@@puneetkashyap5802 of course! You’ll have to go to your local Auslanderbehörde to get more information on what specifically you will need for your case. 🙂
@Bestill Findrest ahhh Cape Town 🥰 a beautiful city - you’re right for loving it there! I did too!! And if there’s one thing I’ve still not gotten used to here it’s the unfriendliness of some 😞
I am very shocked about the 10 days vacation time per year. Unbelivable. I think that's why I never met a canadian citizen anywhere.
Artjom Maier 😂😂 ... if you’re with a company for a long time or you find a great one, you might get lucky and start with more! But many people, like myself, started with 10 days!
@@lifeingermany_ how is life then, if you are not able to live your life, when you can only sleep and work? We in germany live for our vacation and after the 2 or 3 weeks off, we counting the days to have another week or two off. I would die, if I hat NO TIME or only 10 days for me 😵
nuu-ya hahaha it really did burn me out! I’m so thankful to be living in Germany now!
In the US, we don't even have a guaranteed amount of vacation time. White collar workers will get 10-15 days, but poor workers basically only get time off via unpaid days, which is obviously difficult.
If you are in shock, you should know in Mexico, we only have 6 days of vacation (+10 holidays) this is the moment when you can cherish your vacation.
7:00 when I was still at the office in Munich I had to write down every day the time I came and the time I left into an Excel sheet, and it calculated the hours. Every month I printed the sheet and gave the paper to my supervisor and when the account had more than 50 hours more than I had to work, she said: "You need to take a day off or I will go to jail". Now THAT's what I call work-live-balance!!
I hear what ur saying here in Canada like the small towns if u do a job u can add extra hours if the company and staff dont care. In the night i should be working 10 hours but sometimes we work 6 or 8 hours but we put 10 hours instead they dont care.
@ullistein i have heard once that in some european country probably spain someone was fired because they worked more than office hours 🙄
Not by my Chef, too much work is still not enough for him.
I’m really amazed of Canada’s Landscapes and Nature and I hope I can visit the country one day
Yep same here, our boss gets a bit shirty when the Überstunden reaches a certain level, it’s then a case of “ can you take a day off or go earlier ?”
Yes, by law, we couldn't work more than 10 hours a day and have to level it down to 8 hours a day in average over a 6 months' period. If you as an employee work longer hours than that, your boss is made responsible, as well.
Of course, there are always bad bosses, who tell you to work more but only report 10 hours - but that should be a red flag for you and for you to start looking for a new job.
I'm from Toronto and have lived abroad in Europe as well, and I always get asked the same question. My european friends can't understand why I prefer life on this side of the pond, but I agree with all of the points you made! I MUCH prefer the work/life balance here, I feel like I could never go back. It's so stress free in comparison and the proximity to so many other countries/cultures is priceless!
I am also a canadian who lives in Germany. OK, Iwe moved to Germany when I was 11 and now I am 66. I still am Canadian because I never wanted to give up my Canadian being. But I think Germany offers me a lot more. But on the other hand my "heart" is still canadian.
I couldn’t have said it better myself 🥰✊
When I move to Germany I’m probably gonna get rid of my American being 😂✌🏼

As someone who ditched Germany in favour of Canada and never looked back it has been interesting listening to the contrarian view. For me, Canada has worked better. There are many reasons that make Canada better, including some that you mentioned as a plus for Germany. It's personal perception. I grew up in Munich and left it for Southwestern Ontario.
I’d love to watch a video of this one day! I find it so interesting to see the other side of the picture! I wonder if there’s any vloggers from germany in Canada talking about this!

