As a poor person who take public transportation and have to buy groceries economically, it does seem to me that judging by the looks of your beautiful apartment and groceries, it does seem like you're living an extravagant lifestyle, relatively. Which is why I think you're struggling more with the inflation. Everybody is. But your relatively more expensive lifestyle contributes to why it's harder to cope with the already insane inflation. I think software engineers having high pay for years now compared to the rests of us, are just used to more extravagant lifestyles. This honestly doesn't look like a paycheck to paycheck scenario. Just bad and inefficient spending habits.

Living in a low income area while earning high income can be dangerous. Your neighbors will eventually realize you have options they don’t have. Someone would have to make a choice to make sure all aspects of their appearance and possessions match the low income area.
That's why return-to-office is so awful. I live over 100 miles from a major city and rent my apartment. My wife and I live on about $3K per month. The median sale price of a home in Lawton, Oklahoma is $165K. A small house is even cheaper.

I'd like to know how if nobody is finding jobs.. how are they surviving. Years ago most people I knew in the lower middle class to upper poor (e.g. minimum wage or so) could barely get by, living check to check. How are all these people surviving? They could barely pay bills 10 to 20 years ago, how do they somehow have months and months of money to live on and not getting evicted, etc? Did they all move in with 10 other people in to 1 bd places? Like.. I have not found anyone that is "struggling" to the point of living on the street or out of car.. but how? I cahsed out stock to save my house and am almost out of money and still cant find a job. Unemployment is done in 2 months. My only choice is to sell the house. But get this.. where do I go? I can NOT get approved on a rental.. no income even with 100K in the bank (after selling house) will NOT allow me to rent. So where do I go? I have no friends/family to live with. I certainly dont want to stay in hotels at those costs.. I'll be out of money in 2 months. I am baffled how hard it is to rent even if you have money but no job. That's made things infinitely harder.

My friend does software engineer. He makes $250k a year. But he doesn't know how to manage his money.

$250k is on the higher end for a software engineer. If your friend is living in silicon valley, that $250k doesn't go as far as it would in somewhere like Utah.
people in canada think that renting a basement and living paycheck to paycheck is middle class life style lol . Canada been a third world shit hole for quiet sometime and canadians just refuse to admit the sad reality . most canadians cant afford buying a house , im not over exagerating , you must be rich to be able to own a house in canada , meaning that there is no middle class anymore , there is a tiny percent of rich families that run the country and the rest are in survival mode , the poor are homeless . this is how society is in third world countries where the middle class is non existant .

Bruh if you're spending 400$ a week on groceries anywhere in the USA and don't have like a family of 5 that you are supporting alone, you're just doing something wrong.... If you can't afford that don't buy it, you can definitely survive fine with 200$ a week on groceries EASILY and comfortably anywhere in the USA.
That amount is for 2 people + mostly raw/organic foods. So we spend a lot of money on high quality produce , which ends up being almost double the amount of non-organic foods

You can’t come in here complaining about food prices if you’re voluntarily paying maximum cost at Whole Foods.
@@mattropolis7857 we buy foods that are “real”. Most food in the US have a ton of additives and preservatives. If you read up online about what the FDA approves here, you wouldn’t be calling it luxury 😉 I never shop at Whole Foods lol.

He died at the same age as his own hard-living father while doing a TV show. A show where he claimed he'd live to 100 with how healthy he was eating. Sure you shouldn't always eat garbage food - but "real" foods don't guarantee you any more years either.

It seems like some people are living paycheck to paycheck because they think their expensive taste is normal. It's why the macro level economic stats aren't really useful. Are people legitimately struggling? Are they living within their means? Are they legitimately unable to afford the basics? Or are they spending like it's going out of style and inflation has caused life on the ragged edge of their means to catch up with them? Can't tell without looking at account statements.
Also the monthly P&I payment on that mortgage is around $4,700 not $6,100. Still not working at $90k/year but being off by nearly 25% doesn't help your argument.

@@PoojaDutt @BTrain is right.. you added the principal amount + the interest amount, that is more than what it would be. The total amount for the first 7 years is largely interest only, then after 7 years (which is why even if you're a billionaire.. buying a home for the first 7 year write off is a good thing to do typically.. as you get a much bigger write off with all the interest payments) the amount you pay starts paying more towards the principal and less to interest. It is one of the reasons banks lover repos.. if they can anil you after that first 7 years.. they made all their money back already on the loan.. and get to resell the home and make more. Friend of mine has a 650K loan, around 7% and pays around 4800 a month.. which when you multiply that out.. works out to 1.72million over 30 years. The bank gets more than 2x the value of the home (at the time of purchase) back. So a lot of people when they sell a home 20 years later.. for 1 mil after buying it for 800K are like "Yah we made 200K profit" but no.. you actually lost money cause you paid over 1mil with interest in that 20 years.

