This is why I am getting into Overlanding actually. I have a "Reluctant Spouse". She is very much into the thought of traveling and camping. Hates it when I make purchases to increase the resiliency of our family... AKA prepping/being a responsible human being. Overlanding is a great opportunity to introduce the whole family to a massive amount of life skills that can be applied in the real world when an emergency happens. All without any resistance from the spouse.

For now I have been loading up on supplies with no complaints from her finally. lol Been planting fruit trees and expanding/planting the garden like my family's life depends on it.
In a serious SHTF situation(ie: ☢) it may be worthwhile to harden the taco against an EMP attack. I've heard mixed reviews as to how modern vehicles would be affected. At the very least, the most vulnerable parts of the truck would be the ECM/PCM and the sparkplug coil packs so carrying spare parts (visit a junkyard) in an EMP proof bag oughta keep ya moving. Either way, my taco never leaves home without a toolbox stocked with socket wrenches etc.
I've watched your channel for a while now, along with several others in similar genre. From day one your suggestions and gear are by the best ones I've seen and/or purchased. When I purchase things that you've suggested on your station I am always blown away and more than happy. Thank You for doing your videos and sharing all the information and equipment you have.
Great job. There’s some good information on this video. Especially for guys like me who are still in the “dream” phase of over landing. The way I understand it, is tell whoever asks whatever they want to hear, and build yourself a badass truck! Great!👍🏻
A most excellent video. I have had a few serious SHTF events in my life and we bugged out through most of them. It just makes sense that if you are somewhere getting flooded out or that has just had an earthquake or potential forest fire why hang around when you can just leave and come back when things are working again. Your advice about calling it overland verse Bugging Out is well advised. The only thing that I would add to this discussion is flash lights in particular Head Lamps are a huge help, A vehicle mounted first aid kit that you know how to use. That means knowing how to use the tourniquets , snake bit kit , quick clot, CPR mask if you have it. Tires are important and the weak part of the Bug out vehicle. Besides spare tires there could be a need to patch and that is a good kit to have and skill needed. Finally the buddy system is important. Two is one and one is none so if you can bug out with a buddy(Battle Buddy) you greatly increase your chances for a positive outcome. That is not just someone in the cab with you but a second vehicle. Thank you for the video I really enjoyed it and found it very provocative. :)
I have one of the Battery Tenders for my 2002 Chevy Silverado LT 4x4 Quad Cab Dually Long Bed pick-up truck that used to be my daily driver, but now is used only occasionally to haul home improvement / maintenance project materials and my 5th Wheel Travel Trailer. I used to have to call AAA out to jump start it once or twice a year. The guy who drives the jump-start / battery installation truck for AAA, suggested I get it. Works great, and the truck starts every time now. I just plug it into the trucks cigarette lighter and put the 14"X14" solar panel on the dash. Easy peasy lemon squeeze.

I had not seen the PowerFilm, that is a sweet solar panel. I would love to see a video of how you set it up as an awning, and maybe what devices that inverter will actually run.
So far the only person ive seen in my TONS of watching videos as a lurker, that accepted that varying needs of family's with "Special needs" from mentally challenged people, to infants etc. People need to think of that!
Pretty quick - it was stock most of its life. I had been saving for, and planning out all the things months in advance though. Worked with some companies to plan this and that and got some discounts here and there. But all said and done, I think the truck was pretty much stock still about 5 months ago. So everything you see done to it now was pretty much in the past 5 months.