Love watching your video's. I am living in The Netherlands (actually around 20 minutes from where you were camp-site in Heemskerk). I visited Canada numerous times (mostly BC and AB). I do find Canada a beautiful country for visiting, but for me I love living in Europe. So many different cultures so easy to travel around and so much history. Thank you so much for your absolute real Video because this you didnt hear anywhere and i tell you the same Words what i recieving when i was moving to Canada 12 Years ago:
„Welcome to our Country, feel welcome and enjoy your stay“
Hey, Jenna great video as I'm also a Canadian from T.O. (born and raised) and have been in Europe since 1988, came over playing pro hockey in Austria,Italy,Switzerland and then in Germany. I can relate to a lot to what you've said in your Vlog but find Germany can be very different depending on where you live. I'm in the south in Bavaria which does has a different mentality to the north but what you mentioned about traffic is so true in T.O. was back 4 years ago and said this is crazy!!! I love the Autobahn feeling and traveling at 200 klicks and someone flashes their lights telling you to get over makes look like you're standing still......haha!!! I have two teenage Kids I have been there and done and it does get easier, so keep up the good work really enjoyed hearing our none Canadian accent again......LOL Cheers!!!
So useful,thank u so much
Hello Jenna, You have this channel and your Life in Dusseldorf channel down pat. I love how you explain the information in a clear teachable way. As you know I have watched your latest videos as I just found you a couple of weeks ago but I decided I am going to start from the beginning and"watch up" to catch up lol. BTW, Again I am an American from the state of Florida originally but sometimes I find great flight deals out of Toronto. My last flight out of Toronto cost me $303. 00 USD so it was with it to make my way to Toronto for sure. Great work Jenna. :).
Torontonian in Berlin here! I can completely agree with what you mentioned!
Hey, love to hear that, you also in love in Germany 🇩🇪. I moved 26 years ago to Montreal I didn’t like life style there then I moved to Toronto about 20 years ago I myth like Toronto 🇨🇦 work so soooooo hard, but still I don’t like here I don’t know what to do man? I am just thinking to move back there because Toronto getting extremely expensive foods and hosing market is crazy 😜 you’re absolutely right I hundred percent agree with you. Good luck with your new life there. I have my family lives Kolon.

I’m from Toronto. I moved here, with my German wife in 1982 thinking 2 years or so and then back to Canada… still here!
i appreciate your work
good video. you seem to have success on YT. Best wishes and more subs for you!
A well produced Video with good content. Watching these German expat videos always makes me homesick (The family left Germany when I was 16) Yes it always shocks me how empty (sometimes) the 2 lane German highways are compared to the 16 lane 401. Talk about the North American grind , I took the train from Oakville to Union and worked on Bay Street - it's stressful. My wife and i took early retirement and are thinking of moving to Germany for 2-3 months. Düsseldorf is on the list, but so is the Stuttgart area. Anyways how's your German after 6 years. Greetings from back home.

Just think how many people (including myself) would kill for a EU passport
LOL, 10 days vacation ... if I don't get at least 30 days, then they have to find another employee ;)
😝 right?! 30 days is a dream for most Canadians!
@@lifeingermany_ Funny how you said that most Germans have 25 days vacation. I belive 24 days is the minimum by law, and most employees have at least 30 days or a few more. Plus you can have additional days of if you worked over time and have a plus on your "Stundenkonto"
@@matteloht I think it's just 20, but in reality, many, like myself get 30 days. Funnily enough, I personally could use more - in a normal year, not this one. A lot goes to covering parents ' birthdays and stuff like that 😁
@@Xnhl Just looked it up "Der gesetzliche Mindesturlaub beträgt 24 Tage pro Jahr, das sind fast fünf Wochen. Jein. Zwar ist im Bundesurlaubsgesetz (BUrlG) in Paragraf 3 von mindestens 24 Werktagen Urlaub die Rede. Diese Bestimmung geht aber von einer Sechs-Tage-Woche aus"

