The instrument you're playing is the Persian variety. There is a variation of this that's played in India which has even more strings (think of the tuning headaches on that!). The mallets are also held differently, in that the players only use the index and middle fingers to hold them. It's fun playing glissandi on them. And yes, they are easy to get a great sound out of, but very hard to play well, like most instruments 🙂

@@WORLDDRUMCLUB You're welcome. Looking forward to seeing how this pairs with your other melodic percussion. You should also try playing it with the reverie harp since they have somewhat similar timbres.

Thank you for explaining the intricate details of the santoor. I always wondered how the player can get so many notes out of relatively few strings. This is truly an educational CZcams clip.

Known in American mountain music as a hammered dulcimer, in Chinese music as the yangqin. Wonderful instruments, as complicated to play as you want to make it but easy to get beautiful sounds from even if you're not an accomplished musician.

Im kinda biased towards the santoor 😅 cuz im Iranian, but im pretty sure the persian variety is came first before the hammered dulcimer or the indian
Edit: the little hammer things are called mezrabs

Very nice ! if you want you can check the Greek Santouri on my page , its kind of more bass as it is more similar to balkan cymballum! (by the way santoor means 100 strings in Farsi/persan language)

It is indeed a kind of hammered dulcimer. Similar instruments exist in many parts of the world, each with different tuning systems and string counts.
