Like with so many of the scenes in Deadwood, there's so much in this scene. The characters with the most decency, with "good souls", sadly often become the most self-hating, especially in environments of great brutality. Charlie and Joanie's intimate friendship is one of the emotional anchors of this masterpiece series for me. And I love the way he takes her hand at the end of the scene...
@@MrJamberee well, there are different kinds of love. I would agree that Charlie did love her, if platonically. Joanie and Charlie were able to connect upon first meeting. Perhaps the two most decent people in Deadwood. And I agree, one is the most touching and most insightful scenes. I'm glad Joanie and Charlie had each other
Everyone needs a Charlie Utter in their life.

Just a beautiful, beautiful scene. It alone eclipses entire stacks of scripts of other series.
Holding hands is very significant in Deadwood
Amazing writing, more insightful and inspirational than any self-help book
Charlie Utter's words here resonate. We all need to hear this sometimes.
This series may have been the best in television history. Fantastic.
This is one of the top five scenes in a series full of great moments.
Together again on Fear the Walking Dead.
He loves her ☺️
He loves everyone. Charlie is the best character in the show.
No, he just cares very much about her. He sees that she is a good person with a good heart.
Brenda Shea

@@brendacshea I don't think he loved Francis Wolcott or George Hearst but I take your point and agree with you.
If Charlie was 15 years younger, he would’ve killed Cy and run off with Joanie.
