Good thinking. I'm going to change mine tomorrow. I have approx. 320 miles on the odometer. I'll do another at 600. Picked up the Valvoline 10W40 regular motorcycle oil from Wally World for 4 bucks a quart. Can't beat it.
It's the same color as yours too haha , the orange looks amazing , and too me a lot better than the red. Was gunna get the black one but I felt it to be too plain haha
Oiling the gasket basically just keeps it from deforming during tightening and possibly causing leakage. I've seen some cheap filters actually leave the gasket in place on the engine when you remove them.
when i did my first oil change i didnt have the oil filter wrench thing and i had already my oil drainged and my fz is my only ride i couldnt get the damn oil filter off and had no way to go buy the thing lol ended up sticking a screwdriver throught it :)
Hahahaha no joke.. I did that exact same thing and I had the damn filter plier thing but when I turned it it either slipped or ripped a hole in the filter so I said fuck it drove a long screw driver through it and finally it budged hahaha wish I made a video of that :(
I would find the toque specs on the drain plug. I over tighten my R1 years ago and after several oil changes i needed to replace the oil pan. $$$$$ now i use the toque specs on my bike and i have had no problems.The plug is steel and the pan is aluminum.
Google K&J Magnets...they sell extremely Strong Neo Magnet Disks which slap on to oil filters, and will definitely hold any metal flakes floating around. They fit better on filters that don't have the lug in front like the K&N's
If I do it'll likely be this summer but I'll keep that in mind man! If you need a quick fix you can check fz-09 forums or I believe you (with the right tools) can just undo the top of the radiator and lean that forward enough to reach the plugs
Great video, but I have one suggestion. Sweep up the work area, so that you don't get any dirt in the engine. "A clean work space in a happy work space".
Don't forget to replace the washer on the drain plug ! It's a must , it's a crush washer , it crushes and makes a great seal for the plug. It's only like a buck something. I replace every service I do on my fz 09. And the oil filter, does using anything besides the Yamaha filter void the warranty ?
I oonly replace when I feel I need to, never had a leak or any problems except on my car. Not sure about the yamaha warranty on oil and oil filter I do love the orange too just wish it had a few more orange accents!
Hey man may I ask how tall you are and what is your opinion on how tall someone has to be to ride the fz 09 comfortably. I'm 5'7 and i'm thinking a I'm a little too short to ride one.
This was still what I consider break in oil,i believe this oil change was the 2nd that I did and the mileage on the oil was only 300ish it was in the bike from 300ish miles to 600ish. I change oil often regardless its not too expensive and its easy
I thought you changed the oil when the bike is cold so it's all in the pan? Hot bike has oil inside the motor so you are not getting all of the break in oil out? Wondering why it has to be hot/warmed up. Thanks
so, oil is obviously noticeably thinner when warm and having it thinner helps get more of it out as well as if you have any small debris in your oil you don't want it resting on the bottom of your pan, you want it circulating in your oil. think of it like if you poured sugar into a glass of water and tried pouring it out immediately you'd have a bunch of sugar in the bottom right? try doing the same but stirring in the sugar and pouring it out, you will get significantly better results. now all of this is just information I've gotten off the internet so I am not an expert but what I've read makes sense to me and hopefully I made it make sense to you as well! thanks for watching.

How many mile intervals do you change your oil? What weight? Fully synthetic?
I did about 3000 mile intervals and used fully synthetic ester based oil by Maxima

I think the original oil is supposed to be left in for 600 miles. It's a special kind of oil that helps the engine "break in".
How do you like the Maxima oil?