I have been living in South Florida for 30 years and am currently studying computer science to become a control system engineer. With four years of experience in the field and an associate's degree in engineering technology, I am finding it challenging to secure a job in South Florida. I aim to leverage my electrical background to pursue a higher-paying remote job in another state while continuing to live in Florida.
I'm 60 and not once broke the $50k barrel. Hell never reach the $45k barrel either. My highest gross was near $43k. I'm doing just fine in the comfortable zone. I'll feel rich if I could get beyond the $50k range. Been out of debt since the age of 36. Bought my first house at age 56 and I paid cash for it, so I'm still debt free. I have a garden and greenhouse so I grow a lot of my own food year round. I have a strict budget and I always stuck with it. I'm able to save up money, so I always had a emergency fund. I have low income but doing well even with this inflation. I just squeeze tighter or cut corners what ever I have to do to not feel it so bad.

How do you go from 500$ on groceries in 2022 to 1480$ in 2023. Do you want to say that the US has inflation of 200% year to year. I know it doesn't always reflect official 4% number for inflation across different categories and grocery prices can go up quicker but this is wild anyway. No wonder you can't afford anything. Seems like you should take a closer look into your spending habbits.
These expenses she cites are a joke. And maybe you shouldn't buy a **median** priced home these days. If they understand math, which I am beginning to think that they don't, median means that HALF of the homes are less expensive than that.
Actually..she's not wrong about the grocery prices. She looks like she is healthy, eats good healthy food. I can tell you that a bag of doritos has doubled in price in 3 years. Bananas are 3x the price. Eggs are 5x the price they used to be. A loaf of healthy bread is easily $7 or more. So a LOT of food has indeed doubled or more in cost. I am lactose and gluten intolerant. Gluten bread is like $10+ a loaf. Gluten pasta is 2x+ regular pasta, which went up. So depending on what you're eating and why.. prices could have 3x in price in the past 5 or so years. Not everything, of course. But now lets add in good quality food is even more expensive. I can tell you 5 years ago $600 at Costco would last us about 3 to 4 weeks with a family of 5. Today I do $600 for 4 of us every 2 weeks and it barely lasts. That's Costco. Not bad but not great food quality in most things. Hell I am looking at shopping at Walmart and Winco now because without a job and running out of money fast, and cant rent (cause without a job you cant get a rental easily if at all).. I am freaking out over surviving now.
I'm not a software engineer but I am looking into a new career. I know what I do now is not working out for me financially and physically. I feel burnt out and not enjoying my free time because of being so tired. Recently diagnosed with Diabetes my food spending has increased. I am spending more than ever before. I live paycheck to paycheck all my life. Do software engineers struggle? I live a simple life with no fancy over the top lifestyle. I just want to work in a field where I'm not being abused, burnt out, or unappreciated.

It’s very depressing the fact that you work so hard as a software engineer and you have to live taking public transportation. It’s just so grueling.
Targeting remote jobs at startups (because they're relatively easier to get) and living in Asian countries with low cost of living might be the way to go. I'm from India and looking at the bloodbath of the tech industry in the USA definitely killed my plans of doing a Masters in CS there. I hope it gets better soon, but there's no changing the fact that the real estate in the states you mentioned are hyper inflated.
Also the visa situation is bad and it won't improve even if tech hiring returns to normal.

what it boils down to is even successful people will never own their own home. it really is just dawning on me watching this. i will rent for ever, i guess its not so bad. owning was a childish pipedream it seems for people who were born in the last 50 yrs.

Tbh it depends on the perspective. I earn 3.5K per annum ( in Dollars) and I have to pay everything with that (rent, food, public transport). With this I can't go out and all until I save up to 2 or 3 months (that is too extremely lucky if anything major doesn't come up for me to pay). This doesn't cover any benefits, it's in-hand only but at the end of the day I am living and surviving so yeah maybe my case can be said as paycheck to paycheck but mine too cannot be compared with people who are living on even less than this because according to their perspective, I am living a fancy life (a lot of people have said this to me). Expenses depends on your needs, what you want.

I'm not sure what impact AI is really having, though. I think the tax law change had a much bigger impact.
Software engineers still need to budget. But we are budgeting luxuries fairly often.
A mid level normal software engineer at a mod sized company is making $120k to $160k not including bonuses or stock. Many companies bonus and stock probably only add $10-20k to that base salary.

The groceries are buying are the most expensive things you can buy. You're living outside of your means already just with that. I have a family of three and we spend roughly $1,000 a month on groceries.
The cities you pointed out are very strong democratically LED cities with a ton of social programs and very high tax rates.
I live in texas, about 20 minutes from The woodlands. Not only can I buy groceries but I can afford a very decent house for about $250 k.
You may have to face the reality and you can't buy everything that you want. Middle class doesn't mean you literally buy everything that you want. It means that you have the ability to be more comfortable than someone who is in that lower financial class.

This is far from paycheck to paycheck. God, these university graduate, six digit earners can never be content with their lives, can they. Vr set, beautiful apartment, a big car, high quality groceries. And still claims "no money" 3:57. These people have no idea what actual poverty is like.