Like the direction you are going in. Just started building a 4runner for overlanding\bugout and use the same excuse ! Would like to see more solar ,rack systems,storage so on . Nice informative vid! The solar awning sounds like a cool idea. I'm going to have to explore that idea. Maybe you could do a vid on your setup of the awning. Seems super practical for camping.
I think honestly if you where to need to bugout your feet is what your going to be left with, unless your building a bugout bulldozer or something. Any urban area would be a traffic jam. If your already live in a rural area then cool, you’ll get use out of a vehicle like this. But I love the Tacoma is awesome! Building something like that... any excuse works!! That’s just awesome!
Note that there are refrigerators that run on butane/propane gas, they don't really use that much gas either. There are models which can run on both gas, 12V or 115/230V, common in RV's and campers. Quite costly though. The budget version is of course a cooler which can run on 12V, you can keep it running while the car is running and shut it down when you stop and it'll still keep cool for hours (unless you're constantly opening it). Can get one of those for less than $100.
Hey Mike! Great info as usual. I learned a lesson re: solar generators. Bought a Enerplex 1200 couple yrs ago. Lithium, 12V charging, good performance. No longer working properly, out of warranty, co. got sold, no longer supported. $1300 down the drain. Fml. Just got Goal Zero. Would love inergy kodiak but way too $$$. Good comms info. I went ham and gmrs.
ham is great, and not too hard to get your license. Technically speaking you need to have a license for GMRS (the "twelve mile radio" you mention in the video). That barrier is much lower than ham but you still can't legally transmit without a license. 73's! - W9MZD
I like that Jackery setup but with the “generator” + panel you’re pushing $1,000! I always like the longer videos. Maybe a vid on balancing between a daily driver and a camping truck? I’m planning on a Tacoma but I’ll have to commute with it so I won’t want to go over the top. Functional but also halfway decent on the mpgs.
Yeah... There are certainly cheaper ways to go about it for sure. You're paying for the better quality, ease of use, level of finish/detail, warranty, and the 'just works' aspect of it all.
Your truck has a 400w power outlet built in, you didn't say anything about that..Most tacoma's come stock with it that other trucks dont.. Im sure you know that you just forgot to mention it, You will have to have your truck running for the 400w.. and 100w with truck not running
For backup power, I keep a DeWalt 1800 Power station (DCB1800B) in my Tundra. It uses my power tool battery packs for power storage. This also allows me to have the capability of using power tools when off the trail as well as power other larger appliances. Check it out.

A year or so late to the party, so not sure if you'll see this, but- I'm live about 80/20 in Denver/Hartsel and just bought my first truck, a 2014 Ford Raptor. My previous vehicles were all Subarus, ending with manual Forester XT. I don't know much about trucks, but I'm starting to learn. I want to build the Raptor into a daily/overland/bug out do-it-all hybrid. Do you have any recommendations for what I should start with on the build, especially being in the mountains? Thanks!

I would say you have an overland rig in all honesty it’s just the way you use said tool you generally go camping with it which I would consider overlanding. As far as I know you don’t have a doomsday bunker.
I’m glad you talked about tires being the first upgrade you can have the best vehicle in the world but with no traction your not getting anywhere. Since I work at a tire store I’ll list a few of the most common A/T tires we sell, first and by far the BFG KO2’s are an excellent tire good for off road and fairly quite for hwy driving, next I’d say the Goodyear Duratracs, and Hankook Dynapros, General Grabber, or Firestone Destination A/Ts, and Michelin LTX AT2s are very popular. As mud tires goes there is tons of option like Firestone M/Ts, Mickey Thompson’s, Nitos are good too, since mud tire tread are more “paddle” like they might not be right depending on what kind of terrain you live in. There are niche products too like Bridgestone Revo 2 and 3s that are all terrain but still quite on hwy and tires like the Firestone Transforce A/T2’s that have more plys on for a stiffer more durable tire. By no means are these the best option just the ones I see a lot of. Do a lot of research into which tire best fits your needs and pay attention to different LOAD RANGEs too, the same tire could have a $50 dollar different per tire because of how much weight the tire can handle and take that into account for the amount of gear and people your going to be putting on your ride. And if your going away from OEM tires sizes look into lift kits or leveling kits to give your tires extra room so no rubbing or binding happens, and remember performance over looks all day long! Save the cool factor for your rims! Happy over landing 👍
Also, the lithium comment was a bit inaccurate. Lithium stays in a useable voltage range longer, but when it finally loses voltage it loses it FAST and you MUST STOP USING IT and charge it or you WILL PERMANENTLY DAMAGE a lithium battery.
Never use the terms related to prepping or bugout... it is none of their damn business. I just tell them I like to camp. The stupidest thing you can do when prepping is to advertise.
This for the tailgate - amzn.to/2IHN7GY Then there are some gaps at the front of the bed that you'll either need to caulk/silicone and/or use a combination of the weatherstripping or other stuff jammed into places to fill the gaps. There are some other voids in the rear bottom of the tailgate that you can silicone. Then the storage bins are the other issue, since they have open holes for the latches. I haven't sealed those off, so my tailgate isn't completely sealed. The cover itself should be pretty good to go, but I did add a tiny more weatherstripping near where the hinges are on the diamondback. But no, I haven't made a video on it.
According to the FCC: It is legal to use a ham radio or ANY radio to prevent the loss of life or serious property damage. IE: to warn of forest fire, avalanche, wounded person, vehicle stuck in a low water crossing with rising water, active shooter, etc. If you are in genuine fear for your life, and a reasonable person (police officer, judge, or jury) would confirm that fear as valid, or prepared to abandon your home or vehicle or RV in conjunction with a similar fear or to flee natural disaster, etc, it is legal to use any ham radio to call for help. Regardless of license.
Another practical thing to consider when buy a truck/suv knowing its going to be your bug out vehicle is not a bad idea to consider something common so if you break down there are some of the same vehicles on the road you can take parts off of in the proper situation (not condemning steeling but things will happen in that situation)
Yeah dude, I don't know if it was the youtube algorithm but I got into overlanding a little after I found your channel and before you got big into it. I am a skills and function based prepper and gun guy so I believe in learning the skills and whatever stuff you buy should for the most part have a function in your daily life where ever possible. Plus you hit the nail on the head in the beginning, if you tell people you're into overlanding they think that's interesting. If you tell people you're a prepper they basically shun you unless they're also a prepper.....
A few miles simplex? How many watts? Thats a tiny little antenna for a few miles... with a 30inch antenna on a 10 watt radio I can usually only get about 2.5 miles give or take depending on the terrain

