processor? I'd love to pre-order one to allow me to hand my Z6II down to my daughter, but need to know about the lag first...

      Ultimately, I think it is dependant on the type of shooting that you plan on doing. But, to allow for growth, I'd opt for the newer Zf - the Expeed 7 processor is getting great support. So many subtle interface differences that you'll have to figure out by putting the cameras in your hand to see what you like. As an example - the tilt vs the floppy screen is a big deal for some people, and others can work with whichever just fine... @@WidePhotographs

    The Micro SD card slot might be the perfect compromise for enthusiast cameras.
    One of the big upsell points of the R7 over the R10 for me was having dual card slots, if the R10 would have had secondary Micro SD memory then it might have pushed me to the cheaper body.
    Problem is Micro SD cards are VERY unreliable so it's not like you can go and fill your "dual cards" with 4K video and expect the Micro SD to act as a reliable backup, but just as an emergency JPEG holder it will do the trick nicely.

    Packs a lot of punch for the dollar. Micro doesn't bother me if used as an overflow & glad to have it there if needed before moving to putting another card in. For when using the AF if it has a 85% keeper rate or higher, I might try one. I don't want them to add it because of the retro thing but wish it had the Focus Stacking feature in it for Macro.

    I want one, and will buy at some point in the near future. I disagree that most people will only use one slot, I am a hobbyists and in my other cameras I use two... Worth having that added security even if it stays in the camera. At the end of the day two slots give the user the option.

    I've been using micro sd cards for over a decade and I haven't lost a single one. But I agree. When I do eventually buy this camera, I will probably only be using 1 card. If I do put a micro in there, It would probably be for backup and I'd just format it every time I backed up my files on my computer from the main SD card. I will never remove it unless I have to. I'm currently using a Z6 MKI and have no problem with one card.

    Everyone says that this is a great "second camera" that you can use for travel, and use the same lenses as on your regular, say, Z8.
    I just want one interchangeable camera, and I think many people think that way. My second camera is an RX100, or maybe even an iPhone. But photography isn't my job. It's something I do while traveling, or hiking (sometimes). So I wonder if the ZF is for me. For a guy who doesn't want a "second camera".

    100% agree with the mSD card assuming you can write to both at the same speed (speaking about photos, I am not a video person). I'd buy one and never take it out. It'd serve as the backup card. This is from a hobbyist perspective, though. But I also agree that I'd love a K1000 in functionality but with AF and a digital B&W sensor. Winder and all :) I wouldn't want to pay for it because I know it'd be a niche product.....

    I think the micro SD is great as the target for the JPEG files, and, as Evelyn stated, just leave it in there as a back up. The only thing better would be a large, internal memory, complementing a fast card storage. Eventually they will get there.

    Its been said a thousand times, just leave the small card inside as a backup memory, you just format it once you have saved your photos on your computer. It is a brilliant idea, when you consider non of the competitors give you a second SD card slot.

  • @oliverlane4050
    @oliverlane4050 Před měsícem

    I think the idea of the Micro SD is great, effectively internal storage which is how I treat the XQD in my Z8. My Mac has an SD slot (a little slower than XQD I know but am not bothered) which I use to transfer files from both cameras. I’m not shooting sports or wildlife so don’t need faster cards.

    I would have preferred a bulkier grip (thus allowing 2 full size sd cards), yes I know they wanted to keep it as close to the original SLR body, but people back then didn't think about ergonomics, I'm okay with it slightly off for be grip)

  • @alex-chicago-80
    @alex-chicago-80 Před 9 měsíci +1

    Everyone keeps talking about that memory slot. But you're just looking at the slot, the internals and housing for the slot is a lot more larger. There's no room to add it. Just look at your external card reader, it's pretty much the same as what you'll see inside the camera. It'll have meant adding a full on hand grip which takes away from the look and feel.

  • @obedbrinkman

    the micro SD card is so clever, you just buy one with much capacity and leave it in there as backup in case something goes wrong with the normal SD card

    the Zf is a piece of art and I love it

    It's funny that the big topic of discussion about the Nikon Zf happens to be about the storage situation with the Micro SD card and not the lack of a joystick.... But, on the hot topic. As long as you can use a fast, large-capacity Micro SD card, it's the same as having internal storage in my mind, and I could get down on that workflow. I think this camera is brilliant, personally.

    I 100% agree with Dave. Nikon should go all in and make their own version of Leica’s M10-D or the Epson RD-1. Give it an advance lever and make it so you have to cock the shutter. Take the screen off of it. An ovf would be awesome too but that might be asking for too much. I know this camera would never happen since the people who like those types of cameras will probably just buy Leica, but it’s nice to imagine it.

    I choose the Zf as a replacement for my Z6, also because of the microSD, or as someone has written, better a slow backup than no backup. And there are a couple of V30 cards around, which should easily fit for JPEG/HEIF backups on the second card. I'm glad getting away from the expensive XQD cards as a hobby photographer, as a pro I would likely think different, but would have gotten a Z6II (or higher) still.
    The retro style is nice to have, but the processor and mostly the enhanced AF is what triggered me. Recently got rid of all my AF-S DX stuff (and a few rarely used FX lenses too) so can afford the new one. Running with a Z50 mostly for hiking and a Zf for indoor, vacation and animals should leave me with no needs.

    Fully agree with Dave on the hypothesis that a retro camera with much less modern features would be more desirable. I'd prefer much smaller, simple menues, no video at all, etc... most of all I would only by the camera if Nikon would have more than just 2 lenses which kind of fit to the camera on offer. If I want stylish lenses for this I have to by the Voightlaenders.
