This cat Kendrick Scott on drums is soooooo sick! I heard Art Blakey, then I heard him scratch like DJ, then the band went into a Hancock-esque vamp and started the cycle, and I loved every TASTY DAMN MINUTE OF IT! This is the real thang!
I was there for this... KADS represented that "H". But honestly... he's pure spirit. I've always loved his sincerity with the instrument. Its rare these days to fine a great musician that is an awesome individual and looking to expand their conscience to that higher level that includes everyone instead of excluding everyone.
Holy Cow, these guys take flight @ around 4:30, and then Scott takes it even higher at about 5:30! Scott drives the band right thru to about 8:00 . . . In the zone, free-flight, flowww-in! Jazz at its best! AWESOME!!
No words... best drummer I’ve heard. It’s not just the technical wizardry. He’s singing with the rhythms. So much soul. Every drum is gorgeous on its own and together. Just. Godly.
We’re seeing one of the Jazz greats here. Mike Moreno is another we are witnessing burn through these great jazz sounds. I was lucky enough to see them once together. Hopefully Mike plays with Kendrick at the Nate Holden theater in October so lightning can strike twice for me.
Ok so... i believe that is Steve Smith with his wife at min 10:00!!!!! What a life... "Yeah,... Steve and his wife came out to watch my show, we had a long chat after the gig about the wine selection.."
Got to sit a few feet away from him last year when he played the Green Mill in Chicago with Kurt Elling. A top 10 musical experience of my life - and not because of Kurt.
Wow, I had no idea who I was meeting when I meet you the other day at Rockin Robin. You are one very talented guy. I pray God's blessing on you and your family and much more success!
Hector Alonso From an Interview with Kendrick: "...Chris Dave who I’ve admired since I was a kid... I knew Chris before I knew Eric, I’ve been watching Chris since I was eight or nine years old ". Chris Dave is actually quite old and THE MAN. You see here Chris' influence on Jazz drumming. lifeandtimes.com/jazz-drummer-kendrick-scott-speaks-on-new-album-conviction
I used to mess around with upside down snare drum 40 years ago, although not nearly as well as KSO, and twice my stick went right through the head. Wallet made me stop.
Anyone know what that fill is called at 6:30? Or what rudiment he uses? Been hearing that lick a lot lately and it's bugging me cause I can't really figure it out.
Nah its push pull, so you kind of let the stick drop (do give a little push with your wrist) and then you close your fingers (still relaxed) which gives you two notes. Then he pretty much repeats it infinitely 😂✌️
I wish I could have even 5% of that cymbal technique. Sure...I can practice and play like mad and get something like that....but I'll never practice my way to having THAT exact touch. What a monster.
most people would simply call it modern jazz; other players in this style would be artists like Seamus Blake, Robert Glasper, Gerald Clayton, Gretchen, etc.

Joe Sanders on bass, Taylor Eigsti on Keys, John Ellis on sax, Mike Moreno on guitar

This comment kills me because it’s completely true. I wish I could have been there.

It's not the kit. It is the great drummer manipulating the kit to sound so good.

Tasty!
kendrick the only hipster that is actually special
You use TWO coated heads on both sides of the snare?!
01:36 Kurt Elling on sax
Can someone explain what type of stroke is Kendrick Scott is using to play those single hand 16th note patterns on the ride? Is that moeller?
Nah its push pull, so you kind of let the stick drop (do give a little push with your wrist) and then you close your fingers (still relaxed) which gives you two notes. Then he pretty much repeats it infinitely 😂✌️
Is that Mike Moreno?
Yes.
what do you call this subgenre of jazz?
Post Modern Jazz?
7:58 wooo
That snare drum rules. Anyone know what make/model it is?
Sorta looks like a noble and cooley, maybe???

what snare is that? aluminum?
Looks like a Dunnett cast aluminum or titanium
Tommy Gunn Dunnett titanium, the tone is crazy consistent. It sounds exactly like it does on the record.
"Blushda"
Holy guacamole
you can fool some of the people some of the time but you can't fool all the people all the time
Jazz or drum evolution
So far I may be 100 of these views. When you hit 300,00 I might be 100,000 of those views trying to learn the drum parts.
Buddy Rich would have been impressed
most people would simply call it modern jazz; other players in this style would be artists like Seamus Blake, Robert Glasper, Gerald Clayton, Gretchen, etc.
Aaron Parks?
