Why would we use the probability of each value times the sum to get expected value? It seems like a roundabout way to calculate the mean to me.

If you take a statistics class, you will probably do this. It's often also included in the more "advanced" maths classes in high school. I did this in high school, but now im doing it again (just more advanced) in college