Thank you for a most interesting perspective on german culture and society! I lived in Toronto 30 years ago and it was brutal! Even then, to rent a house, my friend's family and mine had to share. I agree with almost everything you said apart from the summer temperatures in Germany. I also live in Düsseldorf and the summers are unbareable! The temperatures are never below 29 degrees and most times its between 30 to 40 degrees. It always hot and sticky with barely no wind blowing. A real nightmare! I can understand you thinking its lovely if you experienced worse summers in Canada but the summer here is sinply aweful!! That said great video!
As the German half of a Canadian-German married couple - partially living here (outside of Munich) and there (Niagara Region) - I absolutely agree!!! Great insight - keep posting - look forward to more interesting videos 👍
Traffic in and around Toronto is a dimension of it's own and hardly comparable to any other place
of course because people flock from all over the GTA and even further to work in TO. There are already over 3 million in TO, over 6 million in the GTA, and even more if you add other surrounding areas. On top of that most immigrants choose the GTA
Indeed !! I've travelled in GTA a lot as a truck driver but outside of there for the most part in Canada, traffic is close to non existing. Beside the other major cities, that is.
Lucky you to be so young, enjoy it.
Your view is very interesting to me.
I am Canadian, live in California and travel in Europe. You are so right about the work life balance. In the US and Canada 10 days vacation when you start a job is pretty standard and you are made to feel you are lucky you have the job. There's so much consumerism that everyone has to work a lot to support their 'retail fix' habits.
🤣
You are spot on the points and all my feelings are similar, why is Canada so bad. I made a switch to Canada from Germany and I just can't wait to move back to Germany. Any small town is far better than any Good town/city is Germany. And Düsseldorf is beautiful!
Thank-you Jenna for your videos I so appreciate them! I am a Canadian visiting my Aunt and Uncle in Cape town for three months. Did you rent a vehicle when traveling SA? After this I'll be an Au pair in Germany for a year and am so looking forward to it. For people wanting to know a little more about Canada I am from Saskatchewan where cities are small. The rural area is very affordable you can buy a small house for 25 thousand. I worked in healthcare where you can bank time to have more holidays. There are some jobs that work 12 hour shifts and then you have more days to do as you wish. There are so many jobs! However our winters are brutal.
Also when I have visited family in Toronto I'm a tad overwhelmed by the lifestyle it's so busy and seems like a chore to get your kids to all the places they need to be.
It was also my dream to live in Canada. Now after over 10 years in Canada (Alberta) I would love to move back to Europe. Just a few of the many reasons: food quality, progressiveness, democracy (Canada is not as democratic as you think), conservatism (love and support of oil and gas), general quality and cost for all items (appliances, clothing, food, restaurants, etc.), houses are very very bad (technology, built, design). I could go on but moving to Canada was one of my biggest mistakes. Sorry to say that.
No need to apologize! All super valid points that id have to agree with!!
@@lifeingermany_ Yes, unfortunately. Most shocking to me is the racism especially regarding First Nation people. Really makes me sad.
I have the impression that North-America is stuck in the past and not willing to adapt to the changes or even be part of it.
I am glad you are happy where you are!
I've really been leaned on by the non progressiveness of everything... It's not a strength... it's really a weakness of people emotionally dependent on someone to blame. Aafter it happens. I always wonder if it's better in Germany. If someone told me it was, I'd consider leaving 🙈 even if it was a lot more expensive. I could be biased but... I find most people are oilfield and drink too much. To be honest my standard of a person has dropped to... Do they touch Children... No .... Alright, guess there okay. But with the oilfield a surprising amount of people have DUI or drug issues, but... I'm surprised how far reaching this norm is. Although it is Alberta... There is either people that are conservative and gaslight random people traditionally or liberal people that gaslight conservatives. Is Germany the same way? I get really sad looking online to best quality of life countries and Canada is number 2... 😔
@@inejunta6569 I think you have to find peace in yourself first and the the way will open. We are taking our problems with us and moving to a foreign country adds a ton of more problems.
Finished school in Onterrible or maybe worst case Ontario 😂 Just picked up a few jokes when I was in Alberta 😂
I'm a German and I want to immigrate to Canada since I'm a little child. I really hope there's not too much disappointment in this video for me, but since I've lived there a couple times already, I think I'm prepared for the most part 😃 Happy that you like it here in Germany though :)
Don’t move from Germany!
Thank you for the video! Please do more like this! I live in America and deciding whether to move to Germany. Also don't you take public transportation instead of car in Germany to avoid the traffic?
Thanks so much! I will start to get some more up online soon! 🤗🤩 Haha - yes, many people choose public transport over driving a car, but not all! And it depends on whether you live in the city or a small town. The cities in Germany are usually very easy to get around with just public transport! 🤩🤗
Here in Australia, most people working permanent full- or part-time get 20 working days per year. In many cases, we also get paid a 17.5% salary loading for the holiday/vacation period. This was originally for all workers in the aforementioned categories, but since then, some unions have traded that off for other benefits. The only people who don't get paid leave at all are what we call casual workers, who only get paid by the hour, although they get a higher hourly amount to offset the lack of vacation/holiday pay. To top it off, we also get long service leave, ie three months paid leave for working for the same employer for ten years. If we keep working for that same employer, we receive an extra month for every three years as long service leave. This does not, however, get paid with the previously-mentioned loading.
Would it be possible to make a video about postgraduate studies (like getting a PhD) in Germany. Maybe also compare it with Canada
Very nice content.
Icrible, I am Brasilian and I no imagined who German compared to Canada is very best, but I love the two countries 🇩🇪🇧🇷🇨🇦
The dairy board in Canada make sure that the price of dairy products are kept artificially high to protect the farmers and protected them from competition.
Yes it is for weather mainly
nice and persuasive, thinking of migrating to canada as a farmer that's my profession, dont know much about Germany, hopefully would like to look in that direction, hoping to hear more from in that direction ,thanks for the update.
Interesting! I grew up in France close to German border and move to Canada (Montreal) 10 years ago. Vacation starts at 15 days which is becoming more standard and with time/experience you can reach 20 days. Yes travelling takes time here as the country is big. However I find Canada more welcoming for visible minorities...better job and opportunities prospects
I also agree that Canada can be ALOT more welcoming! And that’s muuuuch better than 10 days! I should have moved to Montreal 🙈 not so far from Toronto!
@@lifeingermany_ Thanks for your reply. and good to see you found your happiness in Germany. In the end of the day that’s what matters :). Good luck on everything.
I actually am a German expat who eventually wants to go back to Germany but since I haven't found any channels of German expats returning a & talking about their experience, I watch other people from other countries on their life in Germany. Obviously some things won't be the same cause for me it will be easier getting in to the country, registering, finding a job but videos like yours help me get prepared for adult life in Germany cause I left Germany barely after my 18th birthday so I have 0 experience of adult life in Germany. Also it helps me to get prepared for reversed cultural shocks cause as a child/teen there's a lot of stuff you're unaware of. I am really grateful for channels like yours.

