Ported Vs Sealed - Focal 33kx 2 Cubic Ft

- So the great Ported vs Sealed Debate - just wanted to have a little input on the matter here with a real simple test of 2 boxes both with 2 cubic ft internal volume same subs/amp/power/car etc
and a sub that Focal recommends for only sealed enclosures
Now just to add the reason I tuned the ported box at 30hz was to make a flatter response over my desired range (25hz-50hz) if I was going for maximum spl it would have been tuned much closer to the 48Hz the cabin peaks at but that would be a very peaky box with no low end control
what i've ended up with now tho is a very musical enclosure

As always, great video my friend!
Excelent video, very informative. One question please: what is the soft on your phone and where do you get it? Thanks in advance.
Hi mate after watching you video now I want to try ported I drive a Nissan Patrol, got one 10inch atm, but does it give you port noise? Before watching this vid I was thinking of getting 3x8inch subs
Any similarity in this test with the Utopia BE 33WX?
Great video, really informative thanks
Hey buddy , great video! I love in Aus too, i have this sake subwoofer in my car , i want to put it in a ported box bit cant find any, do you know where i could find a box i can put my focal straight into ? Thanks bro
Way more informative video mate! Kudos to you!
Yeh but hang on a minute the correct sealed volume for that sub is smaller than the ported version so it has no control or compression and isn't behaving correctly so of course the ported version will sound better unless that ported box isn't the correct or recommended size we need some clarification
I agree
Hey man have you done any installs on the Holden Adventra? It has a factory subwoof and was wondering what to do for easy upgrade? Guessing it has a factory amp aswell?
yeah if its anything like a Vx you can use the factory amp still as it runs just off high low inputs from the deck, just need to work out the trigger wire
From the video, it looked like the ends of the ports were going to be very close to the rear doors. Do you think this had any effect on your results?
they sit about 5" (12cm) from the back which wont muffle the ports at all so it shouldn't effect it
thanks for the great video, if i may ask, with the coils wired in series to 4 ohm, how many watts would you be comfortable putting through one of these subs?
baesex hey mate, As long as you have a good quality amp then they will handle a little more than rated power of 400wrms so 600wrms would probably be about the most
instaBlaster...
The wave bouncing back will only happen with the front of the cone not the back. The motor inside the box the back wave is spread out creating that cushion.
Another great vid! Still wanna here the earthquake 12 & PR LOL What box program is worth using now?
I still use winISD and also the12volt.com
I like that triangle addition. Pre-fab sealed boxes are so cheap they are hard to pass up. Of course they invariably won't be the right size. The triangle provides helpful way to reduce the size of the box to get the desired Q.
buddy 3 DB is double the power, not 6. That means 5 x more power extra gain. Great video !!!
How do you actually calculate the tuning frequency of a box? Thanks.
yeah check out the12volt.com port calculator
1 vs 2 aero port for one 12 inch 700w rms ; which one is better ? (Pioneer TS-D12D2)
id go the 2 for sure
What about the time delay associated with ported vs sealed ?
To compensate you could use a bigger sealed enclosure ?
A bigger sealed will lower the fB, and the dB... horrible idea. To compensate the delay, you turn up the volume😂 You wont be able to tell once its loud enough.
well 2 cubic ft is already a bit bigger than focals recommended box, end of the day the ported box works as a 4th order the 48hz cabin frequency is 1 half and the ported box tuned at 30hz is the other
@@AustraliasBiggestBassChannel nice lol
Seth H larger sealed subwoofer is actually better. I've tested it myself. If you want low bass though.
I just got a 38kx spl. I am trying to design a box for it. I am a bit worried about the xmax as I am trying to build a vented box as well. I would like to pick your brain. As even Focal didn't have the T/S parameters for this sub. I emailed and messaged them.
Regards,
Can you email me your recommended design then for a ported enclosure for one of these KX33’s? Builders I’ve talked to don’t want to deviate from the sealed design. Anything like a band pass, or 4th order / quarter wave style design perhaps? Feel free to message me to discuss further, thanks!
They don't perform well in a ported box. The 33kx is extremely boomy in the ported box. You can't get them remotely flat. You can see with his sine sweep readings the difference between around 40hz and 60hz. And since you usual crossover subs at around 80hz this volume difference sounds silly. Boomy boxes what you find is the volumes are all over the place between songs, sometimes the same song, one song with really low freq you'll blow the doors off, the next song with higher freq it will be very quiet. In the video he is saying he is getting the flatter curve with the ported box, but this is only because he is measuring from 50hz down which is around the ported boxes peak, but subs need to play down from around 80hz as stated before.
i want to see a test with a ported and sealed box in at the same time. i love sealed but also like ported and want to know if i can get it to work good with both lol. thanks for sharing
4th order box
Sealed has better bass defination
nice video, thanks
I swear by sealed enclosures... i have 3 rockford p3 10s in a sealed chambered enclosure 1 cubic ft per sub. Should i do the angles in the back of my box chambers?? Does it really make a big difference???
it helps with sound waves bouncing directly back and cancelling out with each other but it would only make a small difference in my opinion
@@AustraliasBiggestBassChannel thank you for your answer. A follow up question is that I really am kind of aiming for the best sound quality I can get. Would doing this help at all?
Doing this would help with output mostly as any cancellation is loss, shouldn't affect SQ really in either way pos/neg just give you more output
@@AustraliasBiggestBassChannel well my goal in the end is kind of an extreme SQL setup. And more output is definitely something I'm interested in. So I think I may just go ahead and give it a go. Thank you so much for your help! I cant wait to see this build as it progresses!
If you put acoustic damping wool in it.
It will "increase" the volume of the box.
And wenn you build a new box you can make it smaller.
Oy mate excellent good video
Just got given this sub, used to run 2 15" competition subs, and my amp put down 3500 at .5 ohm which was perfect for the 15's, and puts out 800 RMS at 4 ohm which is perfect for this sub. Looking forward to hearing it, but just bought a brand new car so want to design the perfect custom boot enclosure before I put this in
What was the sealed tuning frequency?
Manufacturer calls for 1.4 cubes, 1.7 cubes max for sealed so maybe that's why it's not performing well because the enclosure at 2 cubes is too large.
how many liters the closed case
both are the same 2 cubic ft (56.5L)

If you’re lucky to get a true 3db at twice the power.
Polyfil just the back wall inside the box to stop wave cancelation and to slow down the wave to make it sound deeper/longer wave. Good video mate👍👍
Focal lists their subs as sealed only. I spoke to an engineer there in Cali and they will not warranty a blown sub in a box out of spec because boxes blow subs the same as an under powered amp does. I use the E25 power subs and at $900 it not worth a few temporary spl to blow them to shit and not be warranted.
every 3DB is double your power. 12DB extra is 4 x more power. nice outcome.
Lol wtf. No idea what your talking about
@@trudeaumustgo1920 actually, you sir, are very confused. The first guy is dead right. Double wattage gains 3db.
Ported boxes are loud but they Distort Alot Early than Sealed
false not sure where or how you got that info.
Sealed is wierd though sometimes it doesnt distort
Or depends on tuning 🤔
Had a ported sub and that NEVER happened!!!
foCAL
Focal should just stick to mids & highs
Actually they make excellent subs. Check out soundman's build in his F150. He first had a JL w7 then went to the focal sub and liked the focal better than the W7! Thats a damn fine sub.
Very scrupulous
I just got a second focal sub 33vx. There is so little information about these subs. I appreciate your video. Wondering if you are on Facebook or if there is a way to contact you. I would like to pick your brain, if possible.
