    My wife & I took our honeymoon cruise on the Norway in October 1993. Eastern Carbbean. This brought back great memories. Thanks!

    Thank you. My first cruise was on the Norway, March 1981. We were at sea when Reagan was shot and Communications were not as they are now we didn’t find out until the next day as we were reaching St. Thomas. It was a bit scary because we didn’t know what was going on here in the states! Undeniably a memorial cruise and a magnificent ship. the Blue Lady gone but never forgotten.

    A little bit of everything in this video. Thanks for posting. Our first cruise was aboard the Norway in '94 and 15 cruises later, we are still trying to top it.

    I cruised on the Norway twice. First time in '88 and the second time in '93. It crushes my heart that she was scrapped. Those photos are hard to look at. Thanks for bringing back some beautiful memories.

    What a wonderful video and tribute to SS Norway. I was a crew member in 1987 and am so glad to be able to tour the ship again, and with your help of captions, remember names of the areas. I can now show my family where I lived and worked when I was single. Thanks for such a great documentary! She was a classy ship!

      Are you sure these were taken in 1981 because it was only until 1990 when the two decks above the superstructure were added

    The original decor of the SS France was pretty cool and some aspects were left on the Norway - the starburst ceiling fixtures in one of the lounges and the mod aluminum bureaus in the cabins. Originally there was a fantastic sun tapestry over the bar in the “smoking room,” wonder where that is now. Also the main lounge had a gorgeous mosaic tile dance floor, there’s a photo online of Audrey Hepburn doing the Twist on it. Guessing that floor didn’t survive the Norway transitioning

      +Charles Perron Hey That's Awesome, Did You Cruise Regularly As Part Of The Ships Band? I Remember My Parents Took Us On The SS Norway Back In The Early/Mid 80's (I Was In My Early 20's) I Wish I Could Remember The Exact Year, But I Do Remember Curt Gowdy Was Aboard As A Celebrity & He Gave A Talk. It Was Our First Cruise And The Very Best Time. I Also Remember A Dance Place On Board Called Dazzles, (Really Neat) The Ship Was So Grand In Size It Couldn't Pull In To Some Ports, So They Had 2 Smaller Boats Stored Inside The SS Norway That Seated About 400 People Each And They Brought Us To Shore. So Much Fun. Thanks For Pointing Out Your Place In The Band, It Was Neat To See You. Cheers!

      I was on board for about a year 1981-2. I don't remember Curt Gowdy coming on board, but I did hear about sports themed cruises after I left so you might have come on board soon after my time. I remember Dazzles Bar and Disco, and I certainly remember the two tenders: Little Norway I and Little Norway II. Each had a capacity of 450 I believe. When we arrived at a port (typically St. Thomas), passengers would be first to leave the ship and the crew would stay behind for fire and boat drills. My recollection was that most crew members didn't like boat drills (where they actually put the life boats in the water), but to me it was just a fun adventure. It helped that our life boat captain was an hilarious Norwegian officer who made it fun.

      + Charles Perron It Must Have Been A Great Year. (81/82) It Sounds Like Your Shipmates Were A Good Bunch. Especially The Life Boat Capt. I Didn't Know They Had Names For The Two Tenders, Little Norway I & II, (And Capacity Of 450 Each) I Will Remember That. Just Out Of Curiosity, Do You Ever Go On Vacation Via A Cruise? Preference Of Ships? Back When The Norway Was Cruising, Do You Remember A Stop Off At A Private Island? I Have A Recollection Of Doing That... Do You Think There Is Any Chance A Wealthy Family Or Business Might Bring The SS Norway Back To Life So She Could Cruise Again. Most Likely It Would Be Way To Costly, But A Fun Dream To Think About.

    • @charlesperron2133
      @charlesperron2133 Před 6 lety +1

      The island is called Great Stirrup Cay, owned by NCL. It is still in use by their other ships. Unfortunately, the SS Norway was sold for scrap and was dismantled, so there is no way to bring it back. Good idea though. I know a lot of people would have loved to see it happen. As far as cruise vacations, I have been on a couple of cruises as a passenger since those days, but not recently. The crew members on board at that time were a great mix of people. I'm still friends with a couple of them even after all these years.

      + Charles Perron The SS Norway Sold For Scrap, I Did Not Know That. After You Told Me, I Looked On-Line & Read Some More About Her Being Sold Off. I Did Stumble On An Article About A Billionaire Fellow (Clive Palmer) From Australia Who Has Talked About Re-Creating Titanic II. That Would Be Something Special. Imagine The Enormous Interest In People Wanting To Re-Live The Wonderful Past With A Cruise On The New Titanic II. The Article Is From 2012 & Mr. Palmer Is Said To Be Joining Up With A Chinese Shipyard. He Even Plans On Using The Original Titanic Blueprint, With The Most Modern Up To Date Safety Standards. (Decorating With That Time Period Would Add To The Attraction) They Spoke Of The Ship Being Ready Sometime In 2016, So I Wonder If Maybe Things Fell Through? I Will Keep Searching To See If His Plans Are Still In The Works? On Another Note, Mom Is Turning 81 This Fall & I Was Thinking About Taking Her For A Cruise Next Winter 2019 (Maybe Cunard, Or Norwegian) It's Been Fun Visiting About The SS Norway & Hearing Your Good Stories. If You Don't Mind, Maybe I Will Check Back In With You In A Few Months To Say Hello & Let You Know If I Found A Good Cruise For Mom & I. Thanks For The Good Visits. I Enjoy Them. Please Send Me A Note Anytime.

    Nice ship. I never sailed aboard her as SS Norway but I did when she was SS France. I was (very) young then and I hated getting into a tuxedo just to eat dinner (First class was black tie).

    They certainly don't make them like this anymore. What a beautiful ship. Im so happy i had the privilege to be on it. Cruise ships now are ugly looking. Obviously they aren't ugly when you are on them but as far as a visual from a distance.

    I'm surprised the French government did not buy this ship. It was France's Liner of State, and deserved to be turned into a hotel, like the Rotterdam & Queen Mary.
