Minecraft Probability Comparison (2020)

- I wrote a Visualization tool and thought, why not do a video with it! So, let's take a look at the rarest of the rarest, and compare probabilities in Minecraft! Link to sources is below.
The values apply to the latest version of the Minecraft Java edition (1.15.2) and may be subject to change in future updates. These numbers are also partly different when compared to other editions of Minecraft (Bedrock and Pocket edition).
Disclaimer: I made quite some effort to research the numbers in this video, but no one is without fault. The statistical values may be invalid, incorrect or not up to date. You can find a link that lists my sources (and calculations) below.

I wrote this little visualization tool myself (as a web app). After I finished my Visualization course at university, I wanted to create a little tool and was inspired by @reigarw , so I ended up with this. You can find Reigarw's channel here:

I didn't use an HTML canvas element to draw the probabilities. Instead, all the elements are actual HTML elements, which made it a bit more laggy than I anticipated if I'm honest. If there's a next time, I should probably use an HTML canvas and some JavaScript drawing library instead of doing everything bare bones.
After I had collected all the probabilities and made some calculations, I tried to record the result running on Mozilla Firefox with NVIDIA Shadow Play, which didn't work when using the browser in full screen mode. So, I ended up using OBS which could record Firefox without any problems. This was not really an optimal solution either though, now that I think about it. Generating every frame with the tool itself would have probably been much smoother than screen-recording it while running. But hey, what's done is done. At least I see a pattern for this video concerning the production, hahaha.
Anyway, in this video I take a look at a number of Minecraft probabilities and compared them, like the chances of shulkers dropping their shells, baby animals or pink sheep spawning, getting a rabbit's foot, wither skeletons dropping their skulls, breeding completely random horses, foxes spawning with emeralds, zombies spawning with iron swords, individual splash texts, zombie pigmans spawning in the Overworld, a "Minceraft" title screen appearing, lightning bolts striking in a chunk, "skeleton trap" horses spawning, end portals generating completed (and activated), the same seed (or world) getting randomly generated twice, or the chances of an OP zombie villager chicken jockey spawning with enchanted full diamond armor and wielding an enchanted iron sword. (Like that's ever going to happen!)

I made some small *errors* in the video:
- _1/20 "Baby Animals":_ It says there's a 10% chance in the description. Of course, 1 in 20 = 5% chance.
- _1/1024 "Switched Mooshroom Breed":_ The right percentage in the description should be 0.098%, not 0.00098%.
-_1/4000 "Apple and Sapling":_ The right percentage in the description should be 0.025%, not 0.00025%.

Once when I was playing Minecraft (in creative) & when I was building something, I saw 4 skeletons on 4 skeleton horses, to me this kinda shocked me at first

Only if they spawn individually (in a chicken-free zone). They appear much more likely, if any chickens are nearby! :)
@@IJAMinecraft When it says Local difficulty, what does that exactly mean? I know what local difficulty is and how it works, but does it mean that you can only find certain mobs on easy with low local difficulty? And if you made it normal or hard mode suddenly it couldn't spawn? Or does it mean at LEAST easy/normal or whatever? I'm a bit confused, why would some mobs spawn in easier modes or easier chunks and then not spawn at all in harder difficulties?
@@johnwest6690 The regional (local) difficulty mostly influences spawn rates, enchantments and equipment and the like. It doesn't change if mobs can spawn, just how often they do. So, you have to include that stuff in the calculations. The lower the regional difficulty, the lower the chance for these spawn rates.
Though the default difficulty can influence what spawns, for example zombies will only spawn without armor on Easy difficulty anymore.

I had 6 lightning strikes in a row around me in a storm, 4 to some skeletons, 1 to a Cow and another to a tree, all this in the version of Bedrock with a friend
Just wanna clarify a bit here about some of the numbers like lightning and skeleton trap. Those numbers are the probability for each tick, and there is 20 ticks per second so really the probability is alot higher than it might seem, for example, if you spent 10 minutes in a thunderstorm, the chance of getting a skeleton trap increases by more than 10’000% compared to just one tick, like in the video.
If we apply this to being hit by lightning, we can se that there’s actually a 1 in 100 chance to be struck every 10 minutes in a storm.
On the other hand, getting an overpowered villager requires a zombie to spawn, which can be a bit deceiving as instead of happening every tick, new zombies spawn much slower and thus the real probability of seeing such a zombie is much lower than it might seem.

2:13 That skeleton trap has happened to me once. It was on a survival server and I told the admins "yo I found one of those skeleton horse trap" and he legit said "that the only time that has happened on this sever". I tamed 2 of the horses. Still have them to this day.
Used to play on a server with a glitchwhere the skeleton traps wouldnt stop coming every time it would rain. Didnt know if it was a glitch or it actually just happened, but the world had reset so can't check it

I randomly was walking around and I saw a skeleton horse. I thought ‘oh cool a skeleton horse!’ I was walking to it when lightning struck and a bunch of skeletons on skeleton horses appeared. My goodness it made me JUMP XD

I got skeleton trap thrice in the same world, and I managed to kill all the skeletons without killing even one skeleton horse, now I have a shed with 12 skeleton horses😂

Yeah, I don't think they're so rare I once had a few stacks of them, w/o a farm. Turned most into golden apples.
Dude eat it they are really common it is 1 in 100 per leave so just a couple trees and you will get one.
theres a japanese dude who made a minecraft series, were he started RIGHT NEXT to a pink sheep, the thing is he wanted to do this series without knowing nothing about minecraft, the literal first thing he says is "Can I kill you?" and then proceeds to kill it...

