    Hi Rohan!
    Great video :) I’m also a year 12 student and I have just recently decided that I wanted to do medicine - maybe apply to oxbridge too! I have a few question; did you do a lot of volunteering? And what do you think is the most important super curricular you need to do for your application to medicine?
    Thanks 😊

    • @RohanYesudian
      @RohanYesudian  Před 2 lety +3

      Hi Miles - thanks for watching! I did do about a year of volunteering at a local carehome (about once a week for a couple of hours chatting to residents / helping run some activities).
      There's no such thing as a most important supercurricular. The main things are to show your interest for the subject and going beyond your A-level courses. I suggest maybe doing an EPQ or writing some essays or reading books to show your interest. You can find out more info in my applying to medicine document in the description to this video.
      Hope this helps!

    • @RohanYesudian
      @RohanYesudian  Před 3 lety +1

      Doing an EPQ is definitely valuable, particularly if you are applying to an institution which is research heavy. I would recommend completing the EPQ at the start of the year 12 summer holiday (not sure which series that would correspond to sorry)

    • @RohanYesudian

      @@saanvirai7091 yes you get the EPQ grade along with the other a levels. However as long as you do an EPQ you can write about it in your personal statement and declare it on the UCAS application, so it shouldn't matter when you get the grade

Im currently in year 11s and just about to finish my gcses (last one tomorrow) but I haven't done any supercurricular activities for medicine so I'm really worried I'll be at a disadvantage because of this. So many people I know have started work experience or volunteering at the start of Year 11, but I missed out on these opportunities and currently cannot find any more opportunities in my area since all spaces are full. Am I too late in terms of supercurriculars? Im really worried because Oxford and Cambridge is really competitive, and I assume they value 2 years of work experience much more than just 1 year.

    If not Cambridge, what other medicine universities should I apply for?

    • @RohanYesudian
      @RohanYesudian  Před 3 lety +3

      Hi Ang, congrats on your GCSEs! Also sorry to hear about your situation hope you and your family are doing okay xx. Unfortunately the typical offer for Cambridge medicine is A*A*A, so I don't think applying with lower predicted grades is advisable. Have you talked to the school and asked if you can do some extra work to prove you are capable of an extra A*? If you really want to apply to Cam, when you fill in your SAQ form you can write about your situation in the extenuating circumstances bit.
      In terms of other medical schools, it's really a preference thing! If you were looking for other medical schools with a similar research pedigree as Cambridge maybe look into Imperial college London (I think their offers are AAA)? I applied there and got an offer too. But definitely that's something for further research
      Hope this helps

      @@RohanYesudian thank you so much for the advice! What about Oxford? I’m aware they have a more rigorous admission test method and therefore have lower entry requirements of A*AA, but I know for a fact, as you said in the video, they interview fewer students with a 20%ish likelihood for success, especially if I’ve only just got the grade requirements. I don’t want to give up, and I know how to work hard; do you think it’s worth it though? Please be honest!
      Also, I’m aware of Imperial, especially since it’s in the top 10 medical schools in the world, I just -out of arrogance I guess - want to be able to wear an Oxbridge hoodie some day! That’s been an objective of mine since year 10. But does university name really matter for medicine? Any advice would be useful!

    • @RohanYesudian
      @RohanYesudian  Před 3 lety +3

      @@angwithab6186 Hi Ang - you highlighted on a good point that Oxford are really strict in their pre interview screening progress. Unless you get an exceptional BMAT score e.g. an average of 6+ in sections 1 and 2, you do run the risk of being rejected before interview if you don't have really high predictions behind you.
      For medicine is really does not matter where you go!! Because its such a standardised and quality controled course you learn pretty much the same thing everywhere - but just in different ways. Personally I like learning from lectures and learning detail to understand concepts - hence that's why I went for mainly traditional courses.

    For international students which one would you recommend out of the two- Oxford or Cambridge? I got 95 percent in my last school papers. I am a chef, theatre artist, founder of a non-profit and rank 1000 (international) on the international science olympiad. I have attended several science competitions on the national level, and I have also some work experience in the field- I have shadowed a few doctors, all from different fields. I know my BMAT score is a big factor, along with my personal statement, but could you please help me choose from the given information? I am very confused. Thanks.

    • @RohanYesudian
      @RohanYesudian  Před 3 lety +3

      Hi Bhvik thanks for the question. There are no right or wrong answers regarding whether oxford or cambridge is better for international students - both are extremely competitive, particularly for international students! Personally I am biased towards cambridge of course! But on a more serious note there are more seats in Cambridge so perhaps your chances might be higher here, but not much higher to be honest. The most important consideration is to think where would you rather spend the next 5-6 years of your life! If you are worried about stats make sure to make use of freedom of information requests online! Here is an example of a rather informative one which i found for international admissions stats at cambridge: drive.google.com/file/d/1Jq2BUQzAiCRF9f-lA-DvfwdL8v4OKGeK/view?usp=sharing

      If it is not better than an average applicant (literally everyone), is there anything else I can do to improve my portfolio?
      Ps. I have also done some certified courses from reputed universities like Stanford, Michigan and Johns Hopkins.

Do research to find out more - there are so many more options than people like friends and family will tell you. Don't be afraid to be bold and daring and try something different. Work hard and God will do the rest buddy. Take care!
