    Very nice review. You basically touched upon all the things I needed to know. Is i5 sufficient? Fan-less? Does this run hot?

  • @AquaStevae
    @AquaStevae Před 4 lety +8

    I just upgraded from a SP4, and it's a pretty significant upgrade. I'm also going from the i5 on the SP4, to an i7 on the SP7, and from 8gb ram to 16gb. So I expect this machine to feel lightyears ahead of what I was using. Put those things together with the tenth gen processors, better thermals, faster graphics and much better IO, and I'm feeling pretty good about everything. I really, really, REALLY wanted the SPX. But as good as it looks, performance is EVERYTHING, and an ARM chip is a deal breaker. Maybe in two years...

    • @Raminmj
      @Raminmj Před 2 lety +1

      Well ARM on windows still sucks after 2 years...

    • @Cooe.
      @Cooe. Před 2 lety +1

      Ooff... Might not have been the best choice on the SKU there. The i7 on the SP7 was a MASSIVE rip-off!!! Unlike previous gens of Intel CPU's both the 10th Gen i7's AND the i5's have full "SMT" or what Intel calls "hyper-threading" support, meaning i5's & i7's are BOTH 4-core/8-thread CPU's! (And thus in terms of raw CPU performance the 10th Gen i5's & i7's are basically IDENTICAL [the latter just has ever so slightly higher clock-speeds.... that's it]).
      Every generation before that had the i5's WITHOUT SMT, meaning they were only 4-core/4-thread CPU's and thus significantly slower than the i7's! With 10th Gen though? The only major upgrade on the i7's was now the bigger Iris iGPU with the full 64x "EU's" ("Execution Units", think Nvidia's "SM's" or AMD's "CU's") versus "just" 48x of them on the i5's. That said, the i7's iGPU performance isn't +25% better like you'd expect from the sheer +25% iGPU size increase, but only more like +10-20% sadly. Making getting the pricier & fan requiring i7 model even more silly.
      The ONLY reason I can see where the SP7 (& 7+/8 too) i7 models make ANY kind of sense are for those that will be regularly running long length (>=5-10min) 100% system load workloads like video or CG rendering. And the reason to get the i7 ISN'T the bare/y faster chip itself BUT the inclusion of active cooling with a fan! That will help it SIGNIFICANTLY with avoiding thermal throttling for those really long 100% load tasks.

    Did they finally upgrade the Wi-Fi chip? I absolutely love my SP6, but one thing that some users have complained about for the last few gens is the Wi-Fi chip (or maybe it's just the processor) particularly with Windows Updates and installing apps/updates. Browsing is fast, but installing/updating takes forever.

    I still don't understand why Microsoft goes so slow regarding updates on the SP. Yes, there are improvements but they are not enough for you to say "woa, they nailed it!" They are more like unavoidable updates, not really new significant updates. Migrating to a more recent Bluetooth, for instance, should be a given not something I should be thankful! In the end, consumers end-up buying it because they are used to, they are tired of waiting for THE one and finally want to have/use a SP....or simply they do not buy it and wait another year. Worst, now, they have shown SP X, which demonstrate that great changes can be done (bezels, pen solution, size), disregard of what's under the hood. Why should we accept the dated looks! Sorry Daniel, not even you seem that excited with the SP7.

    I find it funny that people still complain about Thunderbolt 3. From a business and user perspective TB3 has been a total marketing disaster. First lets start with the fact that Thunderbolt 3 is not stable, anyone who has actually used TB3 will tell you this, hot plugging devices is a gamble and when it fails to come up the resolution is usually to reboot your PC numerous times until it works, this is especially true with TB docks. Thunderbolt was a POC from Intel originally called light peak and was based on using and optical cable, but then Apple took it and made the copper connector to try and lessen the cost and used it with the mini DP connector and had some moderate success but ultimately sold it back to Intel where it was combined with USB-C using the connector. Peripherals are hugely expensive, not to mention other than for smartphones, the USB type C connector hasn't reached the ubiquity level of the Type A connector. I have the surface book 2 and surface go, on both devices I have a type-C to type A dongle just so I can do something useful with both of those ports.

      bmbell71 I have a first gen Thunderbolt iMac and when the drive went I just hooked up a USB-C caddy with an SSD in and cloned my drive to the caddy and booted from there. No issues with sleep or crashes, and I set this up over three years ago and still works great. Was a lot faster than the HD in the iMac and was cheaper than replacing the old HD with a new HD! Since then I have been an advocate of Thunderbolt and it allows super fast transfer of files. For instance the family have about 6 Macs and to update each I just download the 5gb MacOS Catalina onto an external TB drive and transfer quickly. I also clone my drive on the TB Samsung external SSD so any new computer it is quick and easy to set up. We also have an eGPU that connects to the newer Macs to allow a boost to intensive work.
      I have been using for years and it is a sad state that in 2019 Microsoft cannot put one in a $2000 top spec SP7. Having fully accepted TB and gone all in I could never go back to USB-A. All my USB-A accessories can plug into a USB-C dock or for $5 a dongle. There is no excuse apart from that MS and Windows continues to be slow to adopt new tech.