I have been enjoying watching your videos in preparation for our return ☺️
A lot of the free days are company/state dependent. At a job I had to hold for a while, even though it was EU, we were working 12 hour days, 6 days a week, with hardly any breaks. They did pay us a lot of overtime, but one can imagine that all the vacation days were used as sickness leaves, as sickness leaves would result in termination. It depends on the company and their ability to manage it’s workforce. We cost the company more than double what hiring more employees would, and still they could not get new workers onboard.
Take me there!
Germany is very nice nice country. The people are very good. Thank you for this share. Hello from Croatia
I worked in Toronto for a while as a network engineer in a data center for a german software company back in 2017. I talked to a lot of locals during my stay and due to my experiences there I can confirm most of your statements.

Lemon Haze I LOVE it here now 🥰🤗 thank you! I also write about the city on www.lifeinduesseldorf.com
@@lifeingermany_ They do have some really good and spicy mustard there (Düsseldorfer Löwensenf - Extra Scharf) and Düsseldorf Alt to wash it down!!
Good 👍
Iam living in Luxembourg 🇱🇺
Moving back to Germany after living 20 years in the United States. I’ve been watching your videos to get reminded of life in Germany, lol. I hope it won’t be too much of a culture shock 😌 we’re moving to Cologne and hope to meet Expats there 🥳
Welcome, it’s nice to look into the Mirror you showed us. Canada is really a dream country to live in for many Germans. A place of longing. But you showed us that every thing has more than one dimension. Thank you, you are such a nice person. Keep on making videos.
Thanks so much for the kind response! 🥰 Yes - you’re right! Canada is a wonderful country, but there’s no much more that people don’t see when they’re just VISITING! I really found the perfect work/life balance here in Germany! 🤗
ich war in Kanada und den USA, können mich beide mal, da fahr ich lieber in die Schweiz, genauso teuer, dichter drann und manche da sprechen auch etwas deutsch....
People come to Canada for our beautiful scenery but believe me, our cities suck compared to German cities. And we have a work work work mentality. You guys don't know how lucky you are!
I mean there are some beautiful cities like Calgary and Vancouver which have world class beauty and nature. But the work culture is terrible - no time to enjoy life, the weather in any place outside the west coast is terrible, is much more expensive than germany, and not as well connected as some other countries. There are definitely good things like its pretty low crime although germany might be even better here, nice people, very diverse - you can be anyone in the world and you will fit in.
@@Unterwelten when i was a kid i always used to dream about US and Canada but as i grew older (now 38) i started to value more and more the life here in Germany when compared to especially US
But still i'd love to visit Canada one day but before that NYC is on the top list
Hello from Toronto 🖐 i am sure you didn’t miss ower here 😅 specifically around this time of the year ... 😬
I am watching and following your video and really enjoying . I am planning to move Germany this year my girlfriend is lives there. I am Canadian citizen she is German citizen . I heard its really hard to get married in Germany. Can you share your experience or make a videos how did go yours like paperwork time frame vs... . 😊 thanks again for all your useful videos...
Hey there! 🙃 thanks for your message! Great idea about making a video - for a quick answer - it depends on where you come from. However, as a Canadian marrying a German, I have to say... it was actually really easy!
Biggest tip: GET YOUR LONG FORM CANADIAN BIRTH CERTIFICATE WHILE YOURE STILL IN CANADA
I didn’t know there was a difference between my original certificate and a “long form” one... and you’ll need to request a stamped copy from the officials in Canada. A much quicker process when you’re still in Canada.
Then you’ll need to get it translated by a certified professional in Germany (this is quick and easy).
The rest is just quite a bit of paperwork, but not difficult by any means! 🙃
Hope this helps a little for now!
@@lifeingermany_ thank you all the information 🙏
Ich stimme dir zu!