I would say you have an overland rig in all honesty it’s just the way you use said tool you generally go camping with it which I would consider overlanding. As far as I know you don’t have a doomsday bunker.

I’m glad you talked about tires being the first upgrade you can have the best vehicle in the world but with no traction your not getting anywhere. Since I work at a tire store I’ll list a few of the most common A/T tires we sell, first and by far the BFG KO2’s are an excellent tire good for off road and fairly quite for hwy driving, next I’d say the Goodyear Duratracs, and Hankook Dynapros, General Grabber, or Firestone Destination A/Ts, and Michelin LTX AT2s are very popular. As mud tires goes there is tons of option like Firestone M/Ts, Mickey Thompson’s, Nitos are good too, since mud tire tread are more “paddle” like they might not be right depending on what kind of terrain you live in. There are niche products too like Bridgestone Revo 2 and 3s that are all terrain but still quite on hwy and tires like the Firestone Transforce A/T2’s that have more plys on for a stiffer more durable tire. By no means are these the best option just the ones I see a lot of. Do a lot of research into which tire best fits your needs and pay attention to different LOAD RANGEs too, the same tire could have a $50 dollar different per tire because of how much weight the tire can handle and take that into account for the amount of gear and people your going to be putting on your ride. And if your going away from OEM tires sizes look into lift kits or leveling kits to give your tires extra room so no rubbing or binding happens, and remember performance over looks all day long! Save the cool factor for your rims! Happy over landing 👍

Also, the lithium comment was a bit inaccurate. Lithium stays in a useable voltage range longer, but when it finally loses voltage it loses it FAST and you MUST STOP USING IT and charge it or you WILL PERMANENTLY DAMAGE a lithium battery.

Then there are some gaps at the front of the bed that you'll either need to caulk/silicone and/or use a combination of the weatherstripping or other stuff jammed into places to fill the gaps. There are some other voids in the rear bottom of the tailgate that you can silicone. Then the storage bins are the other issue, since they have open holes for the latches. I haven't sealed those off, so my tailgate isn't completely sealed. The cover itself should be pretty good to go, but I did add a tiny more weatherstripping near where the hinges are on the diamondback.

According to the FCC: It is legal to use a ham radio or ANY radio to prevent the loss of life or serious property damage. IE: to warn of forest fire, avalanche, wounded person, vehicle stuck in a low water crossing with rising water, active shooter, etc. If you are in genuine fear for your life, and a reasonable person (police officer, judge, or jury) would confirm that fear as valid, or prepared to abandon your home or vehicle or RV in conjunction with a similar fear or to flee natural disaster, etc, it is legal to use any ham radio to call for help. Regardless of license.

Another practical thing to consider when buy a truck/suv knowing its going to be your bug out vehicle is not a bad idea to consider something common so if you break down there are some of the same vehicles on the road you can take parts off of in the proper situation (not condemning steeling but things will happen in that situation)
Must be nice to be able to have all that stuff on and in your truck, where I live everything would get stolen.

Yeah dude, I don't know if it was the youtube algorithm but I got into overlanding a little after I found your channel and before you got big into it. I am a skills and function based prepper and gun guy so I believe in learning the skills and whatever stuff you buy should for the most part have a function in your daily life where ever possible. Plus you hit the nail on the head in the beginning, if you tell people you're into overlanding they think that's interesting. If you tell people you're a prepper they basically shun you unless they're also a prepper.....
A few miles simplex? How many watts? Thats a tiny little antenna for a few miles... with a 30inch antenna on a 10 watt radio I can usually only get about 2.5 miles give or take depending on the terrain
