Banjomasterr, this is a late 20's early 30's one piece flange Gibson Style 1 conversion. It has a full flathead Hopkins tone ring and a neck built by Bill Hayes in Maine. It's a good solid banjo with lots of power.
Excellent playing Royce! I reference this all the time when learning. Are there tabs of this full song how you played it? I can't seem to find tabs for the entire thing. Just the beginning snippet. Thank you!
I know all the sections FMB now , surprised how well the rolls fit in the lower neck (scruggs was a genius) an I'm finding it easier than the D-H or P-O using the mentronome the more you learn the more you enjoy
Fantastic version of this tune Royce. Your picking style is so precise with incredible speed.I'm a fiddler& guitar picker & just started playing banjo for the last couple of months.Could you tell me what picks you use? I'm still experimenting but hav'nt found the right combination yet.Any tip would be helpful .You're a master! Thanks for the inspiration.
Hey great job there mate, good firm playing the way I like it. I think I picked up something I might have gotten wrong on the second high break. That you are doing right and better, only a couple notes just before the ding ding 12th fret, I try to be accurate. I worked out the high breaks from slowing down records in the latter 70,s when I was barley a teenager. But gave it up for about 41 years, just taken it up again at 54 about 16+months ago. Cheers...
Nicely done, whoever gave thumbs down must just be jealous, Or not play a banjo at all. From one banjo player to another... Respect man, that was great. 👍
no biggie...LOL...it's just one version at one point in time. It's a free country so people can do what they feel like. To be honest, it's nothing spectacular but it's what I did at that point in time...thank you.
Yolchie, I think if you learned the Earl Scrugg's version out of his book it would be really similar. I don't play his version note for note but I play it with his arrangement in mind. Yep, if you're a guitar fingerpicker the banjo should come fairly easy for you. Good luck!
Dude that was amazing and I like if ppl dont play things exactly the same because you should make it how you like to do it. That's what makes it all interesting.i just started playing at age59. I've played drums in rock bands for decades but I love old country and hope to have my own band before I die .and play some good gigs. Wish I hadn't waited this long th0 my voice was way better when I was young. Great job .,just amazing ability. How long you play before you tried playing foggy mnt?
play something you know well and use a metronome, gradually increasing tempo and forcing yourself to play a little faster each time. Keep doing this on a regular basis and the speed will come. Keep in mind not to sacrifice accuracy for the want for speed. It's Ok to practice a little faster and lose accuracy for the sake of speed building.
Dude as a drummer I've struggled at times from tension while playing. Try to remember to play relaxed. Anxiety and tension just kill your ability to play well. I know how bad it is .
That tone is absolutely incredible! I wonder how long this guys been playing. What a way to blow out 2023. Good tunes never fade away.
This is the example you send your friends to show whats possible and what it sounds like done right not what you do

Royce are you playing that!? Wow! I’m a banjo beginner. You inspire me again. Bought two violins from you.
Yes I pick the banjo on occasion. Lol. Thank you.
@burtvillefarms I would like to ask what is the difference between the score of the banjo and other instruments?
I am not sure. I don't read music very well unfortunately. @@noonesawmyname3907

this was better then meager my friend
It is performed in the key of Ab major, I guess
Flatt and Scruggs tuned up half step.
Slowed it down to75% and I still can't get the high part down. Awesome though.😆
Played in penguins from Madagascar
😎🙂
Sounds more like Earl than Earl does! Nicely done
hurried it just a smidge. Better than I could do, though.
