  • The Full Contents of the Chest we brought down from the Attic.
    I go through all the things in the dusty old Trunk, which was found in the middle house.
    Hello, we are Tony and Jane and we are living in, and renovating , our old Relais De Poste/Coaching Inn.
    We live in the middle of France in a region called The Berry.
    We have over 40 rooms to renovate so there is plenty of work to be done. We also love to trawl the local Brocantes, flea markets and antique shops for quirky furnishings and furniture.
    We love to find out about local history and often visit other peoples buildings including our friends’ Chateaux.

    What a wonderful find! I wonder if you have the room, if you could possibly dedicate a very small bedroom to this? Set it up as a little boys room with the trunk and books, a small bed, an old students desk, old toys etc? Future guests would find it fascinating.

    I love old books...the smell of the pages says History! I was also surprised that no photos or more artworks, were found. I used to always scribble and hide things among the pages of my school books! Thank you for sharing Jane.

    Jane we were told to cover our books with brown paper in the States or at least in NYC starting in the 1950’s.

    It is really lovely to add to the history of the family who once lived there and give an insight into their lives.
    Just had your Camembert and butternut squash quiche for lunch again Jane - now a firm favourite in our house - especially with Le Rustique cheese!!

      The Physics book said Tanqueray on it, I looked it up and it is a make of gin originally from London but now made in Scotland, weird hey?🙂ITA was designed by Pitman, didn't have to look that one up as Mum was a Shorthand Typist and Legal Secretary!🙂Loved the books!!

    Enjoying your vlog! Just wanted to mention that I noticed cracks and spaces in the wood inside your wonderful old trunk! Have you examined it very carefully to see if anything valuable or interesting is beneath them? Sometimes things were hidden or lost in there! Thanks again for sharing!

    Thanks Jane! I love browsing thru old books- they are like little "bombs" of history that tell about the time and the person that owned them. And the handwriti ng is stunning! Not many fiction books there though. Serious learning.

    In the brown paper covered Morale book, that thing you thought that was stuck on. I don’t think its stuck on . Just try to peel it off. You might be surprised of the front! I wonder if Raymont studied to be a teacher because there are several books that are to be for the schoolmaster/ teacher.( maitre) and in Belgium an Ecole Normale is the school where you study to be a teacher. Please hoover the books and the chest and clean it out so the books don’t deteriorate further and when its all cleaned up you can display it somewhere in the house. Its all so interesting seeing these old books from 100 plus years ago and it must stay with the house as a rememberance of the people who lived there before.

    • @notquiteachateaudiy
      @notquiteachateaudiy  Před 3 lety +1

    An interesting dip into the past, I wish I had kept all my school books. Im guessing the arabic language books were because France still occupied several North African countries at that time. The trunk would look great with a good clean and a coat/polish of wax to enhance the surface.

    Wow just goes to show how religious formation played a part in education. Carnet means notebook. Petit Citoyens, I wonder if he was studying to be a civil servant? Lots of math books too.

  • @moinature803
    @moinature803 Před 3 lety +1

    The old manuscript sheet you found in the instruction religieuse reads Denier du culte, Les Remerciements de Mr le Cure. I cannot read the last line. It means Parish Contribution, with the Thanks of The Local Priest. The pious image also found with the pious leaflet would have been enclosed with the hand written cover page as a thank you gift for a large contribution given as "payment" for religious services performed as funeral services or baptisms etc.

    In the 70s, we used to use a plastic map of France in the geography class, in his time it probably was cardboard, not sure about now though, I need to ask my niece. We also used to cover our books and notebooks with brown or coloured paper to protect them. Some school books were bought second hand from families to families, it was cheaper than buying new. Could it be: école normale.

    I would keep these books on display as part of the history, doubt any are classified as rare but they are a good talking point.💖💖🇦🇺

      @@notquiteachateaudiy yes well even Arabs have had written text a couple thousand years ago and before. Trouble is it’s taking many years to transfer from very old crumbly paper to computer’s.Think they will lose a whole lot more before than can be transcribed

    Can’t believe you never found any old shellac gramophone records 😢
    Surprised no spiders in the chest or as the contents are paper, no silverfish.
    Or any pressings.
    PHYSIQUE or PHYSICK
    Possibly not stuck into that book, it will probably gently pull off
    They look like library stamps
    Obviously a Catholic family
