  • This lecture is part of the computer graphics rendering course at TU Wien. It explains the Monte Carlo algorithm for integrating high dimensional functions, how to compute the variance of such estimators, and how to reduce it by employing importance sampling. It then goes on to apply this new knowledge by implementing an ambient occlusion and a direct lighting renderer.

ERRATA: In slides 116 and 126, we used "rendering[y][x]" to address pixels, when it should have been "rendering[py][px]" instead.

In 8:59, the probability does not guarantee to integrate to 1, but the probability density must integrate to 1.

I'm not hurting cats! I'm just showing what could happen if you do the wrong thing ;)