My first time revisiting Minecraft for like 2 years and I was exploring underwater chests and stuff... apparently those scary 4 undead horsemen was a skeleton trap but when I encountered them I basically ran... no idea that was even a thing.

The tips in my minecraft main menu showed a weird word and its changing like 4 times every seconds, is it common or no?
In my main world I have a mob display area that includes a spider jockey, a chicken jockey, a pink sheep, a full diamond zombie, and a skeleton trap. I feel like the probabilities on some of these are way better than the video makes it out to be. I mean i have a full pit of skeleton horses that I've collected. I do feel bad tho for that one dude who saw an OP Zombie Villager Jockey and killed it instead of trapping it.

@@argusto3337 That's not true, actually. The term he is referring to is called "ergodicity". It actually goes way deeper than that but if you want, look up "ergodicity hypothesis". It is a common assumption about REAL systems because thermodynamics basically needs a system to be ergodic, otherwise you wouldn't be able to calculate thermodynamic expectation values. Ergodicity implies that an observables time average is equal to its ensemble average. Now to the above statement: If you take an unbiased random walk (of your character), you expect an ensemble average movement of 0 which is not true for the time average of the movement.

the funniest thing is that i got it, and because i opened up multiplayer so quickly i just assumed i read it wrong

That's assuming each person only opens Minecraft once so it's much more than that
I remembered I have this pet turtle and a castle (the castle doesn't have a roof), so when I was doing my stuff at the castle, a lightning strike struck my turtle, so the turtle was already dead at that point. I realized that it's rare if that thing happens.
I get brown sheeps commonly than most other colours either than white on minecraft.
Once i found a fully diamond armor zombie which is my rarest thing.i couldn't stand a chance to that zombie becuz of some of his items being enchanted

that happened to me sorta on my survival world, it was my second time seeing a pink sheep but i later witnessed it get murder between my eyes, i killed the wolf and placed the pink sheeps wool where it died.

I actually once did get one of the rarest things which is same world twice exact stuff and structures and I went insane after that but I was freaking out
I found an ender portal in a stronghold with every of the pearls. 😆 But i didn’t know it was so rare sooooo I went to explore the stronghold and now I can’t find the portal again. 😭

If you play Minecraft for a while, a long while, you can relate eggs dont drop chickens if you throw them, they only appear if YOUR FRIEND throws them, and of course, 4 by 4

He created the ender dragon ( His best work ) to hide where he truly is. The rumors said that he was a glitch right? Well it would only make sense that he should be the final boss. How about there's a 1% chance that when you kill the ender dragon a new portal opens up which leads to his world. It looks like the original but just more broken and messed up. When you finally meet him he can use these weird glitch attacks or spawn mobs or just do anything.

mc doomslayer The first time i played 1,9 that happened to me too. The 2nd day (irl time) there spawned 2 skeleton traps on in the same night of thunderstorms.
But i played 1,8 on a server and forgot to change back to 1,9 before entering my mc world again and i lost everything as they didn't exist in that update and i had no backup..
i honestly thought it was common because i got the horse trap twice in a day the other time

so i was playing the newest snapshot of 2022, i was trying stuff out in creative mode and then i create (in that snapshot) a new world, and i get the exact same biome, the exact same spawn all the same
is that on purpose? that you spawn in same spawn in the snapshots or i just got extremely lucky?
i guess it's rare because i never spawn in same biome over and over again

About OP Zombie Villager Jockey: the rarest one needs to:
-Be in fully enchanted diamond armor
-Hold a fully enchanted diamond sword
-Be left-handed (hold a sword in the left hand)
-Be a chicken jockey
-Be a Zombie-Villager
-Able to pick up items
-Drop at least the sword it has or any armor part
-Furthermore in need to drop an iron ingot
Naturally it is nearly impossible to meet one of them. The only way to do this - spawn it manually with a command block
I wouldn’t say the *only* way. Theoretically it’s very much possible, just extremely unlikely.
That being said, I’m almost positive at least one person in the history of Minecraft has come across one.

In one of my old old old OLD worlds he appeared for a second then disappeared in my world no joke
I had a baby pink sheep spawn inside of my house after mining and finding 52 diamonds without fortune, after I found a mesa biome 5 swamps 4 dark oak biomes and 2 coral reefs, found 5 villages on foot by mistake, found the stronghold on accident when i had never entered a nether foretress, and to top it off, I have never found an oak forest. I am being completely serious. All of this happened within a week too.
i found a pinks sheep once i took a picture on my phone but i think the phone i took the picture on is old and might or might not be brocken
