    One of the best things about Pink and the Brain was the revelation that Brain, while a bit cynical and sometimes snippy, actually wants to rule the world because he thinks the current leadership is bad and his genius would make the world a better place for everyone to live in. He wants to be an overlord, but doesn't want it just to lord it over people.

    I saw you mentioned the Real Ghostbusters, which coincidentally was another victim of being screwed over by the network.
    It's so unfortunate to hear about these show creators getting abused the way they do, even when you've never seen the show itself.

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm Před 3 lety +9

      The Real Ghostbusters was tragedy. It was a BETTER sequel than the meh second movie ever was, for one thing. But the writers knew and understood the premise and heavily built up on it, giving some pretty great concepts and stories that, again, are far better than haunted painting stealing a baby. Then someone at ABC got the bright idea to get a consulting firm to "fix" the show by making the characters dumber, shoving the kid appeal character down the audience's throats, and overall just turning a show that's more sophisticated than it had any right to be into something kids supposedly wanted, but didn't.

    • @acholl980
      @acholl980 Před rokem +3

      You're of course talking about Slimer and the Real Ghostbusters taking the most annoying character (he should have stayed in the ecto-storage chamber) and given him a separate segment thus killing what made the series popular to begin with. This could be it's own subject to work on.

      But was it really worth screwing over the Warners so badly? I mean, I can respect if people actually like what they did to them, but to me they age worse with each passing day and it’s unfair that they’re not getting the same golden treatment Pinky and the Brain have.

      But without Tom Ruegger and his original team of creators. They weren't even asked to come back, with the exception of Paul Rugg who was kind of thrown a bone only because he was on the WB lot that day. I'm glad the original voice actors are working with Spielberg on Animaniacs again, but the creator of the characters never got to revisit the show the way he wanted to.

  • @mightyfilm
    @mightyfilm Před 3 lety +17

    I'm going to completely disagree about Snowball. In incapable hands, sure, the character would have fell flat and been completely pointless, but the writers knew how to deal with the character. Sure, give Brain a rival is an obvious choice, but taking that character and making him an evil counterpoint of malicious intent to Brain's supposed good intentions and ego gave the show stakes. By that point, the show was just about to go from funny comedy formula to repetitive and stale. Gently mixing it up by having Brain work to save the world from Snowball instead of just trying to take it over. There are times when he did come dangerously close, too. As for the Elmyra spinoff? It didn't need to exist at all. The show had a good run of 3 seasons, not to mention some new shorts folded into new Animaniacs episodes, which also was about to end. Pinky and the Brain had a great 3 part series finale, and even ignoring that, a very good series faux-nale where they stage a fake reunion show. The show didn't need to continue, and it was clear the end of the wacky cartoons on Kid's WB was over and action oriented shows, mostly off the success of Pokemon, became the network's new thing. Elmyra does work in her own element of Tiny Toons, and maybe one episode of Pinky and the Brain with her would have worked, but rewatching that show basically reiterated my point. Pinky and the Brain was great while it lasted, it didn't need to continue, leave the audience wanting more.

    • @Ethan-ey4jx
      @Ethan-ey4jx Před 2 lety

      Then why did the Animaniacs reboot made them continue to dominate the world?

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm Před 2 lety

      The show didn't need to continue past the three seasons at the point of the original airing. The network somehow wanted to keep the series around, but change it, but then cancel it. I don't see a 4th season of the original series. As for the new series, 20 something years of inactivity plus new writers giving the concept new blood worked wonders for Pinky and the Brain. Also, 20 plus years worth of pop culture and changing times gave the characters more to work with. Plus, if they were going to reboot Animaniacs, of COURSE they would go with the most popular headliner act with the Warner Siblings. I didn't get to see the new series until more recently, and they did indeed re-invigorate the characters, even though they kind of made Brain a little more sinister in a couple episodes. The parody of 1950's McCarthyism especially.

      @@mightyfilm And what would happen if any Ruegger cartoon similar to Animaniacs or Tiny Toons made a new cartoon series or a new episode of a cartoon series like Histeria or Road Rovers after the year 2000? Like 2001, 2002 or 2003? Even if it wasn’t on Kids WB?
      Would their animation and music change drastically and not be like how it was meant to be from the 90’s? What difference would it make for transitioning into the next decade? The early Y2K is supposed to share things in common with the late 90’s y’know.