    • @bmbell71
      @bmbell71 Před 4 lety

      You can't outperform the speed of the protocol, if you plugged in a USB-C caddy it was running as a USB-C device, that's how TB3 works it negotitates the protocol for the device that's connected. Addtionally there are further complications in TB3's implementation, first off depending on what cable you are using, TB3 or USB-C there are different transmission speeds and they are not all compatible. There's a 40Gbps TB3 cable and a 20Gbps, similarly there's a 10Gbps USBc and a 5Gbps cable, all these cables look the same. Adding to confusion is the promised backward compatibility with TB2 and TB1 devices, Don't believe me? Go read the 2 star reviews on Apple's TB3 to TB2 dongle. The big area where TB got some traction was in the audio world where latency with USB was a huge problem and TB seemed like it offered a better solution to older FW devices. Guess what most of these companies went with TB2 due to compatibility with older mac's only to find that the spec changed and now people are having issues with their devices. Not to mention apple isn't even compatible with the Texas Instruments TB3 controller. Thunderbolt is a great idea in theory, but was a half baked implementation that has never gained traction in the market. It doesn't matter how fast or cool it is. Thunderbolt is the "Betamax" of peripheral controllers.

      Because there're a lot of "unstable" thunderbolt 3 peripherals and cables out there does not mean that it's impossible to find good ones?? There are actually quite a few of good, stables, and proven TB3 products out there ranging from DAS solutions, eGPU docks, 4k/5k monitors that we're been using days in days out for the last couple years. There simply is no excuse for lacking it in the latest range of products.

    • @bmbell71
      @bmbell71 Před 4 lety

      @@Duckstalker1340 I never said you couldn't find any, I said performance is sporadic and compatibility is an even bigger issue. Market share is only around 2%. The move to go to USB-C connector was one of desperation as a technology that is viewed largely as an expensive apple proprietary protocol even though Apple sold it's stake to Intel. Actually the later fact should tell you everything you need to know about where it's headed, aka the route of FireWire.

    Hi 👋 there...I have used windows laptop as well as MacBook Air in the past...I switched from MacBook Air to surface pro 3 for the pen 🖊 pen functionality and one note...But Microsoft discontinued desktop onenote for the onenote app and the latter was superior to the former in many respects except one that the app version of onenote force you to buy OneDrive as it doesn’t give you an option to create notebooks in your local drive...Apart from this, you don’t have any other decent apps in Windows environment for note taking and annotating pdf documents...And it’s extremely frustrating...On the other side, iPad have tons and tons of great apps like notability,GoodNotes,LiquidText,pdf expert etc etc which are dream apps for anybody who like digital note taking and annotating PDFs...I am deliberately avoiding the hardware side where I find Apple Pencil and iPads better than surface pen and surface pro devices...
    One area where surface outshines iPad is that the former gives you full desktop experience of windows 10 vs iPad os limitations but I tell you that these lines are also blurring with the iPad os in which Apple has added desktop safari as well as ability to connect external drives with the revamped files app.
    Don’t get me wrong: I want Microsoft to succeed and the first step they can take is to give option of creating notebooks locally on computer hard drives in onenote app...Secondly, Microsoft must get these developers of notability,pdf exert and LiquidText etc (I have heard that liquid text is coming out for windows very soon which is a very good thing!) on board to make their apps available for surface devices and these must work as smoothly on windows as these work in iPads...
    So these are my thoughts.hopefully someday somebody will listen 👂...thanks...

That way if you are taking pictures of white board notes and its slightly higher then your viewing angle instead of picking it up for a better shot the pc can stay stationary and the camera can be swiveled into view.

There are a lot of old computers out there that won't be replaced for a while though, so many accessories and peripherals - particularly cheap ones - will use USB A for a while yet. The good thing about USB C ports is that they can do much more than USB A ports but I suspect that their most common use for some time will be to plug in a hub with USB A ports on it.
