This song was composed in ShivRanjani raag. And both Kishore da and Lata ji were supposed to sing it separately.. Lata ji sang it first and then Kishore da sang it after listening to Lata ji's version. And we all know what happened thereafter. Kishore da's version of mere naina sawan bhado was ultimate . Lata Ji sang the same song and even though she is classically trained and has done more harkat in the song, people still gravitated towards Kishore Da's version simply because he has put his soul into the song. Not many singers can do that. It is only creative genius like Rafi Sahab and Kishore Da who can impart this kind of mesmerizing quality to the songs.
Her version is actually the gold standard for this song, as it is more difficult and is truer to Raga Shivaranjani. KK himself insisted that her version be recorded before his, and he only sang his version after listening to hers continuously for days. He sang wonderfully and as you say, his version is more popular, but as a classical music lover, I prefer Didi's. Of course, the male version is also a beauty. No doubt about that.
Yes, KK's version became more popular. Sometimes, perfection doesn't hit people. Lataji technically was perfect in this song. Also, this song sounds marginally better in a heavier male voice.