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm Před 2 lety

      I don't entirely get your point, but I'll say this. Pinky and the Brain is one of my absolute favorites. The Elmyra series isn't as terrible as everyone says it is, but it's FAR more repetitive and formulaic than the original series was. I'd be afraid that would have been the fate of the original series if it continued onward past 3 seasons. I get the feeling we'd get two options of how the show would pan out. The show would just keep getting more meta over time about how they're running out of ideas on how Brain wants to take over the world (indeed a few episodes had hints of that), and then it would get meta about being meta, Simpsons style. Or option two, they'd have to entirely change the concept of the show, which was gradually happening with Snowball anyway. Inevitable Flanderization would befall the characters no matter what. Besides, even if somehow a fourth season of the show was greenlit, the third season didn't end with the satisfying series conclusion, there was no guarantee Kid's WB would have had use for comedy series at that point. For that's when the network took the shift to action shows like Pokemon and DC Comics properties. We'd most likely see an abrupt, unsatisfying ending, and it would have been buried in "The Big Cartoony Show," like Sylverster and Tweety Mysteries was in its final season.

    You know, listening to this video in the comments about “Pinky in the brain“, I have to say that my complaints go back to when the networks really controlled Saturday morning. This happened when the networks intervened at all, and we were no longer getting theatrical cartoons totally uncut! When cartoons were being created specifically for Saturday morning kids entertainment, you kind of knew that the entertainment was going to be rated as to how kid friendly the things were! So when they aired a classic Tom and Jerry cartoon, you know the first thing that people would complain about was the excess violence! No one understood exactly why people watch Tom and Jerry cartoons to begin with! Then, even when the Tom and Jerry cartoons showed up in syndication, they were edited down so nothing would “offend” anybody. Nobody realized, once again, why people go to the theaters to see these things! When they were Saturday matinees at your local theater, those were theatrical cartoons from another era, another time in another place, and you kids got to see what’s your parents like to see between classic films, or rather than brand new films. So the adults were getting entertained, even with the animation. Of course it had to be something kid friendly about the cartoons, so some of the characters were cute and cuddly, or they tried to emulate Walt Disney, or are they just plain marked everything that Walt Disney was trying to do. Of course, this was not the case, but it felt like it sometimes. Some animators kind of understood what Walt Disney was doing, and they wanted to do something like it, but the adult content remained so adults would not get bored. That to me was Looney Tunes and merry melodies in the beginning. Even when you had a sniffles cartoon, look at the first one, his adversaries The cat was defeated by white? A drunken electric razor! It was so absurd it was funny! If a network cartoon was made of that, you know the network with immediately start punching holes in the whole concept, and anything entertaining about it would be taken away! Mind you, folks, this is my opinion and not necessarily fact. I’m sure if you talk to animators, they were happy with what they did. I am happy with most of what they did, except for a few examples which I’ve mentioned above. The first time I saw a theatrical Tom and Jerry cartoon, edits were already made, so I didn’t realize that there was stuff that certain people didn’t want us to see. Then, years and years later, we got these wonderful DVDs and Blu-rays of uncut cartoons, and we realize what fun was Hidden within the cartoons, references to adult films and adult radio shows, things like that. Do you enjoy these cartoons, you have to understand entertainment history. If you don’t, you will find some things unsettling! This does not mean that everything invented specifically for television animation was awful. Far from it; I liked the very early Hanna-Barbera cartoons. Those were interesting, sometimes written by the same people who wrote those theatrical Tom and Jerry cartoons. The only difference, or so it seemed, is that all animal characters had to talk. What I loved, when I saw my first theatrical Tom and Jerry cartoon, was that the cat and mouse mostly did not even talk! Their emotions and the comedy was all pantomime! I loved it! So my long meandering point here is that this sort of stuff was happening long before the invention of “pinky and the brain“. You kind of know that if you approach a network with a television show that is sophisticated in any way, you’ll have to deal with the networks, because they will not get it! It has to appeal to the general audiences or it doesn’t see the light of day. This is what eventually turned me off of Saturday morning altogether! I knew that if I was going to see anything worthwhile, it would be in syndication; and even then, once the sensors got their hands on it, you knew you were gonna be missing the point of some of the gags with the cartoon. And, of course, the main studios wanted to make money. So they would go along with the network sensors, no matter how much it hurt all the talent within the studio.

    You know what this spin-off with Elmyra reminds me of? It reminds me of those really... REALLY bizarre Looney Tunes shorts from the 60s with Daffy Duck and Speedy González. Just like this spin-off, these cartoons sucked because... Well, obviously, a duck and a mouse don't fit together as enemies in the same cartoon. Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain did basically the same thing BUT WORSE! Because not only they don't fit, but also... What are you gonna do with this 3? Have Pinky and the Brain trying to take over the world but Elmyra is preventing them from doing it? This won't work. Maybe it could work if it was only suppose to be ONE episode of the ORIGINAL Pinky and the Brain show crossovering them, not an entire series. And this show is so nonsense that, when I see the intro, I can easily imagine this being a joke from an Animaniacs short, but no, it isn't! This actually exists. It's just ridiculous how far executives can go just because of a few more points.
