I remember my mum and dad talking about siphoning gas from each others cars so they'd have gas in the car that was allowed to drive that day during the gas shortage. If flatmates had the same day selected for being the day they wouldn't use their car, they'd be buggered. Out in the country where they all lived it was a good 20km to get to work, so you'd sometimes need to use your neighbors car, and fill it up with your cars petrol. Definitely a strange time.
Muldoon is putting on an American accent
Yeah definitely to some extent, but David Lange at the famous Oxford Union debate also had this weird accent. It's really just a kiwi spin on the "Transatlantic Accent" that many world leaders, newsreaders etc used to put on at the time.
Just sounded like Muldoon to me.
Bolger was the one who did accents.
Very embarrassing man.
Maybe that's just how he sounds whne he's actually sober
That's just NZRP man. All the old-timer news readers still do it today
Loved by half the population of New Zealand and hated by the other half, which admittedly was the half I was in, at the time. Muldoon was a divisive leader, but led the last government to represent the interests of the people of New Zealand.
The fall of New Zealand began in1984 with the government of David Lange and is nearing completion under the thumb of Jacinda Ardern.
Long live democracy.
Long live freedom.
You are so right. I am a Kiwi and live in New Zealand and have the date 25 July 1984 engraved on all the walls of my bedroom. The last day of New Zealand.
@@man8785 the last day of a dictator couldn't go gracefully as Sir John Marshall. Wouldn't accept the number ten seat as Sir Keith and Sir John had done. Sir Robert had nine years as leader and possibly nine weeks would have been enough.
I was about 6 months old at the time, so I can't remember.
Reagan is my friend.
Mmm. The protocol of putting the visiting PM's body infront of the President's body when the car approaches is clearly not without reason. Expendable body guard, maybe?
He's pissed!
Unfortunately Mr. Muldoon was mauled to death by a Velociraptor in 1993, 12 years after this speech.
Two true statesmen
Making friends and insuring I have a job at the end of the NZ snap election in which Im about to lose.
We all regret things we did when we were drunk, but have you ever called a snap election while being pissed off your face?
Snap election was three years later, 1984.
